SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Around 400,000 people in San Diego County face hunger, including one in six children. To fight and end hunger in our county, programs like Feeding San Diego bridge the gap for those facing food insecurity and getting access to donations. "We were faced with so many decisions of its either food or paying the bills," said Gabriela Sanchez. Sanchez, a mom of four with a baby on the way, struggled to put food on the table after her husband got sick. "It was hard to even explain to the kids," Sanchez said. Now, she is getting the help she needs through Feeding San Diego's program in Oceanside. The program sets up at San Luis Rey Elementary school, one of their distribution sites, so the community can get access to free healthy food. "It's been a big difference between eating fruit from the cans to eating the fresh fruit and vegetables," Sanchez said. Donate to Month of a Million MealsAccording to Matthew Jennings, Director of Communications at Oceanside Unified School District, access to fresh, healthy food, will help students succeed in the classroom. "When a child shows up for school in the morning, and their belly isn't hungry and they're not worried about what they are going to each for lunch, students and families are able to focus on their education and on their time together," Jennings said. Gabriela Sanchez says the food has made a positive impact in her kids' lives. "With Ivan and Jacob, we've seen so much improvement. They have actually been able to exceed their reading levels, their math levels. They have been able to concentrate more," Sanchez said. The impact Feeding San Diego's program has had on this family is life-changing. "They go, mom, you're always crying, and I'm like it's just a blessing," Sanchez said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — County officials will challenge a ruling that allows local strip clubs to operate while several other businesses are closed or limited under California's new stay-at-home order.San Diego County's Board of Supervisors voted 3-2 in a closed session on Tuesday, with Supervisors Kristen Gaspar and Jim Desmond voting no, to appeal any "adverse ruling" to a hearing over whether to allow strip clubs to remain open.The businesses sued to county and state in October over COVID-19 restrictions that forced them to close indoor operations. A judge issued a preliminary injunction on Nov. 6 that protects the businesses from any enforcement, though the businesses must comply with rules surrounding a 10 p.m. curfew and close early.RELATED: State says San Diego County playgrounds can remain open during stay-at-home orderSupervisor Nathan Fletcher said on Wednesday that the board will have a hearing before a judge. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Before Vice President Mike Pence made his way to Coronado, he spent the morning at the Hilton Bayfront Hotel.The Vice President and Second lady stayed there during their San Diego Visit. A few protestors inflated the now well-known "Baby Trump" outside of the hotel; It's possible the Vice President got a look at the giant balloon. "We're hoping that the Vice President sees this and sees that there is resistance here in San Diego," says protestor Will Johnson. The giant balloon was an attention grabber for many who saw it on Park Boulevard. "I knew he was coming to town, but I didn't know he was staying here," says Kate Permenter. Permenter is in town for a convention and staying at the Hilton Bayfront Hotel, saying, "So last night people kind of started freaking out."Outside of the hotel, security checked every car making its way into the garage. Hotel guests say there are dozens of police officers and secret service agents inside of the hotel. "At every entrance, there are cops just kind of staring at you."Dozens of officers escorted the motorcade as the Vice President left downtown this morning. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Border agents arrested 15 people over Presidents’ Day weekend during a smuggling event in Mission Bay.U.S. Border Patrol agents caught the smuggling incident in action on Saturday at about 2 p.m. at a Ski Beach launch ramp. As agents got closer, they say they noticed a large group of people quickly exiting the boat and heading for three vehicles.Agents stopped the individuals from getting away and questioned all 15 people involved in the incident.Agents say six people in the group were suspected of human smuggling and arrested. Five of them are U.S. citizens, including four men ranging from 20 to 30 years old and one 25-year-old woman, according to border officials.The nine other people arrested were male Mexican nationals ranging from 27 to 41 years old who admitted to being illegally present.U.S. Border Patrol seized the boat and three vehicles at the scene. 899

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Border officials say the man shot and killed on Friday night by a Border Patrol agent behind the Las Americas Premium Outlets mall was trying to enter the U.S. illegally.A statement from Aaron Heitke, Chief Patrol Agent for the U.S. Border Patrol, San Diego Sector reads:“On Friday, October 23, 2020, at approximately 5:45 p.m., a United States Border Patrol agent responded to apprehend a man illegally entering the United States immediately west of the port of entry in San Ysidro, California. During the arrest, an altercation ensued and the agent discharged his firearm, wounding the man, who was later identified as an adult Mexican national. Nearby agents and law enforcement personnel responded immediately and initiated lifesaving efforts until emergency medical services arrived. At approximately 6:25 p.m. the man was pronounced deceased at the scene. The investigation is currently being led by the San Diego Police Department. Customs and Border Protection will continue to fully cooperate with the ongoing investigation. The specifics of this incident have also been shared with FBI, DHS OIG and CBP Office of Professional Responsibility. Additional updates will be provided by the San Diego Police Department, inquiries should be directed to them.”SDPD added Saturday that the 30-year-old man was shot once in the torso by the agent after he fought the agent, who sustained minor injuries.Social justice leaders with the American Friends Service Committee and Alliance San Diego have sent a letter to SDPD calling in part for an independent investigation to be handled only by police, not border officials or unions. Part of the letter reads, “Any involvement or coordination with these agencies, and specifically with CIIT has the potential to corrupt the investigation and could be considered an obstruction of justice.”Pedro Rios with the American Friends Service Committee said that he and others are considering holding a demonstration on Sunday. “I think for us it's important to ensure that people are treated with dignity regardless of who they are and we shouldn't jump to conclusions about the person who is now a victim and is now deceased,” Rios told ABC 10News on Saturday.
