CLEVELAND, Ohio – An 11-year-old boy was shot and killed while attending a birthday party in Cleveland on Saturday. Authorities say the shooting occurred at a residence in the city’s Hough neighborhood around 9:30 p.m. EMS transported the child, later identified as Tyshaun Taylor, to Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The resident of the apartment told police that she had allowed her 16-year-old son to host a birthday party. She said she had left to go to a nearby store when the shooting happened. On Thursday, the United States Air Force Academy announced that President Trump nominated Lt. General Richard M. Clark to become the Academy's first Black superintendent. According to the U.S. Air Force Academy, if the Senate confirms Lt. Gen. Clark's nomination, he will become the second Black general to head up a service academy. He will be in charge of the Academy's undergraduate academic program, cadet military, and athletic training and character development.“I am extremely humbled and honored by the nomination to serve as the Superintendent of the Air Force Academy,” said Lt. Gen. Clark. “I’m also excited for the opportunity to build on the tremendous work of Lt. Gen. [Jay] Silveria and to give back to the institution that has given me so much. Go Falcons!”Clark has a history of leadership with the Air Force Academy, previously working as the Commandment of Cadets and at other levels of Air Force Command. He has pilot expertise as well, ranging from bomber to air-refueling. He currently leads the nuclear expertise for the Air Force at the Pentagon.“I have no doubt that Lt. Gen. New research shows suicide rates among teens are going up and are now at their highest levels since 2000. Now, pop star Lady Gaga is now taking steps to try and save lives in schools across the country. At Freedom High School in northern Virginia, students Katie Ramboyong and Jake Beyer spent part of their school year keeping an eye on other students, looking for any signs one of their classmates might be in trouble. “You never know when there's another kid struggling that we could help out,” says Beyer. About 550 10th-grade students at the high school spent a week in training to learn how to recognize the signs and symptoms of mental health issues among their classmates. “Withdrawing from school, not talking to friends, just not being yourself as much,” Ramboyong says of the signs. Students then alert teachers or staff about any red flags. Ramboyong ended up using her training to help a student who told her on social media that he wanted to kill himself. “I found out that he had tried to kill himself already and he was not in a good place,” she recalls. “The next day, I went in and I talked to both of our teachers that we had, and I told her that he was not okay and that it was serious and he needed help right away.” At Freedom High School, the training helped identify nine students who ended up going through suicide screenings because of behavior concerns. Kenneth Christopher, the school’s director of school counseling, says they received the names of the students because of the program.“One hundred percent it's working, and it is helping and our students are making a difference because they're speaking up, they're telling a trusted adult, they're linking up the student with someone here at the school that could possibly give them outside resources to help them and possibly save some lives,” Christopher says.The program is part of an initiative with Lady Gaga's Born This Way Foundation. “My dream is that this happens in every school,” the singer says of the initiative. EVANSTON, Ill. – If you drive too fast, you could miss it. But a chance turn into one alley just north of Chicago will transport you into a drive-thru art gallery. “I wanted to take this place this alley which is just ugly or lackluster and make it into something special,” explained Teresa Parod. The Evanston, Illinois-based painter and artist is the person behind several vibrant garage door murals. From floral motifs to interplanetary themes, her goal she says is to uplift people through her painting. “I want all my public art to be positive because no one who walks down this alley… most didn't ask me to paint this,” she said. “So, I don't want them to come and see some something that is very negative or makes them feel unhappy.” The canvases range from one-and-a-half to two car garage doors. She only charges for material. The medium: house paint. “What I really like is when people come who are not in the neighborhood and they're just riding their bikes or walking dog and they're like well what is this? And it's something special,” said Parod. The artist started with her own door, concerned with how her neighbors might respond. “This is my own garage. And I thought it would be fun to put the front of my house on my garage,” she said. But many have embraced transforming the back alley into a gallery of vibrant, public works of art. Neighbor Judy Slagle saw the work and just had to have her garage door painted as well. Hers is a collection of brightly colored sunflowers. “When I came home especially in the winter like it is now, I wanted to come home and have something that would make me smile and other people I hope too,” said Slagle For an enhanced experience, Parod’s husband Bill, a sound artist and software developer, is creating an augmented reality app. Virtual birds can be seen on the screen interacting with the paintings. He is designing customized vignettes for each door. “So that we could walk to them and you could hear something in 3D and walk around and the birds and so on could fly around,” he explained. The doors are now in high demand. “Everybody started asking me to do them and I have a waiting list,” said Parod. “So, I hope to do the whole alley and I hope to do more alleys.” And while Parod may see the world as her canvas, this time it’s right up her alley. 2346
