SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Students said they've seen a steady decline at San Diego State University tailgates over the past three years.At their Homecoming tailgate Saturday some students were nervous to celebrate after learning a Freshman was gravely injured after a night of drinking."We definitely want to respect the family and respect the kid, and everyone who has been impacted by this because obviously this is something super severe," SDSU Senior Emma Marchant said.The parking lot was dotted with tailgaters, consisting mostly of alumni, a vast difference compared to the throngs of partiers in September 2018's home opener."Freshman year this whole area would just be covered with people and now it's kinda just us," Marchant said."Mainly undergraduates haven't been here," UCSD Alumna Teigan MacDonald said. Her sister is involved in Greek life at SDSU.A moratorium was announced October of 2018, requiring any group of 25 or more students to register and agree to a list of rules.SDSU President Adela de la Torre suspended Interfraternity Council (IFC) activities citing the "severity of the incident" following the alleged fraternity event Wednesday night, a statement from the school read."Given the severity of this incident, and as the safety and wellbeing of students is a primary concern of the university, SDSU President Adela de la Torre has suspended the Interfraternity Council (IFC) and all chapter organizations under the council," an SDSU media relations officer said Friday."I think a lot of people are shocked, I understand why the university is doing it because we have people's kids' health at stake," MacDonald said.The University working to balance social life with safety."I think education and awareness is a huge step. i don't think punishing people and just suspending will do it because they've suspended again and again and this situation keeps happening again and again," MacDonald said."I hope there are measures taken that are intended to protect students but still allow them to be out here you know which is kind of a hard line to walk," Marchant said. 2095

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Grinch is back yet again to steal Christmas from San Diego.The Old Globe Theatre's production of "Dr. Suess's How the Grinch Stole Christmas!" returns to San Diego for its run from Nov. 4 to Dec. 24. Back for its 20th year, the holiday classic brings Whoville to the Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage in Balboa Park. The Grinch, played by Edward Watts, will embark on a quest to stop Christmas from gracing the town of Whoville, featuring the songs "This Time of Year," "Santa for a Day," and "Fah Who Doraze."RELATED: Holiday family fun around San Diego this seasonBut the action isn't just on the stage.On Sunday, Nov. 12, the show will kick off with the 12th annual tree lighting outside the Globe with a special performance by the cast for free. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Tens of thousands of jobs are on the line as Congress struggles to save the airline industry, but a new bill announced Friday is giving some aviation workers hope.For Dante Harris, it’s more than a job.“It's a career that I would never want to exchange for any other,” said Harris.In his 21 years as a flight attendant with United Airlines, he’s traveled to every corner of the world. Now, he’s among the tens of thousands laid off after Congress failed to pass a stimulus bill this weekHarris is the president of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA Council 12 union stationed at LAX, which also serves San Diego and Seattle members.He says about 2,500 United Airlines workers on the west coast lost their income and health care.It comes as an incredibly hard blow for the first responders of the sky who already faced countless challenges due to COVID-19.“We provide service to make sure that doctors and nurses get to where they need to go, to make sure that Americans are safe,” said Harris.On Friday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said if a bipartisan agreement is not reached, she’ll push for a standalone bill to extend payroll protections for airline workers for another six months.Harris is calling on Washington to extend that crucial funding so airline workers can get their wings back.“We need that bridge to get us to the point where we can bounce back,” said Harris. “And we can fly America to all corners of the earth again.” 1468

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Drug Enforcement Agency launched a summer project drilling down on factors leading to violent crime across the nation. It is called Project Safeguard.Special Agent in Charge of the San Diego district, John Callery, said, "over 75% of those [violent] crimes are driven to get money to buy drugs."He said drugs and crime go hand in hand. "When a person devolves into a drug addict unfortunately they become very desperate right? And a desperate person will do desperate things to get money and buy drugs."Callery said his team geared up to knock out 15 cases with violent criminals. The arrests happened from August to October."We took a three month, for lack of a better word, a surge. Let’s get violent actors off the street. Let’s arrest them, DEA, and let’s charge them federally." Callery said they arrested 34 criminals.He added they have a lot of evidence to go through as well, "we’ve seized 71 firearms and... seized 160 kilograms of heroin and 160 kilograms of fentanyl."He hopes the arrests lead to hundreds more and reveal kingpins in the Mexican Drug Cartels."We’re a border town and we have a huge responsibility here to try and stop drugs from entering the United States because 75% of all drugs enter right here in our area and go to the rest of the United States." Callery said he is incredibly proud of his teamHe said five agents were infected with the novel coronavirus since March and have recovered. He said they haven't stopped working through the pandemic.Callery said his next big task is National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on October 24th. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Students from around San Diego are using a modern medium to learn and inspire.The Cesar Chavez Service Clubs, which has chapters at 22 local schools, has launched the "Chavistas Podcast."Once a month, they interview a local leader, learning that person's story. They hope it can inspire other kids to reach for the stars."We feel that, as a community of Chavistas, that we can get a good message of community out there," say Ariana Gallegos, the club supervisor.Gallegos has a background in radio broadcasting and uses that to help the kids craft their interviews."It's a beautiful experience that I get to bring the students to a setting that sometimes is hard to be at," says Galleos. "But it allows them to see that if I can do it, you can do it."Students in the club say it's been a fun experience. They hope other kids will listen and learn."When it turnes out good, it's really nice, just feeling like you accomplished something good," says Wilson Elementary 7th Grader Mecklin Montgomery.
