The Southeastern Conference decided Thursday that they are only playing SEC teams this season amid the coronavirus pandemic. The SEC will play 10-conference games. They also decided to push their kickoff date to September 26 and the Championship Game will be played on December 19."This new plan for a football schedule is consistent with the educational goals of our universities to allow for the safe and orderly return to campus of their student populations and to provide a healthy learning environment during these unique circumstances presented by the COVID-19 virus," SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey said in a news release. "This new schedule supports the safety measures that are being taken by each of our institutions to ensure the health of our campus communities."A revised football schedule, which will first need to be approved by SEC athletic directors will be sent out at a later date, conference officials said. The SEC joins the Pac-12 and Big Ten conferences to be playing conference-only games.According to The Associated Press, the ACC will play an 11-game schedule with one non-conference game. 1120

The United States has more than double the rate of premature overdose deaths of at least 12 other countries, according to a new?study. The research, published Monday in the Annals of Internal Medicine, says that there were an estimated 63,632 drug overdose deaths in 2016 in the US."The U.S. has the highest death rate due to drug overdoses for both men and women (35 deaths in 100,000 men and 20 deaths in 100,000 women) in 2015, more than double those of any other country in our study," Yingxi Chen, one of the researchers and a postdoctoral fellow at the National Institutes of Health's National Cancer Institute, wrote in an email.Mexico had the lowest rates: 1 death per 100,000 men and 0.2 deaths per 100,000 women. The researchers also found that the United States had the second-highest increase in drug overdose deaths: 4.3% per year in men and 5.3% per year in women, Chen said. Only Estonia had a higher increase.Norway was found to have the biggest decrease in drug overdose mortality for the whole population. Decreases were also found among men and women in Mexico, Spanish men and Danish women.Researchers "looked at the trends and patterns of drug overdose deaths among people age 20 to 64 years in 13 countries of the Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development?between 2001-2015," Chen said. These countries were Australia, Chile, Denmark, England, Wales (the data for these two countries was combined), Estonia, Finland, Germany, Mexico, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain and the United States."I think it reinforces what we know about the United States but also points out some of the contrast in terms of the ways other countries have dealt with similar issues," said Caleb Banta-Green, principal research scientist at the University of Washington Alcohol and Drug Abuse Institute, who was not involved in the research.Banta-Green and the researchers both point out that opioids play a part in the high levels of drug overdose deaths in the US.The study describes US opioid deaths as "triple epidemic waves," starting with prescription opioid deaths in the late 1990s, heroin deaths beginning in 2010 and finally deaths due to synthetic opioids, which include fentanyl.Other countries have found solutions to high rates of opioid-related deaths, according to Banta-Green, who cited France, which was not included in the research."When France got rid of the restrictions on prescribers using the medication buprenorphine, their national mortality, opiate overdose mortality rate dropped 79%," he said.Buprenorphine is a drug approved by the US Food and Drug Administration that can be used, alongside behavioral therapies and counseling, to help with the treatment of opioid addiction. It is the "first medication to treat opioid dependency that is permitted to be prescribed or dispensed in physician offices, significantly increasing treatment access," according to the US Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.Banta-Green believes that creating better access to substance abuse disorder treatments, along with a better national understanding that these are treatable medical conditions, would help reduce the number of overdose-related deaths in the US. This includes giving more people access to medications that could help treat and manage opiate addiction."That's really fundamentally what I think we need to take away from these data finding is that there are solutions, other countries have them, and we are not doing the dramatic things that we need to be doing," he said. 3565

The way doctors treat asthma in both children and adults just got a major update.Speaking to the Journal of the American Medical Association, respiratory experts said the changes in guidelines focus on six key areas, including improving asthma diagnosis, management, and treatment. It’s the first published update in 13 years.“So, one of the goals of our update was to address the issue of who can use intermittent inhaled corticosteroids and when used, are they as effective as daily use,” said Michelle M. Cloutier, MD with UConn Health. One of the biggest changes is that many patients may not need to use an inhaler every day anymore.“Especially those families of young children who don’t necessarily buy into using daily medication when their children are having intermittent symptoms,” said Stephanie Lovinsky-Desir, MD, MS with Columbia University Irving Medical Center. The new recommendations for inhaler use vary by age and severity of asthma, so it’s important to talk to your doctor about the new guidelines.Asthma affects nearly 5% of adults and 10% of children.During the pandemic, because of the higher death rate of asthma patients from COVID-19, more people have been seeking treatment for the condition. The average annual cost of asthma per person is more than ,200. But research has also shown among other things, regular use of medication and flu vaccines can reduce the chances of someone with asthma being hospitalized, driving up those costs. 1472

The Trump administration is taking steps to give telehealth a broader role under Medicare, with an executive order that serves as a call for Congress to make doctor visits via personal technology a permanent fixture of the program. The order President Donald Trump signed Monday applies to one segment of Medicare recipients — people living in rural communities. But administration officials say it’s intended as a signal to Congress that Trump is ready to sign more significant legislation that would permanently open up telehealth as an option for all people with Medicare. Trump says his administration is “taking action to make sure telehealth is here to stay.”"When the invisible enemy struck our shores, we took immediate action to eliminate regulatory barriers to telehealth, making it easier for patients to consult with doctors from safety and convenience and really, they have great safety and great convenience right from their homes," Trump said. While the CDC said in June it was working on expanding access to telehealth, it did list some drawbacks to the service:Situations in which in-person visits are more appropriate due to urgency, underlying health conditions, or inability to perform an adequate physical examThe need to address sensitive topics, especially if there is patient discomfort or concern for privacyLimited access to technological devices (e.g., smartphone, tablet, computer) needed for a telehealth visit or connectivity issuesLevel of comfort with technology for HCP and patientsCultural acceptance of conducting virtual visits in lieu of in-person visits by HCP and patientsInterstate licensure challenges and other regulatory issues that may vary by state 1701
