The death toll from a series of wildfires in western states rose sharply Thursday evening, and officials expect more casualties and damage in the coming days.A total of 17 people have been killed in wildfires in California, Oregon and Washington in recent days. More than 100 fires are currently burning throughout 13 western states.On Thursday evening, officials with the Butte County Sheriff's Office in California announced that seven more people had died in what is now known as the North Complex Fire, according to ABC News. That brings the death toll from that particular fire up to 10, with 16 people still missing.ABC News also reports that one other person died Thursday in the Slater Fire, which is currently burning in Siskiyou County, California.A total of four people have been killed in a series of wildfires in Oregon in recent days. One person died Thursday in the Almeda Fire in the southern part of the state, bringing the total death toll to two. Two others died in a wildfire near Salem on Wednesday.In Washington, a 1-year-old boy was killed by the Cold Springs Fire, which is currently burning in the northeast part of the state.USA Today reports that more than 500,000 people in Oregon have been forced to evacuate due to the wildfires — more than 10% of the state's population. Many of the fires burning in Oregon are currently 0% contained — further threatening forest, 900,000 acres of which have already been burned in the state. That's more than double what typically burns in an entire year.“We have never seen this amount of uncontained fire across the state,” Oregon Gov. Kate Brown said Thursday.The New York Times reports that officials in California, Oregon and Washington are struggling to find the manpower for fighting the fires, as nearby states deal with their own outbreaks of wildfires.On Thursday evening, President Donald Trump approved an emergency declaration for the wildfires in Oregon, which allows FEMA and the Department of Homeland Security to coordinate disaster relief efforts. 2038
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is now publicly acknowledging people can be infected with the coronavirus through airborne transmission, especially in enclosed spaces with inadequate ventilation.The update embraces growing evidence and international research showing the coronavirus can linger in the air longer - for minutes and hours - and travel farther than six feet.The update comes two weeks after the official CDC website was updated to reflect this, only to be removed a few days later with the agency saying it was “posted in error” before it was fully reviewed.The draft language seemed to imply aerosol or airborne transmission was the main way the coronavirus spreads, and the CDC says that is not the case.“Infections occur mainly through exposure to respiratory droplets when a person is in close contact with someone who has COVID-19,” the CDC states.Their added section is titled “COVID-19 can sometimes be spread by airborne transmission,” and includes information about smaller particles lingering in the air after an infected person had left the space. "Some infections can be spread by exposure to virus in small droplets and particles that can linger in the air for minutes to hours," it reads.“There is evidence that under certain conditions, people with COVID-19 seem to have infected others who were more than 6 feet away. These transmissions occurred within enclosed spaces that had inadequate ventilation. Sometimes the infected person was breathing heavily, for example while singing or exercising,” the new section on the CDC’s website reads. “These transmissions occurred within enclosed spaces that had inadequate ventilation.”The World Health Organization changed their guidance in July and noted the prevalence of airborne transmission of coronavirus and particles lingering in the air. The FDA continued on Monday to warn the public about using methanol-based hand sanitizers that the agency calls “dangerous.”The FDA has published a “Do Not Use” list of products. As of Monday afternoon, 87 products are on the do not use list. Adding to the confusion for consumers, many of the products do not have methanol on the label.Methanol can be toxic when absorbed through the skin as well as life-threatening when ingested, the FDA said. Retailers are being encouraged to recall these products.Methanol exposure can result in nausea, vomiting, headache, blurred vision, permanent blindness, seizures, coma, permanent damage to the nervous system or death, the FDA warns."Practicing good hand hygiene, which includes using alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not readily available, is an important public health tool for all Americans to employ. Consumers must also be vigilant about which hand sanitizers they use, and for their health and safety we urge consumers to immediately stop using all hand sanitizers on the FDA's list of dangerous hand sanitizer products," said FDA Commissioner Stephen M. Hahn, M.D. "We remain extremely concerned about the potential serious risks of alcohol-based hand sanitizers containing methanol. Producing, importing and distributing toxic hand sanitizers poses a serious threat to the public and will not be tolerated. The FDA will take additional action as necessary and will continue to provide the latest information on this issue for the health and safety of consumers."The FDA’s warnings come following a hand sanitizer shortage in the consumer and commercial markets. The end of July is expected to be a busy time for courts where eviction cases are handled across the country.As the funding from the CARES Act is closing in on its end so is reprieve for renters, who have had difficulty making their monthly rent payments.“There’s a lot of fear,” said attorney Zach Neumann. “People are really concerned about where they’re going to go when that [eviction] demand is placed on their door.”According to the U.S. Census Bureau Pulse Survey, approximately 30 percent of renters have little to no confidence that they can make their next housing payment.CBS News reported during the month of May, 20 percent of renters failed to pay rent on time.“I think you have people who are behind on their rent right now, who haven’t been able to make full payment,” said Neumann. “I think the bigger source of [eviction] filings is going to be in early September when we are definitively out of the CARES Act money window.”To help renters and homeowners with mortgages in Colorado, Neumann started the COVID-19 Eviction Defense Project in late March. He said after seeing people post on Facebook that they were worried about their payments, he put up a post saying he would help them free of charge. Overnight, he says he got more than 500 direct messages asking for his services.“I think the reason that this is going to lead to so many more evictions is because it’s longer-lasting,” said Neumann. “Also, the financial hit is uniform across groups of people.”To give renters more time, the CARES Act instituted a 60-day moratorium on evictions for people living in federally financed rentals, which covers 25 percent of all rentals in the United States, according to the Urban Institute. That moratorium is set to expire on July 26.Cities across the country also put their own eviction moratoriums into place, but many of those are set to expire at the end of July as well.Nine thousand evictions cases resumed in Memphis, once its moratorium ended last month. In Virginia, 12,000 eviction cases were filed when its moratorium was lifted.“There are people in serious crisis and our neighbors are suffering,” said Tammy Morales, who serves as a city commissioner in Seattle.In May, Morales introduced legislation banning landlords from using eviction history as grounds to deny tenancy to renters for up to six months after the pandemic. The bill passed in with all but one commissioner voting yes.“There are cascading effects of this crisis, and this is one piece that we are able to do at the local level to help people,” said Morales.“It’s harder to hold onto your job. It’s harder to keep your kids in school. It’s harder to maintain a workable level of health,” said Neumann about evictions. “What you see is after an eviction folks spend months and months unsuccessfully looking for housing.” 2826
