"We both agree to further push forward the positive, cooperative and comprehensive China-U.S. relationship," Hu said, adding that both sides also pledged to forge "a China-U.S. cooperative partnership based on mutual respect and mutual benefit" for the benefit of the two countries and beyond.Meanwhile, the two sides "should firmly adhere to the right direction," respecting each other's core interests and handling their relations with a long-term perspective, which will enable both countries to make greater contributions to world peace and development, he said.Citing the growing number of global challenges, the Chinese president stressed that Beijing and Washington "share expanding common interests and shoulder increasing common responsibilities."Accordingly, he added, the two sides have agreed to strengthen exchanges and cooperation in economy, trade, environment, education, science and technology, non-proliferation and counter-terrorism among many other fields.During Hu's ongoing state visit, the two countries signed a number of cooperation agreements. "These will inject fresh momentum into our bilateral cooperation and create a great many job opportunities for our two countries," Hu said.He added that he and Obama also discussed some disagreements in the economic and trade area, with both sides pledging "to continue to appropriately resolve these according to the principle of mutual respect and consultation on an equal footing."Commenting on the relations between the countries's armed forces, Hu said, "We believe expansion of military exchanges and cooperation will be conducive to deepening mutual trust between our two countries."On the situation on the Korean Peninsula, he said that both countries agreed to work together with relevant parties to maintain peace and stability on the peninsula, promote denuclearization of the peninsula and achieve lasting peace and security in Northeast Asia. The Chinese leader reaffirmed China's firm commitment to the path of peaceful development and a win-win strategy of opening up, and appreciated Obama's commitment to a positive and constructive China policy."China is a friend and partner of all countries, and China's development is an opportunity for the world," he said.

NEW DELHI, March 5 (Xinhua) -- Doctors in India have claimed to have successfully performed a rare robotic heart surgery on a 23- year-old person at a hospital in the southern Indian city of Chennai, local media reported Saturday.Dr. R. Ravi Kumar, the Director of the Institute of Cardiovascular Disease at the Chettinad Health City, said the robotically assisted procedure involved replacing both the mitral and the aortal valve simultaneously. The surgery carried out on D. Vijayakanth, an auto driver from Vellore, was done by a three armed robot, took four hours and cost 225,000 rupees (4,500 U.S. dollars)."The best part about using a robot in cardiac surgery is that the patient's heart need not be opened and the surgery can be done using a small 4cm incision. This is not possible with normal surgeries without a robot," Dr Ravi Kumar was quoted by local daily The Times of India as saying.Robotic surgery, which is fairly new in the country, can be used for a gamut of medical procedures, said Dr Ravi Kumar."It requires a lot of precision and intense training because though the robotic hands do the surgery, it has to be controlled by a trained surgeon. One of the biggest disadvantages is the lack of sensory perception which is there when the surgeon actually does the surgery himself," he said.
BEIJING, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) - Beijing has seen the arrival of 660,000 tourists during the first three days of the Spring Festival holiday, from Feb. 2 to 4, said Beijing Municipal Bureau of Tourism officials late Friday. The tourism data was collected at the city' s 22 scenic spots. On February 4, official statistics showed that 40,000 tourists swarmed into the Palace Museum, repeating the number from last year' s national holiday, while about 14,500 ski-lovers enjoyed their time at 14 ski resorts in Beijing on the same day.Not only scenic spots, tourists also gravitated to some cultural venues in Beijing. The Beijing-based National Art Museum of China holds an exhibition on "donated masterpieces over the past 50 years (since its completion in 1952)" from Jan. 27 to Feb. 26 and spectators can visit, free of charge, during the Spring Festival holiday (between Feb. 3 and 9).On February 5, visitors queued up in a 200-meter long line waiting for check-in to the museum around 10 a.m.Wang Xiumei, 86, decided to visit the museum with her daughter ten days before."My husband and I were crazy about traditional Chinese paintings decades ago, I have to see some masterpieces today, rather than hearing about them later." Wang said.Hundreds of the nation' s art works are displayed in a dozen halls in the five-storey exhibition area, including oil paintings, ink paintings, wood block prints, shadow puppets, paper cuttings, clay sculptures and embroideries."I changed my mind and got off the bus on my way to a temple fair. My children and I want to see some elegant art works, as opposed to eating and playing during Spring Festival as before," said another citizen named Lu Hongmao.Big cities like Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou opened their sports venues to the public during the Spring Festival holiday.
