SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Surgeons at UC San Diego are using new technology that offers more options for patients who have complex thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms. UC San Diego Health System is the first on the West Coast to use Dynamic Morphology Correction, a type of 3D imaging. It allows surgeons to compare scans taken before the procedure to real-time pictures during the surgery.Dr. Mahmoud Malas, Chief of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at UC San Diego, says this type of technology uses minimal iodine contrast which lessens the chance of kidney problems for 25 percent of patients dealing with aneurysms.The data from this technology helps surgeons across the country.Dr. Malas adds, " They create prediction models that helps future surgeons perform procedures more accurately." 795
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The man accused of opening fire into a Hillcrest business has been found incompetent to stand trial. Stefano Markell Parker, 29, was facing attempted murder charges in San Diego in connection with the shooting at Golden Dragon Asian Bistro in February of 2019. Witnesses in the area that night described a man they say stood outside the restaurant armed with a rifle and opened fire. No one was shot. Witnesses say the gunman then changed clothes, providing a description. Police arrested Parker in the area later in the night. A spokesperson at the Jefferson County Jail in Alabama previously confirmed to 10News that Parker was in custody in recent years. In 2016, he was arrested in Alabama for possession of marijuana and drug trafficking charges. In 2017, he faced charges of distributing methamphetamine and possession of marijuana. Court records also show that Parker faced capital murder charges when he was a teenager in connection with a shooting from a vehicle. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The EPA has announced several short-term projects to stop cross-border sewage spills in the Tijuana River Valley.For years, the area has been dealing with sewage spills and contaminated waters in the area, forcing the closure of local beaches.Some of the projects announced Wednesday include replacing nearly a mile of old leaking pike, improvement to the pumping systems to divert sewage flow away from the Tijuana River Valley, and replacing collectors that had repeatedly collapsed in the past.One of the grants will divert 10-million gallons of wastewater flow a day.Mayors from costal cities like Imperial Beach and Coronado and Border Patrol officials joined the EPA during their announcement, sharing how the contaminated waters have impacted their communities.As a result of these short-term fixes, Imperial Beach mayor Serge Dedina says the beaches are now open.EPA official say the money for these projects come from 2020 funding. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – The Friar Faithful won’t be able to attend games in Texas to cheer on their San Diego Padres, but fans can support the squad in this week’s National League Division Series games at Petco Park while in their cars.The Padres’ drive-in watch events will take place at Petco Park’s Tailgate Lot at 1301 K Street.The first game of the best-of-five series against the NL West rival Los Angeles Dodgers is set for Tuesday, Oct. 6. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., and the series will be played at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.Games will be shown on three separate large LED video screens, and fans who attend are encouraged to decorate their vehicles and don brown and gold in support of the team.Part of the drive-in experience includes dining options for four, a reusable bag with four rally towels, a car flag, and four hats.The team is reminding those who attend that health and safety measures will be in place, such as guests remaining in their vehicles unless they are visiting a retailer onsite or using a restroom.Face masks are required for all fans; the team says all staff members at the event will be wearing masks and conducting routine cleaning.There will be 20 feet of space between vehicles to promote more social distancing.Jaclyn Lash, the Padres’ Vice President of Special Events, said, “We’re still in a pandemic, we did everything we did that people stayed in their car or wore a mask.
