When COVID-19 became a public health emergency this past spring, it caused widespread problems for supply chains that moved food from manufacturers to your local grocery store.Six months after the pandemic started, consumers are still finding several popular food items hard to find. The company that produces "Peeps" (Just Born in Pennsylvania) recently announced that it will not have Halloween or Christmas versions of the popular marshmallow treat this year. The company shut down temporarily for the pandemic and that will also affect the holiday offering of its "Hot Tamales" and "Ike and Mike" fruit candies."I don't think the consumer will know when they walk into a supermarket what is short and what is not short because so many things are disrupted," said John Phillip Tarantino Jr., president of Tarantino Foods, LLC in Buffalo.Tarantino Foods is a wholesale food distributor with 2,000 customers that includes colleges, casinos, restaurants, and pizzerias. The company president told 7 Eyewitness News Reporter Ed Reilly that his business is having a hard time finding many items such as french fries, California dates, certain types of cheese, frozen bread, bread crumbs, ketchup, Kraft ranch dressing, macaroni and cheese, McCormick spices, and packets of hot sauce - to name a few.It is a difficult situation for food service suppliers as retail demand in grocery stores exploded during the crisis and forced manufacturers to redirect their efforts. Some less-profitable items are not being produced. Pasta and flavored drinks have seen those reductions.Tarantino said consumers were looking to buy anything they could stockpile, such as Campbell soups and frozen vegetables.Shut down of food plants with workers afraid of the virus started the problem which increased to a "tsunami" with surging demand by shoppers. That situation was made even more complicated by a severe shortage of product packaging materials. Tarantino said he believes that to be one of the reasons why some food products are having a hard time getting to the shelves currently. The family-owned business is recommending people take advantage of the WNY harvest season to stock-up on corn, tomatoes, and squash. Not only is it plentiful and cheap, but there could be produce problems coming soon as workers are not able to pick citrus and row crops, like lettuce and broccoli, on the West Coast due to the wildfires, added Tarantino. Some viewers asked why canned pumpkin is so hard to find?7 Eyewitness News contacted Libby's and received the following response:"The team in Illinois is currently working hard harvesting Libby’s pumpkins and canning for the upcoming season. We typically begin shipping to retailers around this time for bake season, so you can expect to see pumpkin back on shelves over the next few weeks."Wegmans also sent a statement regarding the shortage of some items:"There are certain products that are still in high demand, for example, cleaning supplies and paper products. While we continue to get shipments of these products to our stores, we are on allocation from the manufacturers. We have purchase limits on these high-demand products to best serve the needs of as many customers as possible."The National Grocers Association sent the following shopping tip:"Consumers should plan ahead of their trip to the store, make a list and purchase what they need for the time, as well as check on the store’s website or social media pages ahead of their trip as stores will communicate important information on product availability and additional tips." One-time strangers are capturing the attention of tens of thousands of people on the internet.Their Virginia Beach photo shoot left many people hoping their on-camera chemistry develops into something more.Baxter Jackson says he “was not expecting somebody as beautiful as [her]” when he met Heather John. The nerves quickly settled for Jackson after he saw John for the first time during a “stranger session” photo shoot at Stumpy Lake Natural Area. The stranger session looks more like and engagement shoot to many people. When asked if they felt the chemistry, Johnson said, “If I say there was no chemistry, I’d be lying.”The photo shoot was Sunday and the pictures were posted Monday. More than 45,000 shares and 15,000 comments later, social media is captivated by the images and the idea that this is only this beginning.“I shared them and then I checked back probably 30 minutes later and I was like, 'Oh my goodness - this escalated really quickly!' I FaceTime him and I was like, 'Have you seen this? It’s wild!'” says John. The internet sounded off, saying divine intervention is at work and foreshadowing a future for the two.Photographer Cassie Bailey picked the pair after putting out an ad asking for a single male and female to do a stranger shoot.