BEIJING, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- China and Cuba Wednesday held a banquet to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties.Zhou Yongkang, a member of China's top leadership, and visiting Vice President of the Council of Ministers of Cuba Ricardo Cabrisas Ruiz addressed the banquet.Zhou, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, said China-Cuba relations have endured the changes of the international situation for 50 years. The two countries have also deepened exchange and cooperation in politics, economics and culture."We see from history that it is the common hope of both parties, countries and peoples to maintain a friendly relationship. It is also in the interests of both sides," Zhou said.He said China values its traditional friendship with Cuba.He also said China admires Cuba for its insistence on its sovereignty and its adherence to socialism."China will firmly support Cuba to find a way to development in accordance with its national situation. China will provide assistance to Cuba to help its social and economic development," Zhou said. The senior CPC official also thanked Cuba for its firm support on issues concerning China's sovereignty, security and dignity, saying the CPC, the Chinese government and the Chinese people will never forget Cuba's support."Facts prove that China and Cuba are good friends, comrades and brothers," Zhou said.He also urged more friendly exchange between the two countries to further enhance people-to-people exchange and promote the development of China-Cuba relations.Hailing the establishment of China-Cuba ties as the start of China's friendship with Latin American countries, Cabrisas said the China-Cuba relations will achieve further development with efforts from both sides. In 1960, Cuba was the first Latin American nation to forge diplomatic relations with China.

BEIJING, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- Participants at a human rights forum in Beijing have paid tribute to China's treatment of human rights issues."We have a different culture. The Chinese have a different culture. We would appreciate the situation where human rights are dealt with within their own cultural contexts," Elisabeth Perioli Bjornstol, a Norwegian participant on a panel discussion at the forum, said Wednesday. The panel discussion was a part of the two-day Beijing Forum on Human Rights that started Tuesday. The forum attracted about 80 officials, scholars and experts from more than 25 countries, regions and international organizations.China's human rights situation was one of the focal points at the forum."It is highly important to reflect and discuss the key issues of human rights worldwide. People now can come and see how China develops. Ignorance and lack of information were the root causes for many conflicts," Elisabeth Perioli Bjornstol added.Jiang Guoqing, a professor from China Foreign Affairs University, said on the same panel discussion that since reform and opening up was initiated in 1978, China has made great progress in both human rights and modernization. He Ying, vice president of Heilongjiang University, said, "The West often criticizes China for not progressing fast. It also criticizes China for its recognition of individuals' rights. But I think the West needs to recognize China as a developing country that is moving in the right direction in many fields."

TAIPEI, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- Financial organizations from the Chinese mainland and Taiwan have stepped up cooperation to take advantage of business opportunities brought by a landmark cross-Strait economic pact, the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA).The board of directors of Taiwan-based Taishin Financial Holdings decided on Sept. 9 to sign a cooperation agreement with mainland-based Nanjing Zijin Investment Co., a move hailed by the company as "the first step to enter the mainland."The agreement aims to promote exchanges and cooperation between the two companies and their subsidiaries, while Nanjing Zijin will ease the way for Taishin's new operations on the mainland, Taishin said. The company's Taishin Bank is also planning to set up an office in Nanjing, capital of east China's Jiangsu Province.Prior to this, China Huarong Asset Management Corporation (CHAMC) and Taiwan-based SinoPac Holdings signed an agreement in Beijing on Sept. 3 to begin a new strategic cooperation. According to the agreement, the two sides will cooperate in personnel training, exchange of management experiences and information, as well as in research, development of new products and new business models.Huarong President Lai Xiaomin said the ECFA would promote a quickening flow of economic resources across the Taiwan Strait, including the movement of personnel, materials, capital and information."The ECFA will bring great business opportunities for cross-Strait economic development and boost cooperation between financial institutions on both sides, thus bringing new development opportunities for financial industries across the Strait," he said. The ECFA, which is to take effect on Sunday, was signed by negotiators from the mainland and Taiwan in June, and aims to establish a systematic mechanism for enhancing cross-Strait economic cooperation.Wang Jianmin, a researcher of the Institute of Taiwan Studies of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said substantial financial cooperation between the two sides has lagged behind trade cooperation for a long time."The ECFA, however, will have a positive impact," he said. The banking service sectors might be among the first to make breakthroughs in cross-Strait financial cooperation. The mainland-based Bank of China and Bank of Communications applied to the Taiwan economic department on Sept. 7 to set up representative offices in Taiwan.According to the ECFA, mainland banks can set up representative offices in Taiwan upon approval by the Taiwan authority and can then apply to set up a branch bank one year after the establishment of representative offices on the island.

SHANGHAI, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- China's intellectual property rights (IPR) authorities Saturday vowed to play a larger role in the global cause of IPR protection while being more responsible to innovators and the public. The State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO) Director Tian Lipu made the pledge at a press conference held to recognize the 25th anniversary of Sino-EU cooperation on IPR protection.Tian said that China and the EU, as two major economies with close trade relations, should further co-operate to create a better environment to encourage and protect innovation in the business world. At the event, European Patent Office (EPO) President Benoit Battistelli told Xinhua he was optimistic about the future of IPR protection in China, given the rapid progress being made in the country.Battistelli said relations between the EPO and the SIPO would "continue to be decisive for the successful future development of the patent system on a global level."Commemorations of the anniversary, held at the ongoing Shanghai World Expo, also included a demonstration of a real-world IPR enforcement case in a moot court setting. The EPO started cooperating with China in 1985. The two sides are currently implementing the EU-China IPR2 project utilizing a 16 million Euros budget that runs over four years to 2011.Both the EPO and the SIPO are among the world's five largest patent offices, together with the Japan Patent Office, the Korean IP Office, and the United States Patent and Trademark Office.China has also grown into one of the most important non-EU countries filing patent applications to the EPO, with the number of patents submitted increasing from 163 in 2000 to 1,621 in 2009.
