Close II. "We know it's fancy and that's why we're doing it be the real issue is to get you out there to vote."Dr. Close owns Henri P. Close Funeral Service in Baltimore and is also the president of The National Funeral Directors & Morticians Association."Funeral directors have always been the quiet ones in the background," said Dr. Close. "We were always the Underground Railroad. Our limousines and our cars were always used, even when you go back to Selma when you go back to Montgomery. The funeral directors always provided transportation because people didn’t have that mode of transportation. The funeral home always had that mode of transportation."Close said the goal of NFDMA is to offer free rides to 300,000 registered voters in Baltimore, Miami, Detroit, Los Angeles, and Kansas City."Some people are using their Mercedes," said Close. "Some people are using their sedans; some are using sprinters. Even though it might be huge it’s a limited number of people we're transporting at a time."According to the organization, the initiative has helped Baltimoreans get to the polls for 25 years, with ridership peaking on election days in 2008 and 2012.Talking with WMAR, Dr. Close emphasized that transportation is more crucial this year as people attempt to vote safely during the pandemic."There are fewer polling places," he said. "so there is a need for transportation. Now we're the above-ground railroad to get people to the polls, no matter where they stand on issues."Because of COVID-19, the vehicles will be sanitized before and after voters get in. Face masks are required for both drivers and passengers. Both chambers of Congress voted on Monday on a long-awaited COVID-19 relief package. A deal was reached among Congressional leaders Sunday evening, who worked through the weekend to smooth over differences, after months of tense negotiations.The vote passed the House by a 359-53 margin. Several hours later, the measure was approved by the US Senate by a 91-7 margin. The bill now goes to President Donald Trump for his approval. The bill included 0-a-week in supplemental jobless benefits, direct payments of 0 for individuals, more than 0 billion in small business loans and more than billion for schools, as well as billions for help with vaccine distribution.The relief bill is not expected to have money for state and local government aid, something Democrats had been pushing for as municipalities experience sharp declines in tax revenues.However, the measure would extend the deadline for using CARES Act funding from earlier this year. The deadline to use that funding without losing it had been the end of the year.The pandemic relief package is connected to a larger .4 trillion spending package that must get passed by Congress to keep the government running and fund it through September 30, 2021.Congress passed a two-day government funding bill Friday evening to push the shutdown deadline to Sunday night at midnight. The House then approved a one-day extension of government funding Sunday night, which Trump signed, according to the Washington Post, to allow the COVID-19 relief package to be finalized so both measures can be voted on together.The possibility of a relief bill deal happened earlier in the day Sunday, after late-night conversations Saturday over a key sticking point about the role of the Federal Reserve.Republican Senator Pat Toomey had pushed a provision late last week to pull back to the role of the central bank’s emergency lending authority, after it was given some abilities with the CARES ACT earlier this year. He wanted to rescind some of the unused funds from the emergency loan program, as well as stop some of the changes to the Fed approved in the CARES Act.Democrats said the provision would tie the hands of President-elect Biden’s administration and limit options for aid in 2021. BAR HARBOR, Maine (AP) — A proposal from lawmakers in New England and California to give free access to national parks to wounded veterans is poised to become law. The Wounded Veterans Recreation Act has passed the U.S. House of Representatives after previously passing the U.S. Senate. Maine Republican Sen. Susan Collins, New Hampshire Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen and Democratic California Rep. Raul Ruiz proposed the law. The lawmakers say the bill is designed to change the 2004 Federal Lands Recreation Enhancement Act to make veterans with a service-connected disability eligible for a free lifetime pass to U.S. national parks. 645

BARTOW, Fla. — The grave of a U.S. veteran buried 19 years ago in Bartow, Florida was dug up, according to Bartow Police. His clothes were taken right off his body and found on the ground near the casket. Family members said they can’t understand who would do this. The grave belongs to 75-year-old Willie Graham, who was laid to rest in 1999 after he spent his entire life giving to others. He served in the Army during World War II and was a math teacher in Polk County for years. Graham is well known in the Bartow community, and his grave site is next to his mother and father and several other relatives."To take his funeral garb, his clothing off of him and just have it thrown on the ground, I just can't wrap my head around it,” said Cheryl Brown, Willie Graham’s niece. Her family came to the site Sunday to lay flowers down on her mother's grave when they noticed a blue tarp on top of Graham's grave site. According to police, it had been discovered by a city parks and recreation employee on May 10. "It had to take two or three people several hours to get this done. It had to be done at night where no one can see it,” said family member Otto Brown.  Family members are confused why police couldn’t find any of them to notify, but police said they don’t have records because it’s not city property.The report said police attempted to get information from the funeral home that did the burial 19 years ago, but said they also don’t own the property. Scripps station WFTS in Tampa reached out to Coney Funeral Home, and are waiting to hear back.Police said they are also trying to find out who did this. Brown said they don't bury their family members with valuables."That's a very evil human being that did this and the world could do without them,” Otto Brown said. Willie’s wife, who lives in Miami, can’t make it to the gravesite because she just had hip surgery, but said she is also sick to her stomach over this. "Right now what's important is for us to put my uncle back at rest,” Cheryl Brown said.The family is in contact with police at this point. Officers said they will work with the family to get this grave site cleaned up and back to where it should be.  2290
