SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Metropolitan Transit System officials say ridership spiked in the first quarter of the 2020 fiscal year by more than a million trips compared to the same time last year.From July through September of 2019, 22,258,345 trips were taken on an MTS trolley or bus. In 2018, MTS saw 21,313,801 trips. It's a 4.4% rise from one year to the next."It's encouraging," says MTS Chair Nathan Fletcher.MTS officials say a heavy focus on investment over the past few years is starting to pay off. They recently completed a million plan to streamline services and add frequency to many bus routes. They also added the South Bay Rapid route from Otay Mesa to Downtown and expanded the Rapid Superloop service in the University City area."As we add those services where folks want them, as we squeeze every dime we can get out of our existing budget, as we make a full commitment to engage the community in what they want, people will use it," says Fletcher.The surge in riders helps MTS buck a nationwide trend where public transportation is on the decline.Even in San Diego, year-to-year numbers had been dropping for four straight years, since hitting a record high in 2015 (see chart above).Fletcher says it's a positive step as the city tries to meet strict climate goals that require a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.Recently, SANDAG put out a plan to increase transit ridership to 10%. That sparked a debate over how much money should go towards transit vs. road construction.Fletcher says any money spent on transit also benefits drivers."Every person who chooses transit is one less car driving," he says. "The individual who says, 'I'm always gonna drive,' should support transit because that means less congestion. Less congestion means less toxic pollution and less greenhouse gas emissions. So it's a win for everybody whether you use transit or drive your car."To raise money for more expansion, MTS is looking into a ballot measure for the November 2020 election that would add a half-cent sales tax. 2046

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police released a composite sketch Tuesday in the search for a man suspected of trying to kidnap a 3-year-old girl in the Morena area. The incident happened Sunday about 4:30 p.m. as the girl’s mother was taking her daughter for a walk in her wagon on Savannah Street at Buenos Avenue, police said. The area is residential and two blocks away from busy Morena Boulevard. A man parked his sedan but left the engine running, then approached the mother and child from behind, according to investigators. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diegans spend years saving up enough cash for a down payment on a home, but now the FBI says fraudsters are getting much better at stealing it.Hackers are getting into the emails of private real estate agents and escrow companies - duping would-be buyers into wiring their down payment cash to false accounts. They're also getting tipped off by celebratory Facebook photos about accepted offers, using clues like listing agent signs to get in touch with the buyers and pretend to be escrow companies - asking for payment. In all, the FBI says Americans lost nearly billion in real estate wire fraud in fiscal 2017, up 50 fold from fiscal 2016. San Diego special agent Chris Christopherson says the FBI can reverse wire transfers if contacted quickly after they happen. He said internationally they have a day or two, and domestic about a week. He said San Diegans can protect themselves by verifying payment information they get by email either in person or by phone with a trusted source. "Make sure you're not using a phone number you got from the email, be skeptical, verify it separately," he said. The FBI said another way to help protect yourself is to never to reply to emails that ask for financial information. Instead, forward them to the recipient you know, typing in their address. San Diego realtor Gary Kent was selling a duplex last year when hackers got the buyer to wire a ,000 down payment to a fraudulent account. They mimicked an email pretending to be from the escrow company."The buyer went down to the bank, said 'I need to wire the money,' and they said, this wasn't the same account number you did before," Kent said. Kent noted that the bank was able to reverse the transfer. 1804

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego court records show a history of legal disputes with Clark Construction Group, the company that employed the worker who died in yesterday’s accident on a construction site at UC San Diego.10News found a court complaint over the 2017 death of a driller. Frederick Von Kahl's family sued Clark Construction and other defendants for negligence, alleging they created a dangerous workplace at a San Ysidro job site which reportedly caused a valve to strike Kahl in his chest.Friday afternoon, Kahl family attorney Benjamin Bunn said that the case just recently moved into a settlement agreement. He said that Kahl had been married for 40 years.The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) website revealed that it issued violations and a ,260 fine. In another negligence case, a worker sued Clark Construction Group and other defendants over a 2010 accident at the San Diego Marriot & Marina Hotel, claiming that a large piece of concrete dropped through a roof and struck a worker's body and right arm. The case was later dismissed.There's also a negligence suit that settled after a 91-year-old woman reportedly suffered broken bones from a fall while walking by a downtown construction site that she claimed was unsafe.The Division of Occupational Safety and Health of California (Cal/OSHA) has done at least 10 investigations into the company in the last 10 years. A Cal/OSHA spokesperson said Thursday that most of the investigations involve complaints from workers reporting unsafe conditions, with no violations issued.
