SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - Developers in San Diego are offering a new concept for families looking for homes: Multi-Generational Housing.The homes include a separate suite within a single structure. The suite has a bedroom, living area, bathroom and a small kitchen.Developers say the idea designed with let elderly relatives, adult children who move back home or relatives with special needs in mind."You’re still with the family, but you have that privacy to step away and still be independent," says Bill Ostrem, the San Diego Division President for Lennar Homes. "At the same time, if you want to engage with the family, the family wants to engage with you it’s right there."Lennar says they started developing these kinds of homes in 2011 in Arizona. They saw a need as more extended families began living together.The suites help with that.Currently, Lennar is building their "NextGen" homes in the Sterling Heights community near 4-S Ranch. Ostrem says it's become their most popular model.About 1/3 of all the homes they've sold in Sterling Heights have the extra suite. They have other developments with NextGen homes in 13 states."I think it just makes sense," says Austin Dias, a Co-Partner with The Phair Company. They're about to start construction on La Mesa Summit Estates just north of the 94 freeway near Lemon Grove. The overwhelming response they got was from families looking for these kinds of homes."We see this a lot in other countries," Dias says. "Now people in America are starting to embrace it."The homes are pricey. Models in Lennar's Sterling Heights development run between .7 and million. San Diego (KGTV)- While millions are bracing for Hurricane Dorian, San Diegans are preparing to take part in relief efforts. Volunteers and first responders are making their way to the impacted areas. A handful of American Red Cross volunteers left Monday. Twelve others are already getting their assignments in Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas. “This is a major response for us,” says Sean Mahoney, Regional CEO for the American Red Cross. “We sent 99 semi-trucks full of sheltering equipment, cots, blankets, and everything needed for folks when they’re put out of their homes.”Mahoney also left Monday heading to the Carolinas. In total, 16 volunteers from the San Diego area are assigned to help with relief efforts, but more are ready to go if needed. “We have 22-hundred volunteers in the San Diego and Imperial counties region. They’re all checking their status, just making sure that they have the qualifications needed.”Volunteers would assist with mass care, feeding, and shelter. The San Diego Urban Search and Rescue team spent the morning loading up supplies. After a morning conference call with FEMA, David Gerboth says the team could be called to the east coast. “They are looking at mobilizing additional search and rescue teams now from the west coast,” says Gerboth. “So we’re configuring our cache to be able to mobilize at a moments notice.”The team is prepared to spend at least a week on the east coast, assisting victims with search and rescue, collapsed structures, and more. The San Diego Urban Search and Rescue team has already sent five members to assist with logistics. Those helping with storm relief would typically drive to the impacted areas. But this time around, if they are called out, first responders will fly to get there by the time the storm makes landfall. “We know when we go and help our friends on the east coast, they’re also ready to come in case we need it on the west coast.” 1936

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)  - A Marine was found dead Monday afternoon at the armory of Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, according to military officials.The Marine had suffered a gunshot wound. No foul play is suspected, according to the U.S. Marine Corps.Military officials did not announce whether the incident was a suicide or accidental firing.The Marine’s identity has not been released. He or she was assigned to the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing.The MCAS Miramar Provost Marshal Office and MCAS Miramar Fire Department responded to the scene and are investigating the death. 580

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - California Gov. Gavin Newsom said indoor operations must close in the state, so some businesses like gyms and restaurants are moving outside. For the beauty industry, there’s a divide. While Newsom and San Diego County officials said businesses can move outside, the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology won’t allow it.Bahar Radman is a stylist at Del Beauty Box and said she already started cutting hair in her salon’s parking lot. She said it works because there is more space to spread out, there is better airflow, she already has the cosmetology training on best hygiene practices, and she’s also taking coronavirus safety precautions, like keeping a mask on the whole time. She said of her first three outdoor clients, all were happy with the setup and already booked return appointments.This goes against the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology rules, though. In a statement, a spokesperson from the Department of Consumer Affairs said, “The Board of Barbering and Cosmetology understands the effect shutdowns have on businesses and is sensitive to that. As it stands at this moment, under current laws and regulations, the services cannot be performed outside. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Visitors and locals are expected to flock to San Diego beaches this Fourth of July weekend.While some beaches will close in California for the holiday weekend, San Diego County officials will keep local beaches open.San Diego County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said no COVID-19 community outbreaks had been linked to beaches, and without the data, it would not make sense to close them off.According to Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county’s public health officer, leaders of San Diego’s coastal communities said they believe they can manage the enforcement of social distancing and facial coverings this weekend.Longtime Solana Beach residents Richard and Lori Brenckman are frustrated by the idea of crowds flocking to the beaches during a pandemic.“The general public has shown that it’s not trustworthy to social distance,” said Lori Brenckman. “They want to gather, and most people have proven that they won’t follow the rules.”Beachgoers are required to maintain social distancing and wear a facial covering when they come within six feet of someone not from the same household. Mixing with other groups is prohibited.Lifeguards across the county are preparing for the busy weekend.“It is the big holiday of the summer, so we expect giant crowds,” said Lifeguard Lt. Rick Romero with San Diego Fire-Rescue. “This a tourist destination; everyone wants to come to San Diego.
