PROVO, Utah — Unproven conspiracy theories about COVID-19 have caused a group of people to try and breach a local hospital, officials say.The group, fueled by the unsubstantiated theory that hospitals are misrepresenting capacity levels, has attempted to break into the Utah Valley Hospital in Provo.The hospital recently reported during a Provo City Council meeting "that a few individuals without a medical need have attempted to gain physical access to the facility with the intent try to confirm fake conspiracy theories — such as hospitals are not busy and that reports of the COVID-19 surge are false."It was unclear if anyone was arrested or cited for the disturbances."Hospital staff have also fielded some telephone calls regarding similar false conspiracy theories. Although these situations are few and isolated, stopping attempts to gain inappropriate access and responding to fake conspiracy theories diverts attention from providing lifesaving care provided at the hospitals," said Intermountain Healthcare, which operates Utah Valley Hospital, in a statement. "COVID-19 is real and the hospital is seeing large increases in patients with the virus. Staff are stretched and are working many extra hours to meet community needs. We ask the public to join with us, mask up, wash hands, social distance, and stay home when sick so we can care overcome the challenges of this pandemic in our communities."On Thursday, Utah saw its highest number of new COVID-19 cases in a single day — nearly 4,000 and nine new deaths.Hospital capacity is at 87%, meaning many medical centers are running out of places and staff to take care of those who contract the deadly virus.The surge in cases in Utah comes as the virus spreads uncontrollably around the country. President Donald Trump will hold two rallies in the western swing state of Arizona on Monday while Sen. Kamala Harris will stump for her running mate, Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden in the all-important battleground state of Florida.Polls indicate that Trump has significant ground to make up in the final two weeks in order to win re-election — a steep but not impossible task, considering he did just that in winning the 2016 election.Trump spent Sunday evening in the Las Vegas area after a rally in Nevada — a crucial swing state where recent polls show him trailing Biden by as many as 11 points or as few as 2 points. A state infamous for tight races, recent polls show Biden with a slight lead of just a few points.At a drive-in rally in Orlando, supporters honked their car horns as Harris approached the stage. She urged those in attendance to hit the polls as soon as possible, as early in-person voting opened in the state on Monday.Harris bashed Trump on his administration's response to the COVID-19, citing reports that he privately told journalist Bob Woodward in February that he knew the virus was deadly despite his public efforts to "downplay" the crisis. She also told rally-goers that key issues like healthcare and police reform would be on the ballot next month. President Donald Trump's former campaign chairman Paul Manafort has been found guilty on eight counts of financial crimes, a major victory for special counsel Robert Mueller.But jurors were unable to reach a verdict on 10 charges, and Judge T.S. Ellis declared a mistrial on those counts.Manafort was found guilty of five tax fraud charges, one charge of hiding foreign bank accounts and two counts of bank fraud.
