SAN DIEGO, Calif. — For months, health professionals have urged the public to help stop the spread of COVID-19, while promoting face coverings, social distancing, and hand washing.“We’ve known for a long time that this virus is an enveloped virus and has an outer lipid layer, and we know that it’s sensitive to agents that can disrupt this fatty outer shell. That’s why we ask patients and people to wash their hands with soap," said Dr. Kami Hoss, founder and CEO of The Super Dentists in San Diego. Throughout the pandemic, Dr. Hoss has also asked patients to swish some mouthwash before they sit down for care.“That’s just one more layer of protection we’ve added," said Dr. Hoss. Now, researchers at Cardiff University in the United Kingdom are learning some mouthwashes can kill COVID-19 within 30 seconds, at least in a lab setting. The study found mouthwashes containing .07 percent of cetylpyridinium chloride showed promising signs of combating the virus, as well as those with ethyl lauroyl arginate. But while these mouthwashes killed the virus in the lab, the virus is continuously replicating in humans. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- There's a new requirement that large California counties have to meet before they can advance on the state's color-coded COVID-19 reopening system.State health officials say the "health equity metric" will help reduce infection rates among vulnerable populations.Sunday, San Diego County health officials opened another drive up testing site in Chula Vista. Local leaders say they've been targeting disadvantaged communities with education, outreach, and testing since the start of the pandemic."About 34% of our county population is Latino, but about 66% of the cases, we saw that early on, and that's why we took the action of developing the South Bay Saturation Strategy for testing. We have sites in every community in the South Bay," said Nick Macchione, director of the Health and Human Services Agency for San Diego County.Counties with more than 106,000 residents will be divided into quartiles based on income, education, and other factors gathered in census tracts.The goal is to bring the infection rates in the most disadvantaged neighborhoods in line with the county's overall rate."Now they need to make sure that not only does their test positivity for the whole county, their adjusted case rate, but also their test positivity in the lowest quartile in the Healthy Places Index for the county all need to meet the criteria for the least restrictive tier," said Dr. Mark Ghaly, California's health secretary.Ghaly said counties will need to show that they're directing money and resources to help the communities hardest hit."It's not just the test positivity, that's the piece that helps counties move forward or slows them down in moving through the tier system, but we are working with counties on a broader strategy to focus on equity," said Ghaly.Ghaly said failing to meet the metric cannot push a county back into a more restrictive tier, but can slow it down from moving ahead.Nancy Maldonado is the President and CEO of the Chicano Federation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Several trailers were set up at El Toyon Park in National City and will become a study site for a COVID-19 vaccine clinical trial, ran by UC San Diego.Drugmaker Johnson & Johnson is looking to enroll participants worldwide for phase three of its Janssen trial, including here in San Diego.UCSD will recruit the majority of the participants.The trial was scheduled to get underway on October 7th, but UCSD researchers now say they're looking at Friday as a start date."We hope to enroll about 2,000 people in San Diego, the study will be enrolling 60,000 people internationally," said Dr. Susan Little, a UCSD professor of medicine and principal investigator for the trial. "Eight Department of Defense trailers form the basis of our permanent vaccine site, vaccine clinic, in National City."Little said this will be a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study to determine the vaccine's safety and efficacy."Does it reduce the frequency of COVID infection overall or the severity of COVID infection among study participants?" she said.Little said there is already a lot of data available from the past."This is the same vaccine vector that has been used for many other infectious diseases like HIV, Zika, Ebola," she said.Although the trial is open to all San Diego County residents who qualify, she said the focus would be on recruiting residents from the South Bay, which is why the clinic was set up in National City, instead of UCSD's La Jolla or Hillcrest locations."Communities of color have been harder hit in the sense they have higher rates of hospitalization, and many of them have higher rates of death, our hope was by placing the vaccine trial in a community that has higher rates of infection we could reach a more highly impacted community," she explained. "Those are populations that we hope will have a greater potential benefit from this vaccine."After concerns were raised over another trial that was later put on hold, UCSD worked with the Chicano Federation to ensure South Bay residents get the information they need to make an informed decision if they want to participate."We are putting safety as paramount for these studies, no study is going forward unless we are confident about the safety of the vaccine," said Little.The Janssen trial will be the third for UCSD to join.