“I got home and edited [the pictures] and I was just like, ‘Am I ready to share this? What is going to happen?" says Bailey. The social media reaction has been overwhelmingly positive, but some have criticized the close contact of all three strangers during a pandemic. They say they felt safe because they all recently tested negative for coronavirus. “If we all tested negative, I felt that it was completely safe for us to work together for them to be as close for me to be up close to them,” says Bailey.Bailey likely won’t be doing anymore stranger session before returning home to Louisiana next month. As for Heather and Baxter, they say they are not dating - but they do have “at least three dates” planned. WTKR's Kofo Lasaki first reported this story. 2042

A conservative legal group has filed a lawsuit against Maricopa County claiming that votes were disqualified because some people were given a Sharpie to fill out their ballots. The legal group, Public Interest Legal Foundation, says that the ink from the Sharpies bled through the ballots causing them not to be counted. The Maricopa County Recorder’s Office and the Secretary of State, however, both say concerns that surfaced Wednesday over the use of Sharpies are unfounded. Officials spoke out Wednesday morning, saying the use of a Sharpie to fill out a ballot is perfectly fine and no votes would be discarded for that reason. Did you know we use Sharpies in the Vote Centers so the ink doesn’t smudge as ballots are counted onsite? New offset columns on the ballots means bleed through won’t impact your vote! Find a location before the polls close at 7 p.m. today at https://t.co/8YEmXbWyRL. pic.twitter.com/KKG2O8rQhf— Maricopa County Elections Department (@MaricopaVote) November 3, 2020 The lawsuit was filed on behalf of a voter named Laurie Aguilera, who claims she was given a Sharpie to vote with and was concerned when the ink bled through her ballot. She claims she was told to submit the ballot anyway, and that it was denied. Neither the Secretary of State's Office nor County Recorder's Office have given any information on whether or not there was a separate issue that caused Aguilera's ballot to not be accepted. The questions over Sharpie use on ballots came as ABC News reported Wednesday that Gov. Doug Ducey told the White House he “sees something” that could get Arizona and its 11 electoral votes in the win column for the President. FULL RESULTS: Track election results in ArizonaArizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs is on the record defending the Sharpie ballots, though a ballpoint pen is the recommended method for filling out a ballot.Sharpie is the trademarked name of a permanent felt tip marker. Its use on Arizona ballots became a prominent conversation point on Twitter overnight. The Maricopa County Elections Department says even if marks made by Sharpies or any felt tip marker on a ballot bleed through the paper, it won't impact their tabulator's ability to read contests. Maricopa County's tabulators are designed only to read the ovals for each contest, according to county election officials. Even if ink bleeds through to the other side of the ballot, the ink won't mark another contest, since ballots are printed in an "off-set" pattern, meaning contests on the back side of the ballot don't align with those on the front.Republicans and the Trump campaign were shocked when Fox News declared Democrat Joe Biden the Arizona winner at about 9:30 p.m. on Election Day. Ducey Tweeted his displeasure as Fox News election analysts defended the decision. Arizona remains too close to call in most media projections, but AP called Biden as the winner early Wednesday. ABC15 data analyst Garrett Archer says as votes are counted, the President will likely pick up more votes than Biden and the Democrat’s lead will shrink. It’s unclear if the President can overtake Biden, who is riding the wave of record early voting that favors Democrats. Tabulation continues throughout the state, focusing on ballots that were dropped off on Election Day and those that arrived by mail and were not part of the early counting process that began October 20. View this post on Instagram Our country is crippled and on its knees, begging to be heard and pleading for change. Where is our compassionate leader? The leader who unifies and inspires our country at our most painful time when we need it the most. The leader who steps up and takes full accountability for our country and embraces every color in it. The leader who picks our country up off its knees and says you have my word - we got this - and together, change will happen. Where are you? Because we’re all here. Maybe one day that galvanizing leader will emerge. Either way, the process to change has already begun. #normalizeequality #blacklivesmatter A post shared by therock (@therock) on Jun 3, 2020 at 7:33pm PDT 754
