Now, during this presidential election, she’s pivoting and also helping others politically.“We wanted to make a place where patients, family members, health care providers could all access this information really easily,” she said.Wong is the founder of Patient Voting, a nonpartisan, volunteer-based group of medical professionals helping patients vote from hospitals.“It really came to mind during the last presidential election in 2016,” Wong said about starting Patient Voting. “A patient telling me that they would rather leave and risk their life to go vote. That’s why Wong says informing patients about their rights is critical to get their votes counted.“They are so focused on their condition when they come into the hospital that sometimes, ‘Oh my gosh, I didn’t realize that I’m going to have to figure out how to vote,’” Wong said of patients. “That doesn’t hit them until the next day and then they’re scrambling.“Patient Voting has volunteers nationwide. Their website gets up to 300 hits a day, a somewhat small number, though political science experts say it could have a big impact.“In 2000, it came down to 600 vote difference in Florida,” said Robert Preuhs, Ph.D., chair of the political science department at MSU Denver.He says the ability to allow people to exercise their right to vote and facilitate that under extreme conditions, like being in a hospital, is completely legal and it’s also crucial for some to have their voices heard.“It’s really hard of course to get out of a hospital bed and go down to a poll,” Preuhs said. “In order to allow people to vote, this is an organization, these laws are in place in order to facilitate that.”Wong says the money to fund Patient Voting comes from a grant from Brown Emergency Medicine, a price she says is well worth the investment during this political season.“I think this is something really important that we can offer them,” Wong said of helping patients vote. “I think they shouldn’t have to choose between their health or their right to vote.” 2286

(AP) — A 3-year-old gelding was fatally injured in the fifth race at Santa Anita on Saturday, becoming the 34th horse to die at the track since December.According to a statement from track owner The Stronach Group, jockey Ruben Fuentes pulled up Satchel Paige at the three-eighths pole of the 6 1/2-furlong sprint. Track veterinarian Dr. Dana Stead saw that the gelding had sustained an open fracture of his left front ankle and decided to euthanize him.Fuentes wasn't injured in the ,000 race featuring horses that had yet to win.Dr. Dionne Benson, chief vet for The Stronach Group, said the gelding will undergo a required necropsy at UC Davis. She said the accident and necropsy report will be reviewed "to learn what, if anything, could have been to prevent the accident."Benson said Santa Anita will work with the California Horse Racing Board to investigate the accident.Trained by Phil D'Amato, Satchel Paige was winless in six career starts, with one second and one third-place finish. As hundreds of homeless wait to return to the Alpha Project tent in downtown after it was flooded last week, San Diegans are stepping in to give them a little holiday cheer.ABC 10News reporter Natay Holmes was at SDCCU Stadium on Sunday morning where a local photographer, Abe Barron, and a group of kind-hearted volunteers, donated food and treats to those in need.Their mission is called "X-Mas on the Street." The group got together to make 800 tamales to hand out, along with some festive Christmas cookies. Barron and the volunteers will be at the stadium today until noon. Americans aren’t exercising like they used to.“I’ve definitely been walking a whole lot less since the coronavirus hit,” Nathan Martin said.With social distancing orders put into place, the pandemic has many people spending more time at home.“I was a little bit less active and more Netflix,” Hannah Hockensmith said.Now, a new study is showing this drop in physical activity is increasing health concerns across the globe.“COVID-19 is a worldwide phenomenon unlike anything else we’ve seen in generations,” said Dr. Geoff Tison, a cardiologist at the University of California, San Francisco.Tison recently finished a new study using smartphone apps to track the step counts from almost half a million people in countries worldwide.The data was collected from mid-January to early June and the findings show the world is walking a lot less.“Within the first month of the pandemic, declaration activity decreased by about 27%,” he said.Tison says this lack of physical activity could damage people’s health, especially in older adults.“With decreased activity, increased sitting on the couch, just not being as active is muscle mass can start to decrease as can bone density,” he said.In America, the study shows the biggest drop in step counts happened in New York City while Dallas had the smallest decrease.“The changes in activity seem to reflect adherence to social distancing at least to a degree,” Tison said.To increase exercise indoors, Tison says is all about thinking outside the box.“You can do similar exercises, work similar muscles with things around the house,” he said. “Use a gallon of milk instead of a dumbbell.”To exercise outdoors, however, Tison believes changes need to happen at the city and state levels.“Policy makers, governments need to be creative understanding that people are humans and want to be active and want do things,” he said. “But to enable them to do that safely.” 1913
