BEIJING, Dec. 26 -- Competition between airlines and rail operators will further hot up on Saturday thanks to the launch of China's longest high-speed train link between Wuhan and Guangzhou.     The line stretches more than 1,000 km and will slash the travel time from Wuhan, Hubei province, to Guangzhou in Guangdong from 10 hours to just three.     Tickets for the service - which also stops at Changsha, capital of Hunan - went on sale at new stations in the three cities last weekend, with prices ranging from 780 yuan (0) for first class to 490 yuan for second class, said a joint document released by the National Development and Reform Commission and the Ministry of Railways. A bullet train runs on the Wuhan-Guangzhou high-speed railway on Thursday    The link, on which trains will reach a top speed of 350 km/h, is expected to pose a real threat to airlines running flights linking the cities.     "High-speed rail has three advantages over air travel: it is more convenient, more punctual and has a better safety record. This could help erode the airlines' market shares," said Si Xianmin, chairman of China Southern Airlines, the largest domestic airline by fleet size.     From today's launch, 38 out of China Southern Airlines' 160-plus domestic flights will compete with high-speed train links, he said.     A similar service opened on April 1 between Wuhan and Hefei, Anhui province, had already grabbed half of the passengers traveling from Wuhan to Shanghai, said Si.     The Shijiazhuang to Taiyuan link, also opened on April 1, caused sales for China Eastern Airlines' Beijing to Taiyuan flight to slump 36 percent the following day, while private Spring Airlines reduced its Shanghai to Zhengzhou flights due to competition from the Shanghai bullet trains, Beijing News reported.     To deal with this threat, China Southern Airlines last week unveiled several counter measures, including cutting ticket prices from Wuhan to Guangzhou by almost half for advanced purchases.     The company also signed a deal with airports in Wuhan and Changsha to give priority to flights to Guangzhou to ensure punctuality.     If railway chiefs over-cut the number of low-cost tickets on slower trains, as they did when the country's first high-speed link opened between Beijing and Tianjin last year, the airlines could win more passengers with cheap offers, said Zhao Jian, professor with Beijing Jiaotong University.     "But whichever side wins, passengers will be the ultimate winner," he said.     Wu Wenhua, a researcher with the National Development and Reform Commission's comprehensive transport institute, said developing high-speed rail networks is in line with the demand for high-efficiency, low-emissions transport.     China plans to have high-speed rail services running between 70 percent of key cities by 2020, which would cover more than 80 percent of the airline network.     About 16,000 km of railway for 350-km/h trains will be built on the mainland in the next 10 years, according to a blueprint by the Ministry of Railways. BEIJING, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- China's economy is expected to grow by 9 percent next year on robust property and automobile sectors, chairman of CCXI, a China-based credit rating agency said Tuesday.     Mao Zhenhua, the chairman, also forecast the country's GDP growth this year would expand by as much as 8.8 percent. He added China's economic growth for the next ten years would slightly fall from the peak in 2010 to around 7 percent around 2020, still a relatively fast pace compared to other countries.     But he cautioned the heavy reliance on exports and investment as major drivers to the Chinese economy has not changed currently, and that the structure for economic growth has not been optimized.     Mao made the remarks while addressing a conference that also shared outlooks for China's property market, and its automobile industry for the next year.     "China's property market is to remain steady in the next 6 or 12 months due to strong underlying housing demand in the country," said Kaven Tsang, assistant vice president of Moody's Investors Service Hong Kong Limited.     He attributed strong housing demand to rapid economic growth, expanding urbanization and rising living standards in the country.     Reduced inventory after strong sales over the past few quarters and improved liquidity of developers are also preventing a substantial decline in the property sector, he said.     According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), housing sales in China reached 2.75 trillion yuan (403 billion U.S. dollars) in value for the first three quarters this year, a year-on-year increase of 73 percent.     Amid weak exports, the Chinese government will also continue to promote domestic consumption and see fixed-asset investment increase, with the property sector remaining "central" to the Chinese economy, said Tsang.     NBS figures show investment in the real estate sector in China posted a 28.4 percent growth in October this year.     The CCXI also forecast China would continue to see robust growth in auto sales in 2010, driven by the steady development of national economy, rise in individual income and stronger demand from China's central and west regions.     Chang Haizhong, senior CCXI analyst, said "cars have great market potential in the central and west regions which will become a new growth point for auto industry."     For example, sales of heavy trucks are expected to grow considerably next year, boosted by the government's massive fixed-asset investment, fast development of logistics and expansion of expressway network.     "Bus and sightseeing coach sales will also rise next year, as the government is determined to step up development of public transit systems, and people show more willingness to travel," Chang said.     He also said auto joint ventures in the country would try to seek a bigger share of middle and low-end market while keeping the dominant position in high-end market next year, posing a threat to domestic self-owned automakers.     Chevrolet, an arm of Shanghai GM, introduced SAIL, a new car model last week. URUMQI, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- A railway became operational Sunday in west China's Xinjiang Autonomous Region, which is expected to boost the transportation from China to central Asia and Europe, said local railway authorities.     The railway, called Second Urumqi-Jinghe Line, runs 381.5 km and links the region's capital Urumqi and Jinghe county. It has a designed transportation capacity of 67.1 million tonnes, which is expected to grow up to 91.7 million tonnes in the future. With a designed speed of 120 km per hour, the railway cost 2.77 billion yuan, according to a statement from Xinjiang Railway Bureau.     Jinghe is linked to Horgos and Alataw Pass, ports on the China-Kazakhstan border, by two other railways. One starts from Jinghe and ends at Horgos. The other runs from Urumqi through Jinghe to Alataw Pass.     The launch of the new railway would greatly enhance China's transportation capacity to Kazakhstan and further into other countries in central Asia and Europe, the statement said.
