A fire broke out at Trump Tower on Saturday, leaving one man dead and six firefighters injured, the New York City Fire Department said.Police identified the man killed as Todd Brassner, 67, a resident of the building's 50th floor. The prank sent the school into a lockdown.The school said the incident has raised security concerns. One person involved, Eloy Lopes, 18, isn't a student at the school anymore."Our staff at GlenOak acted swiftly in addressing the immediate safety concerns as a result of the prank," a school representative school said in an email.Lopes was criminally charged with inducing panic with a reckless disregard for others, according to the sheriff. The sheriff's report said he was charged with criminal trespassing because he is not a current student at GlenOak. According to authorities, he held a door open for the dirt bike rider. The three students involved, a 17-year-old male and two 18-year-old males, were also arrested and charged with inducing panic with a reckless disregard for others for their involvement in the prank, according to authorities.The school has not addressed the status of the three current students, nor has it said whether or not security policies will change moving forward. 1515

A Jessup, Wisconsin mother said she feels almost back to normal after beating cancer with proton therapy. But she didn't learn about the diagnosis, until it was almost too late. "I feel horrible. I just don't even want to exist right now," Mary Alston said. That's what she told her doctor after her depression started to worsen. Her doctor changed her medication and even increased the dosage, but nothing helped. She decide to take her own life on Christmas eve. "I was just like nobody should have to put up with this then and that's when I decide I was going to take some pills," Alston said. She took a bunch of sleeping pills and drove to a Park & Ride. "Just sit down in my car, lean the seat back, listen to the music and just go to sleep," Alston said. That was her plan, but that's not what happened. "I heard a tap, tap, tap on the window and it was a police officer," Alston said. Her daughter knew something was up and had called police to find her. Alston said she tried to leave but the officer took her to the hospital. "The next thing I remember is waking up at the Washington MedStar," Alston said. She woke up the day after Christmas and found out she had brain cancer because a doctor did a CT scan. "All the people that I’ve talked to have told me that there was no protocol to run a CT or MRI on my head and for whatever reason, Dr. Shack at Howard County literally saved my life by doing what she did," Alston said. At the time, doctors told her it was stage one. She was in surgery the next day to remove the tumor. With its location, she said it all made sense: her depression and mood swings. A few weeks after the surgery, she found out her tumor had been upgraded to state two, meaning radiation. She knew right away that she wanted proton therapy, a very precise form of radiation. "When you deliver a proton beam, you can pick where the tumor is and it will deliver all of that dose and there will be no spread of the dose beyond the tumor," executive director of the Maryland Proton Treatment Center, Dr. Bill Regine, said. "Having a tool like protons, where you can put the dose in and not spread it to other parts of the brain, is extremely powerful."Regine says the center in Baltimore is the only one of its kind in the region. Open for just two years, he says it's the largest and fastest-growing center in the country. "The most exciting thing is that we can impact the lives of cancer patients in a way we couldn't before," Regine said. They have helped almost 1,000 patients Regine says research shows proton therapy increases the cure rate and decreases side effects. It can also be very helpful for pediatric patients. Some other centers have a challenge getting their therapy covered by insurance, but Regine says 85 percent of their patients have had success getting approval because their cost for the therapy is similar or the same as other radiation treatments. There are more than 100 clinical trials happening across the country right now, and he hopes that will provide enough positive research to get 100% insurance coverage. Alston's treatment lasted 6 weeks, and as of April 16, she was cancer-free. She feels almost back to normal and is very grateful. "I'm grateful that my daughter called police. I'm grateful that that doctor ran that scan and I'm grateful to be here today," Alston said. Given the second change, she has a new view of life. "A new spiritual awakening. I feel like God knocked loud and hard on my door and I’m obviously here for a purpose. I’m hoping that my story will help someone else that is going through anything similar," Alston said.She's also used her journey to help others. After realizing that hats to cover hair loss patches are so expensive, she wants to pay it forward."I know how to sew and I’m gonna make hats and caps and wraps and start donating them to people that need them," Alston said. The center, affiliated with the University of Maryland, offers a comprehensive approach with integrative wellness, treating the patient, not just the disease. "It’s one thing to take care of the cancer, but you can’t forget the rest of the patient and what they are going through," Regine said. The program started at the end of January and  offers yoga therapy, expressive art, acupuncture and meditation, something Alston found very useful. "It’s a whole health approach so you look at the entire person: mind, body, spirit, all of those different components that fall under those umbrellas. A man is hospitalized, but expected to survive, after his girlfriend struck him with her car following a domestic argument, according to police in Port St. Lucie, Florida.The incident happened in the 1900 block of W. Dunbrooke Circle.Police said the man got out of the car and began walking down the street and the woman then dropped off her baby at their house, drove back to where the man was walking and hit him.Video posted by police shows crime scene tape around a car which appears to have a big dent in the hood and a shattered windshield.The man, described as the woman's 24-year-old live-in boyfriend, was airlifted to a hospital with head trauma.  He was undergoing surgery late Wednesday afternoon.Police did not identify either person but said the investigation continues. “It sounded like a car hitting a shopping cart," said Lance Chmura who lives just across the street from the crash scene. He was making breakfast around 9 a.m. when he heard the impact and ran out to help.“I went down, grabbed his hand and stabilized him because he was starting to thrash around a bit," said Chmura.The impact of the crash was so intense it sent the man flying 35 yards down the street.“She (the girlfriend) then left the scene, drove back home.  Her relative got in car and came back to the scene," said Master Sgt. Frank Sabol with Port St. Lucie Police.The victim’s grandmother would not reveal what the girlfriend said to her immediately after the crash, but said the couple had a good relationship and had just moved down here last month. She said she thinks this was an accident.“I think they were just playing around and didn’t realize the severity of it," said the grandmother.“The initial investigation determines she was on the wrong side of the road when he was struck," added Sgt. A man charged with murder in the Gary, Indiana area remains at large after he escaped from a prisoner transport vehicle on Monday.According to the Chicago Tribune, Leon Taylor, 22, escaped from a vehicle driven by a private contractor when the driver stopped at a McDonald's drive-thru near Gary.Video released by the Lake County (Indiana) Sheriff's Office shows Taylor open the door of the vehicle while it was stopped in the drive-thru. Taylor ran across a busy street as the driver of the vehicle chased him.Taylor was being extradited from Texas to the Lake County Jail in Crown Point, Indiana, by REDI Transport. Initially, the REDI Transport driver told the Lake County Sheriff's Office that Taylor had escaped from the video."After watching this video, I am highly disturbed and disappointed by the procedures the private transportation driver used during the transfer of this suspect to our jail," Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr. said in a news release. "I find it appalling that REDI Transports failed to use appropriate caution and may have put the public at risk."Police initially said that Taylor had been wearing a belly chain, handcuffs and a leg brace at the time of his escape. However, according to WLS-TV in Chicago the sheriff's office says the video now shows that Taylor likely was not handcuffed and that security footage shows him struggling with the leg braces throughout the trip."We believe shackles could have prevented the suspect from getting away," Martinez said.REDI Transport, which is based in Green Bay, Wisconsin, says it has opened an investigation into the incident."REDI Transports continues to cooperate fully with those investigating the prisoner escape that occurred yesterday afternoon in Gary, Indiana," the company said in a statement on Tuesday. "We are also conducting our own internal investigation into what happened and are determining what procedural or process changes may be needed to ensure this does not happen again."Taylor is wanted on murder charges in connection with an East Chicago, Indiana homicide.
