CARMEL, Ind. -- A 22-year-old man stole a popular English bulldog from a family's yard last year, leading to a social media campaign to try and find him, police say.Reid Albrecht, 22, is accused of stealing a bulldog, named Gus, from a yard in the 3000 block of Hazel Foster Drive. The theft happened in October 2017. During the Carmel Police Department's investigation of Gus' disappearance, multiple people said they remembered seeing Albrecht with a bulldog that matched the description. Albrecht had been telling people he adopted the bulldog from the Humane Society, but neither the Indianapolis nor the Hamilton County Humane Society had a record of him adopting an animal.Albrecht was known to live with his father at a house about 1,000 feet from the victim's house. At the time of his arrest, Albrecht was in jail serving a 180-day sentence for possession of a controlled substance and possession of marijuana. The Facebook page "Gus is Missing" has nearly 1,900 likes, with many people sharing and commenting that they hope Gus will be returned to his home. CARLSBAD, Calif. — A North County company says it's closing in on the technology to keep lithium-ion batteries from igniting. In the last year, the rechargeable batteries have caught fire in Teslas, E-cigarettes, and smartphones. The incidents led to an emergency ban by the Federal Aviation Administration prohibiting shipping the batteries on passenger planes. "The issue has always been there, but now I think because lithium is so prevalent, we're seeing increased cases," said Jenna King, chief executive of Carlsbad-based Amionix.Kings said the industry has largely focused on protecting the battery from the outside, such as through cooling systems and protective layers. She said the batteries ignite due to an overcharge situation or internal short-circuit. Amionix instead is developing what it's calling SafeCore, essentially a circuit breaker on the inside to keep the battery from igniting. "If your battery management fails, or it's never even active because it's an internal short within the cell, our technology is going to protect you," King said. King said Amionix is now working with companies across industries to make sure their product works with their technologies. She declined to specify the companies but said they are well-known. She hopes to have the safety product in consumers' hands by next year, noting that it's inexpensive to manufacture and therefore should have a negligible impact on consumer prices. 1445

CAMPO, Calif. (KGTV) — Extreme heat swept through San Diego County Friday, with many areas reaching triple-digit temperatures. But some residents said they were more miserable than usual, as their power was shut off for half the day.The heatwave is here, and for those living in the deserts, things are just unbearable."My swamp cooler is going 24 hours, and I've got my ceiling fan going!" Campo resident Karen McIntyre said. But McIntyre says she is one of the lucky ones. She is worried more about her family living in Lake Morena, who, for about half the day, did not have any power."During the middle of a pandemic, during the middle of an extreme heatwave, they still send out notices advising them that they're going to be turning the power off today!" McIntyre said about her power company, SDGE.Although dated July 27, McIntrye says her family in Lake Morena received a letter from SDGE explaining the planned power outage on July 30, less than 24 hours before the planned outage. She said she had to scramble to get her two-year-old niece a place to cool off."She has a medical condition where she has to have her oxygen," McIntyre said. "She's on a feeding tube, and she has to stay in a cool house. And going out to another place or another home is stressful for her."The County has set up a few Cool Zones in East County. But McIntyre says her family and many others do not have the means to get there."That’s still too far away for a lot of people who have limited transportation," McIntyre said.SDGE says due to the extreme heat, it canceled all non-critical planned outages for Friday and the weekend. But a spokesperson said the one affecting the Delzura, Potrero, and the Campo area is a critical case of safety, where they have to replace wood poles to steel. They sent ABC 10News a statement that reads in part: 1838

CAMPO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Border Patrol Sunday rescued a Mexican national with serious injuries they say was left behind by a criminal smuggling organization. The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department notified the agency around 4 a.m. December 1 about a distress call of a man in a rural area near Lake Morena Reservoir. The 34-year-old man was suffering from a serious leg injury, Border Patrol says. The man was rushed to a nearby hospital to undergo “extensive surgery to repair his leg.” “I am proud that the agents continue to go above and beyond with their acts of service,” said San Diego Sector Chief Patrol Agent Douglas Harrison. “These Transnational Criminal Organizations (TCO) are exploiting, abusing, and profiting from the desperation of these vulnerable people.”RELATED: Border Patrol rescues 5 migrants stranded in Otay mountainsThrough Thanksgiving weekend, San Diego Sector Border Patrol says agents found a body and rescued more than 20 people as inclement weather moved through the county. 1217
