(AP) — A Southern California police department says three middle school students have been arrested after attempting to free another student from custody.The Riverside Press-Enterprise reported Saturday that a 15-year-old Tahquitz High student arrived at Rancho Viejo Middle School Friday and argued with a school employee.Hemet police says the high school girl was arrested on suspicion of threatening a public employee after a campus police officer attempted to speak with her.Authorities say three other minors attempted to stop the officer from arresting the girl by blocking the patrol car door and trying to punch the officer.Authorities say the officer called for backup and the girl, two 13-year-old boys and a 14-year-old boy were arrested.School officials say the students should expect to face disciplinary action from the district. 869

(AP) — Sacramento State University has accidentally accepted 3,500 wait-listed students for fall admission.The Sacramento Bee reports that the students were mistakenly invited to Admitted Students Day after an email was sent in March welcoming them to the event.Officials say the school never rescinded the invitation, which implied the students were accepted.University officials say the error resulted in an additional 500 students who began classes this semester.Officials say there would be space to admit them, because the school initially admitted a conservative number of students and it noted a record number of graduates last year.Officials say they don't believe that the additional students would have an effect on students' ability to take classes in their department.University officials estimate a 1% enrollment increase. 862

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – New York Attorney General Letitia James announced Saturday that she will empanel a grand jury as part of her investigation into the death of Daniel Prude in Rochester.Activists have marched nightly in Rochester since police body camera videos of the encounter with the Black man visiting from Chicago were released this week by his family.“The Prude family and the Rochester community have been through great pain and anguish," James said in a statement. "My office will immediately move to empanel a grand jury as part of our exhaustive investigation into this matter.”Prude died of the effects suffocation after he was held by the police last spring.Seven police officers involved in the suffocation death of Prude have been suspended by the city’s mayor, who said she was misled for months about the circumstances of the fatal encounter.A union leader defended the officers Friday, saying they followed their training “step by step.”Prude died when he was taken off life support on March 30. Gavin Newsom.The law also bans disposing cigar and cigarette waste at parks and beaches. Violations of the law will be punishable by a fine of up to . Newsom, a Democrat, announced Friday he had signed the bill into law.It covers smoking traditional cigarettes as well as using electric smoking devices. Smoking will still be allowed in parking lots at beaches and parks. Film and television productions can still allow people to smoke on state property with the proper permits.Democratic state Sen. Steve Glazer has been pushing such a ban for years, with lawmakers approving it several times. But former Gov. Jerry Brown, a fellow Democrat, repeatedly vetoed it."We have many rules telling us what we can and can't do and these are wide open spaces," he wrote last year.Glazer has argued such a rule will protect public health and curtail pollution.California already prohibits smoking at child care centers, within 25 feet (7.6 meters) of farmers' markets, in government buildings and on public transportation.
