A proposed bill to ban non-medically required male circumcision on babies and children in Iceland is receiving backlash from religious communities."Those procedures are unnecessary, done without their informed consent, non-reversible and can cause all kinds of severe complications, disfigurations and even death," said Icelandic Progressive Party MP Silja D?gg Gunnarsdottir.She said a child should be old enough to give "informed consent" for the procedure and defended the proposed ban as being about protecting children's rights, adding that it would "not go against the religious right of their parents."The European Jewish Congress (EJC), condemned the bill saying the ban would be an "effective deterrent" that would "guarantee that no Jewish community will be established" in the country."Iceland would be the only country to ban one of the most central, if not the most central rite in the Jewish tradition in modern times," the EJC statement said, adding that this would "attack Judaism in a way that concerns Jews all over the world."One in three men globally are estimated to be circumcised, with the majority for religious and cultural reasons.If the ban were to come into effect it would be a "violation to the right of religious freedom," according to Imam Ahmad Seddeeq of the Islamic Cultural Centre of Iceland, who estimates the country's Muslim community to have "at least" 2,500 members."People who believe in something try to do it as long as it is legal, if it's not legal here they will do it in [their] home countries or other countries," Seddeeq told CNN.A 2012 review by the American academy of pediatrics found the health benefits of circumcision to outweigh the risks, though not great enough to recommend the procedure become routine."The health benefits of circumcision include lower risks of acquiring HIV, genital herpes, human papilloma virus and syphilis. A Southwest flight from Nashville to Phoenix had to circle around and come back to Nashville after the plane hit a bird.The flight took off from Nashville International Airport Wednesday around 5:13 a.m. local time.The flight path showed Flight 577 circle from west to north, turning back south to head back to the airport shortly after takeoff.Scripps station WTVF in Nashville learned the flight had to land due to an Alert 1, meaning the plane possibly had a minor electrical or mechanical problem. Airline officials confirmed the plane experienced a bird strike.No injuries or other issues have been reported.The plane was taken out of service for maintenance, and the airline said they're working with affected passengers to help them on to their destinations.The incident comes just a day after one person died when a Southwest flight made an emergency landing at the Philadelphia airport when an explosion damaged an engine and broke a window. 978

A Pennsylvania couple is facing criminal charges after police say they hid the body of their infant daughter in a plastic container filled with cat litter in a crawlspace inside their home, according to the Berks County District Attorney’s Office.Samantha Trump, 27, and Shaun Oxenreider, 25, are charged with abuse of a corpse, concealing the whereabouts of a child and criminal conspiracy, according to a criminal complaint.Spring Township police began an investigation when two relatives of Oxenreider contacted them, reporting that they’d heard about the death of the 6-month old baby, the criminal complaint says.Officials are still trying to determine how and when the child died. An autopsy has been scheduled.Police say a relative of Oxenreider told them he’d heard several stories about what happened to the baby and who paid for the funeral expenses from Oxenreider, according to the criminal complaint.Police spoke to a Berks County Children and Youth Services caseworker to follow up with the report, the criminal complaint says. The caseworker spoke to Oxenreider and Trump on the phone, then told police their statements were suspicious. The caseworker also told police she could find no record of the baby’s name with either Trump or Oxenreider as a last name at any Berks-area hospital, or at the funeral home where the couple said they had the baby’s remains cremated.When asked to provide a death certificate for the child, Trump told the caseworker that she and Oxenreider were in New Jersey visiting a relative, and would not be back until after Easter, according to the criminal complaint.On Monday night, the criminal complaint says, a relative drove past the couple’s home on the 1300 block of West Wyomissing Court and saw Oxenreider’s vehicle parked outside. The relative contacted police, who went to the home to investigate.The couple initially did not allow police inside, the criminal complaint says. Officers spoke to Trump through the door while Oxenreider attended to the couple’s other child.As the investigating officer and child protective services officials arrived on the scene, Oxenreider left the home, and Trump remained at the door, the criminal complaint says. Trump then dropped to the ground and went into convulsions during questioning by investigators. She was taken to Reading Hospital for treatment, according to the criminal complaint.Police continued to speak to Oxenreider. Shortly after midnight, they asked his permission to search the home, the criminal complaint says. Officers made it clear that they wanted to look in spaces that could potentially conceal a child.Oxenreider agreed to the search.Police eventually searched a locked bathroom, that Oxenreider opened with a key. Inside they discovered used diapers, pictures of the baby, and baby clothing. A door inside the bathroom leading to a crawl space was also found. When police looked inside, they found a large plastic container with the lid snapped shut, the criminal complaint says. The container was filled with cat litter.Officers noticed a plastic trash bag sticking out of the litter. When the bag was pulled out and cut open, the criminal complaint says, police discovered the child’s body inside.Oxenreider was arrested without incident, according to the Berks County District Attorney’s Office. A storm system causing severe weather Sunday along the Gulf Coast is forecast to move off the East Coast, turn into a nor'easter and threaten the Northeastern United States on Monday night into Tuesday.The storm's exact path remains a bit uncertain, but the system will bring precipitation and wind in what will be the third significant winter storm in the past 10 days.A winter storm watch is in effect for 8.5 million people in New England, including residents of Boston and Portland, Maine. The National Weather Service Boston estimated 6 to 8 inches of snow for parts of Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut.New York, Philadelphia and Washington are only under a hazardous weather outlook at this time. The next forecast update will come at 8 p.m. on Sunday.The American model forecasts heavy snowfall for areas of New England and upstate New York, whereas the European model shows less snowfall. Still, both models agree there will be more snow on the way for the Northeast.If the nor'easter tracks closer to the coast, then stronger winds and coastal flooding may become issues as well.Last weekend, a powerful nor'easter that morphed into a "bomb cyclone" slammed much of the Northeast with heavy snow and rain, hurricane-force wind gusts, and significant coastal flooding. The storm dropped heavy, wet snow in areas west of Interstate 95, leaving feet of snow in some areas.
