Jerry Brown ordered new DNA tests that a condemned inmate says could clear him in a 35-year-old quadruple murder case, which has drawn national attention.On Monday, Brown ordered new testing on four pieces of evidence that Kevin Cooper and his attorneys say will show he was framed for the 1983 Chino Hills hatchet and knife killings of four people. Kamala Harris, state Treasurer John Chiang and reality television star Kim Kardashian are among people who called for Brown to order new DNA tests. Cooper had his execution stayed in 2004, which drew national attention at the time.The purpose of the new testing, he wrote, is to determine whether another suspect's DNA or the DNA of any other identifiable suspect is on the items. If the tests reveal no new DNA or DNA that cannot be traced to a person, "this matter should be closed," Brown wrote.Two previous tests showed Cooper, 60, was the killer, argued San Bernardino County District Attorney Mike Ramos. He previously said the tests proved Cooper had been in the home of the Ryens, smoked cigarettes in their stolen station wagon, and that Cooper's blood and the blood of at least one victim was on a T-shirt found by the side of a road leading away from the murders.Cooper's attorney, Norman Hile, said his client's blood was planted on the T-shirt, and that more sensitive DNA testing would show who wore it. (AP) — A Southern California police department says three middle school students have been arrested after attempting to free another student from custody.The Riverside Press-Enterprise reported Saturday that a 15-year-old Tahquitz High student arrived at Rancho Viejo Middle School Friday and argued with a school employee.Hemet police says the high school girl was arrested on suspicion of threatening a public employee after a campus police officer attempted to speak with her.Authorities say three other minors attempted to stop the officer from arresting the girl by blocking the patrol car door and trying to punch the officer.Authorities say the officer called for backup and the girl, two 13-year-old boys and a 14-year-old boy were arrested.School officials say the students should expect to face disciplinary action from the district. 869

Robots are the latest in technology working to reduce the risk of COVID-19 at airports.A robot, called the "Breezy One," just started working at the Albuquerque International Sunport. It operates autonomously and can decontaminate a 100,000 square foot space in about 90 minutes.“We're working closely with chemical manufacturers who have created very effective and very safe chemicals that have been rigorously tested,” said Kimberly Corbitt from Build with Robots.“It's providing even a protective layer throughout the day, which is pretty exciting when you think about the robot leaving behind a protective layer that really helps people stay safe in these environments,” said Melonee Wise with Fetch Robotics.The robot's creators say the disinfectant it uses is registered by the Environmental Protection Agency, and has been tested and approved by multiple government agencies.The City of Albuquerque’s Director of Aviation, Nyika Allen, hopes the robots eases some concerns about flying.“Here with robots, we actually have the whole facility mapped out and we can see what it’s done, what it hasn't done, how long it took the robot and so we're actually able to guarantee the customer and the passenger that these spaces that they're touching in the airport are getting disinfected on a nightly basis,” said Allen.Allen says the custodians have been part of the process of bringing on the robot, and that it's not replacing any of them. Instead, it's making their job safer and letting them focus on other tasks.The robot's creators are in talks now to place them inside a large factory in the U.S. that's currently disinfecting there by hand.The Pittsburgh International Airport is another airport that recently started using a robot to clean. It's also autonomous but utilizes UV lights retrofitted on the airport's existing floor scrubbers.And in Grand Rapids, an autonomous robot that sprays FDA approved disinfectant is joining the airport there.Something else we're seeing more of now with the mask requirements for air travelers are vending machines for personal protective equipment in the airport. The machines were recently added in the Denver and Las Vegas airports.The future of travel is also expected to be more touchless. (AP) — California wildlife officials say residents cannot keep an invasive beagle-sized rodent as a pet.The Sacramento Bee reports that the California Fish and Game Commission are taking preventive action to avoid the South American nutria from spreading.The commission says they will discuss adding nutria to a legal list of prohibited pets in December.Officials say California could see about 250,000 rodents in five years.Scientists say they captured hundreds in multiple counties already as part of a million plan to eradicate the rodent.Experts say their burrowing is damaging to waterways and flood protection infrastructure.Nutrias have also been reported in Oregon, Louisiana and Maryland. 727
