SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Voting in San Diego County Tuesday has been a relatively smooth experience, even with higher-than-normal turnout, a San Diego County spokesman said.Michael Workman, county communications director, said workers at the Registrar of Voters have been very busy. While official numbers were not available Tuesday afternoon, the county has received 430,000 mail-in ballots out of 1.2 million sent out, according to the Registrar of Voters.As of Monday, early voter turnout was "pretty robust," Workman said.RELATED: Election error: Voters left off roster at polling placeWorkman said polling places will probably be especially busy between 4:30 p.m. and 8 p.m., when they close.Between the various races and state propositions, "this is a very long ballot," Workman said. "It might take (a person) 12 minutes to vote."He advised people to fill out their sample ballot first before heading to the polls. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Girls Empowerment Camp put on by the San Diego Fire Department started Saturday despite some controversy a few months ago. The camp teaches girls what it takes to be a firefighter. The girls learn how to pull hoses, climb ladders, and climb out of windows just like firefighters do on the job. In February, attorney Al Rava sent a letter to the city attorney on behalf of his client, Rich Allison. The letter claimed that the camp was unwelcoming to boys solely based on their sex. The girls are thankful the camp is back on. Many have dreams of being firefighters or paramedics. The camp is hosting another weekend for teens in May. There are still spots available. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A 91-year-old woman died and a younger woman was injured in a crash in Clairemont Friday. The crash happened about 11:30 a.m. in the 6000 block of Balboa Avenue, near Mt. Alifan Drive, authorities said.The older woman was driving south on Mt. Alifan in a gray Toyota Camry. Police said the Camry and a car driven by a 32-year-old woman collided in the intersection of Balboa Ave.Wreckage was strewn across the Auto Zone parking lot at 6085 Balboa Ave.The 91-year-old woman, who has not been identified, died at the scene. The younger woman suffered minor scrapes and bruises, police said.The cause of the collision is unknown. Police said it was possible a car may have run a red light, leading to the crash.Balboa Avenue is closed in both directions from the 6000 block (Mt. Alifan Dr.) to 6600 block (Mt. Albertine Ave.) near Lindbergh/Schweitzer Elementary School. Police believe the road will reopen about 3 p.m. 973
SAN DIEGO (CNS) - UC San Diego announced Monday a million gift from the John and Mary Tu Foundation, designated to help increase the number of people tested for COVID-19, as well as develop new ways to track and treat the virus.The award supports the clinical research activities of UCSD translational research virologist Dr. Davey Smith, who is "advancing new diagnostics, therapies and ways to monitor the spread of the virus," according to a university statement."What we are trying to do is save lives," John Tu said of the gift to create the John and Mary Tu Foundation COVID-19 Response Fund. "It's very simple: with this research, Dr. Smith is working on behalf of everybody, to save us, to save the world."At the onset of the pandemic, Smith and his team began to investigate methods that would increase the efficiency of testing as well as understand the disease process -- how the virus mutates and spreads within a population. Through sequencing the virus, he is able to track the disease as it spreads into vulnerable populations, which informs the best means for contact tracing.Smith is also leading clinical trials to test new drugs for treatment of COVID-19 for those who have moderately severe cases."At this critical time during the COVID-19 pandemic, the generosity of the John and Mary Tu Foundation has an immediate positive impact on our efforts," said UCSD Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla. "Their support allows experts like Davey Smith to quickly mobilize to mitigate the spread of the virus and develop treatments for those affected."Smith said the gift was important, as he and his team had limited resources, which would have frozen their progress."The foundation saw that time was of the essence in this pandemic and that science was going to get us out of it," he said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A former employee of the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System is suing the agency for retaliation after he said he stood up for a co-worker.Ivan Augustino moved to the United States from Sudan and still volunteers with projects for his native country. He started working for MTS in 2015.“It was pretty good,” Augustino said.Augustino worked as a Senior Applications Developer.“I am the main guy that deals with the complicated back end computer codes,” Augustino said.In 2017, he said he made a move that changed everything. It started with a co-worker.“One morning, she walked into my office pretty much in tears,” Augustino said.He said that a co-worker confided to him the Chief Information Officer discriminated against her when she asked about a promotion. The lawsuit filed against MTS claims the CIO told Augustino’s co-worker she was “not qualified for the job because of her age, her marriage and family planning status, and her relationship to an active duty military service member.”“The other question she also asked was, how old are you? You seem like you are at an age where you would be having kids,” Augustino said. It was a shocking conversation.“You know, that is wrong,” Augustino said.After his co-worker told him what happened, he first asked advice from another co-worker who then took it to human resources. Augustino said his co-worker did not want to bring the complaint to HR.“The last thing that anyone within the IT department wants is to take an issue to HR because once you report it to HR, there is going to be retaliation,” Augustino said.And that’s what happened, according to the former MTS employee. Initially, he was concerned how MTS investigated the complaint.“I was expecting someone to at least come and talk to me, but no one spoke to me,” Augustino said.He said retaliation began by the CIO and his direct supervisor.“The way they treated me just changed,” Augustino said.He claimed management suggested they would give him recommendations if he found another job. On another occasion, Augustino said they “mocked [his] English as a second language” in an email. On top of that, he said 98 hours of paid time off promised to him for working overtime on a big project was revoked, along with a promised promotion.“Coming from where I come from, I just felt like I did not even know what to do,” Augustino said.Feeling “degraded” and “intimidated”, he submitted a letter of resignation. However, he said he gave management an option.“If you can address this issue and the executive team and bring what I view as retaliation to a stop, I will pull my resignation,” Augustino said. Instead, he said he was fired and walked out of the building by security. His termination came a little over a month after he voiced his concerns about his female co-worker.A spokesperson for MTS told Team 10: “There is absolutely no validity to any of Mr. Augustino’s claims.”When asked if he would defend his co-worker again, Augustino said “absolutely.”Attorneys Zachary Schumacher and Daniel Goularte represent Augustino."This is absolutely a David versus Goliath situation," Schumacher said.Schumacher said fear is why people don't speak up."I like to compare it to battered wives syndrome, where you essentially have this person or in this case this entity who has this major power and balance who is doing all sorts of awful things and figuratively at least, battering its employees and yet they don't leave. They feel this sense of loyalty," Schumacher said.
