UNITED NATIONS, April 14 (Xinhua) -- Representatives from UN Security Council members and other countries on Wednesday sent their deep condolences to the Chinese government and people for a strong earthquake that hit the northwestern part of the country and killed at least 589 people.The diplomats from nearly 40 countries and the European Union offered their condolences to China when they were taking the floor at an open Council debate on the situation in the Middle East, which kicked off here Wednesday morning. The representatives were from the only countries which inscribed to speak at the open debate.Representatives from Austria, Bosnia, Brazil, Britain, France, Gabon, Japan, Lebanon, Nigeria, Russia and the United States offered their condolences to the Chinese delegation for the 7.1-magnitude earthquake, which struck northwest China's Qinghai Province early Wednesday.Condolences were also from such countries as Afghanistan, Argentina, Botswana, Cuba, Egypt, Iran, Kenya, Kuwait, Nicaragua, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Syria, Tunisia and Venezuela.Earlier, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and president of the UN General Assembly Ali Treki also sent their deep condolences to China over the strong earthquake.At least 589 people have reportedly died and 10,000 others were injured in the wake of the deadly earthquake, local authorities said.

Four pits and cracks were reported near the villages, with the biggest having a diameter of more than 70 meters and depth of 20 meters.Increased water flow in underground rivers in wake of the torrential rains could have caused the subsidence, a Laibin municipal government official said.Heavy rains began pounding Guangxi Monday and triggered landslides early Wednesday.Across Guangxi, the rainstorms had battered 27 counties and 144,800 people had been evacuated by 4 p.m. Thursday, the regional civil affairs bureau said.In addition, 8,123 houses had collapsed and 161,830 hectares of crops had been damaged. The direct economic losses were estimated at 1.2 billion yuan (176 million U.S. dollars).

HAIKOU, April 25 (Xinhua) -- China's fishery administration said on Sunday it had started regular patrols of the South China Sea, sending two vessels to take over from two others currently escorting Chinese fishing boats in the area."China Yuzheng 301 and 302 take over from China Yuzheng 311 and 202, which have been patrolling the sea area of Nansha Islands since April 1," said Wu Zhuang, director of Administration of Fishery and Fishing Harbor Supervision for South China Sea under the Ministry of Agriculture.He said the patrol ships were sent to escort Chinese fishing boats in the South China Sea and reinforce China's fishing rights of the waters around Nansha Islands.The two ships set sail from Sanya, a coastal city in China's Southernmost Island Province of Hainan, on Sunday.China's patrol vessels escort the country's fishing boats and help treat fishermen who fall ill, Wu said. BEIJING, April 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao Wednesday called for greater efforts to fulfill the energy-saving and emission reduction goals set out in the nation's 11th Five Year Plan.According to the plan laid out in 2006, China will cut its per unit GDP energy consumption by 20 percent compared with 2005 levels by the end of 2010.Relevant departments must work harder to help enterprises close down old and polluting production facilities, he said at a State Council meeting.The departments must also suspend approval of new projects by enterprises failing to eliminate backward production capacity, he added.He also stressed efforts to curb the expansion of high energy-consuming industry, and emphasized strict control of exports of goods produced in an energy-inefficient way.Wen said energy-saving and emission reduction are priorities for the construction and transportation industries.Public institutions nationwide are expected to lower their energy consumption by 5 percent year on year in 2010, he added.More energy-conservation and emission-reduction publicity campaigns should be organized to promote the development of "green" consumption, he said.
