SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Hillcrest will soon be home to San Diego’s first rainbow crosswalk to represent the community’s role in LGBTQ+ history. The rainbow crosswalk, similar to those in cities like San Francisco and Seattle, will be located at Normal Street and University Avenue. “The installation of a rainbow crosswalk has been a long-standing goal of the San Diego LGBTQ+ community. Hillcrest deserves a visual representation of the LGBTQ+ movement and its goals of visibility, acceptance and inclusion,” said Councilmember Chris Ward’s office. A celebratory event called “Catwalk on the Crosswalk” will take place Jan. 11 at 1 p.m. The San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus and Women’s Chorus will perform and cupcakes will be provided by Babycakes. She has advanced causes of equality, justice, and empowerment on both sides of the border, serving on boards and committees in the U.S. aimed at advancing equlity and helping Mexico's legal system transition to oral advocacy.Ruth Goldschmiedova Sax: Sax is a survivor of three Nazi concentration camps and dedicated her life to speaking about her experiences and reminding everyone that hate is never the answer. Her life was chronicled in a biography by her daughter, Sandra Scheller, and won the Multicultural Motion Pictures Award for best documentary. Scheller will accept the award posthumously for her mother.Colleen O'Harra: O'Harra is the founding Executive Director of the Oceanside Women's Resource Center and has served the city for eight years as an Oceanside City Council members and two years as Deputy Mayor.Bridgit Wilson: Wilson is a veteran who has advocated for LGBT active duty and military veterans, working to repeal the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy and helping craft the Obama Administration's policy allowing transgender individuals to serve openly.Dorothy Smith: Smith served on the San Diego Unified School District Board of Education and was the first African American woman elected to public office in the county. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- For the first time in nearly 100 years, an integrated company of male and female recruits at MCRD San Diego are about to begin their journey into becoming Marines. These future Marines will be led by graduates from MCRD's first ever integrated Drill Instructor Course. Now the mission of the course is to screen, train, and further develp leadership and command presence of selected Marines, in order to successfully perform duties of a drill instructor."We are taking them from the leadership skills, that they had in the fleet, and further refining them here," says Major Lynn Stow, Director of the MCRD San Diego Drill Instructor Course. "The drill instructor's goal is to successfully transfer recruits into United States Marines."Fifty-seven Marines are scheduled to graduate from the grueling 57 day course, and for the very first time, the graduating class will include 3 females."Getting the opportunity to come here was almost like divine intervention, everything just kind of fell into place," says student Sargent Stephanie Fahl. "To come here and make it this far, I'm really proud of myself."These future drill instructors at MCRD are looking forward to changing the lives of young 17 and 18-year-old recruits. "The change I'd like to instill in the recruits is to obviously maintain that discipline that's a staple of recruit training,"says student Sargent Stephanie Jordi. "I'd also like to inspire them and teach them how to become leaders even from that lowest level." Student Sargent Ikea Kaufman feels being a drill instructor is about teaching recruits how to be men and women."There is more to life than social media and all that. There is actually responsibility."And while Drill Instructor Course is very rigorous, the payback is immense. "You have contributed to the mission of making Marines. You have been able to take these recruits from day one and transform them into Marines. They are going to look up to you as their role model." 1991

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Families with children in the county's largest school district will have to wait until next year to have their kids return to the classroom.Today San Diego Unified School District leaders and School Board members announced that the goal for phase 2 of their reopening plan is January.Elementary school students would return on January 4th, after winter break. Middle and high school kids would return on January 25th.School officials say virus spread in the community could jeopardize that plan."We actually anticipate that San Diego County will move into the purple tier sometime in the next few weeks. We know that once the county moves into the purple tier we can continue with phase 1, not phase 2," said Richard Barrera, school board vice-president.Under phase 2, pre-k to fifth grade would return to campus four days a week. They'd be split up into an am or pm session. Fridays would be online. Middle and high school students would be on campus two days a week, also split into two groups, with Fridays on line. Families can still opt for remote learning."I think it's a start, I think it's a plan that should've been implemented on day one, it's just surprising that eight weeks into the school year we're just coming up with this plan," said parent Gina Smith.Smith is a family therapist and mom of an eight-year-old boy. She started a group with other parents pushing for schools to reopen. They've been holding rallies outside the school district offices. She believes the district hasn't done enough to get kids back to class."Absolutely poorly, all the way around, they've had seven months to prepare up until now, and we've had no communication up until the point that we started these rallies," said Smith.The district has been working with UCSD scientists on the reopening plan. School leaders said they've spent more than million on PPE, sanitation, social distancing measures, ventilation, and other precautions.Berrara said it's the district's goal to have a robust testing plan that would regularly test everyone who comes on campus."I don't think there is a single district in this county, or frankly in this country, that can make the claim right now that they know that if somebody comes onto one of their campuses with the virus that they are able to prevent the spread, because we don't have the testing," said Berrera.Smith said she isn't overly concerned about the virus."Our concerns are, should be on par with any normal flu season, and we should take the necessary precautions, but I think we are going to see more cases, obviously, as we have more tests," said Smith.The district implemented phase 1 of its reopening on October 13th. Since that time, there have been more than 4,000 appointments for in-person learning across 106 schools. According to Superintendent Cindy Marten, there have been zero documented outbreaks of COVID-19 and zero documented cases of transmission on campus.San Diego Unified is California's second-largest school district. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Homicide detectives are investigating after a man died in Hillcrest early Sunday morning. According to Lieutenant Anthony Dupree, a passerby was walking near Albert Street and Upas Street around 5:30 a.m. when he saw a man with trauma to his body and called police. The passerby performed life-saving efforts on the man before paramedics arrived, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene, Dupree said. According to police, the man was between the ages of 25 and 30, but his identity is unknown at this time. Dupree said detectives are going door-to-door in the area to find out if anyone heard anything. 635
