That was the trigger,” retired first grade teacher, Carol Mason said. “There have been so many more that it just breaks my heart.”The 88-year-old said she was inspired to partake in her first anti-gun demonstration Saturday, after being inspired by the nationwide student walk-out last week.She and more than 100 people held signs and walked along Villa De La Valle, chanting “Never Again!” Especially after the Parkland tragedy, protestors said they could not stand to see another child being killed by gun violence. The San Diego County Fair,” protester, Jill Cooper said. “And all of these wonderful shows like the concerts, and it does seem like a miss match because if we allow gun shows to continue, I think we are sending a chilling message to our children that guns are more important than they are.“Michael Schwartz, Executive Director of San Diego Gun Owners PAC disagreed.Because California has one of the strictest and perhaps most confusing gun laws in the nation, he said that shows like these help gun owners and their families learn proper gun etiquette and practices. He believed that will help avoid future tragedies. “People go learn to get training and get and try different types of firearms legally, that sort of thing,” Schwartz said. “So, if you want responsible firearms ownership, you want a gun show five times a year in Del Mar.”Meanwhile, Mason accepted the fact that she will not see eye to eye with those inside the gun show. But she hoped her first ever protest at age 88 just triggered a new perspective.“We’re not trying to take away their 2nd amendment right,” Mason said. “We’re not trying to remake the whole culture. But we’ll peck at it. Bit by bit by bit. Defense attorneys for the suspect in the Pittsburgh synagogue massacre entered a plea of not guilty Thursday to federal charges and requested a jury trial.Robert Bowers, 46, walked into court in wrist and ankle restraints Thursday, his second court appearance this week, after a federal grand jury indicted him on 44 federal charges in last weekend's slaying of 11 worshippers at the Tree of Life synagogue.During the arraignment, Bowers watched prosecutors and nodded periodically. He responded "yes" that he understood the penalties of the charges, and his public defender, Michael J. Novara, entered a plea of not guilty "as is typical," he said.Of the 44 charges, 32 counts are punishable by death, a grand jury filing released Wednesday said.The court hearing comes the same day that crowds of mourners will lay more victims to rest and as their memorials continue to grow.On Monday, Bowers had been brought to the courtroom in a wheelchair and only spoke to answer the judge's questions. DENVER — The City of Denver has dealt with at least 289 cases of public urination or defecation so far in 2018.“You’ll come outside in the morning and someone will have just used the restroom all over the wall,” Denver resident Jake Rose said.Rose, who lives in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of the city, says he sees the issue when he walks into his alley to get to his garage.“It’s pretty offensive. I’d rather not see it,” he said.KMGH contacted several residents in the Capitol Hill neighborhood through the Nextdoor app to get their thoughts.“This is a HUGE issue in the area,” one resident said. “This problem has increased dramatically.” Another added that there was “just poop everywhere.”Denver police keep track of how many citations they give out for certain municipal code violations. From January to November, that number came in at 289 for public urination or defecation. A police spokesperson added that usually officers give warnings, sometimes multiple, before issuing a citation.There were another 136 complaints through 311 for human waste in the public right-of-way.“Any waste in the public right of way is essentially a public health issue because that waste can go into our waterways, people can be exposed to it, and we don’t want that,”said Jeremy Garland of the Denver Department of Public Health and Environment.Garland says multiple city departments work together to try to address the issue. Police issue citations, DPHE deals with cleanup through 311 and the Department of Public Works can be called for larger cleanups.“We don’t want this happening in our streets.
