(CNS) -- A man who struck and seriously injured a bicyclist in Ramona last fall pleaded guilty Monday to felony charges of reckless driving resulting in serious injury and vandalism.Chase Edward Richard, 35, admitted hitting Michelle Scott from behind on state Route 67 near Dye Road with his Ford Edge last Oct. 2. Scott was struck around 6:15 a.m., and was airlifted to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido with serious injuries.She remained at the hospital for about two months before being transferred to a Poway nursing care facility, where she remains under full-time care, recovering from the brain injury she suffered in the crash, according to the Ramona Sentinel.Richard was arrested less than a week later. The California Highway Patrol said a tip from the public led investigators to Richard's damaged SUV in the garage of his Ramona residence.Richard agreed to a three-year, eight-month term that will include two years in local custody and 20 months of mandatory supervision.Per the terms of his plea agreement, Richard will also perform 200 hours of community service, a component of his sentence that Deputy District Attorney Valerie Ryan said was important to Scott's family.The victim volunteered with multiple local programs, including the local Community Emergency Response Team -- or CERT -- which trains and assists community members in response to emergency situations like natural disasters.Ryan said Scott's husband, Don, hopes that Richard can "do what he can to give back to the community because Mrs. Scott can no longer do that."The prosecutor said Don Scott is "hoping through this time on mandatory supervision that Mr. Richard can change and alter his behavior" and "contribute to the community" once he is released from custody."There's a lot of graciousness and generosity of heart in the Scott family, and they are hoping and looking for Mr. Richard to do better" Ryan said.Sentencing is slated for July 28. 1966

EL CAJON (KGTV) -- A motorcyclist who crashed into a parked truck on a residential street in Fletcher Hills has died, El Cajon police said Tuesday.Shortly after the crash, some off-duty nurses rushed to help the critically injured motorcyclist, identified Wednesday as 36-year-old Julian Garcia, allowing emergency crews to rush him to the hospital.Jennifer Lepari said she heard a “loud boom” on Valley Lake Drive near Valley Mill Road around 8:30 p.m. Monday. “It almost shook the house. It was really, really loud,” she said.Lepari and her husband Jerome are both nurses. Jerome quickly used his belt as a tourniquet on the rider’s leg to staunch the bleeding while Jennifer applied pressure and spoke with dispatchers, according to neighbors.“With the amount of blood he lost and the time it took [for emergency crews to arrive], even the cops said [the rider] wouldn’t have lasted if [Jerome] hadn’t done that,” Lepari said.El Cajon police say the motorcyclist struck a parked work truck on Valley Mill Road for unknown reasons. Investigators believe speed may have been a factor but the crash is still under investigation, Lt. Randy Soulard said.A third off-duty nurse who lives around the block also tended to the badly injured rider, neighbors said.“It was awesome to see the people with that sort of medical experience jump in and not hesitate,” said a neighbor named Lisa.Once police arrived, an officer applied a second tourniquet to the rider’s leg, Lt. EL CAJON (CNS) - A man and woman were sentenced Tuesday to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the 2017 shooting death of a man in a botched holdup in the parking lot of a Burlington Coat Factory store in La Mesa, in which they made off with cash and three pairs of shoes taken from the victim. Derrick Eli Henderson, 32, and Kathryn Luwana Williams, 26, were convicted in July of murder and robbery charges for the death of 30-year-old Travis Lewis, who was gunned down on July 20, 2017, outside the Burlington Coat Factory store at 7938 El Cajon Blvd. Jurors deliberated for about two days before convicting Henderson and Williams of the killing, and finding true a special circumstance allegation of committing the killing in the commission of a robbery. The defendants met up with Lewis under the guise of purchasing marijuana from him -- a scheme orchestrated by Williams, who called the victim to arrange the meeting and brought Henderson along as muscle, according to Deputy District Attorney Kristian Trocha. Williams then took shoes the victim had just bought out of the trunk of his car and rifled through Lewis' pockets and took cash as he lay bleeding in the parking lot, but left behind marijuana that he had in his vehicle, Trocha said. In his closing argument, Trocha told the jury that Williams was ``just as responsible as if she pulled the trigger herself.'' Co-defendant Tiesha Miller-Johnson, 34, pleaded guilty to robbery and is slated to be sentenced later this month. Prosecutors said she was the getaway driver. Henderson's attorney, Yahaira Aristy, denied that he was the shooter, while the prosecution claimed that Henderson's DNA was found on the gun and that he told someone else that he ``domed that dude'' when talking about the robbery. Mike Murphy was on patrol around 2 a.m. when he got a radio call reporting people in dark clothing tagging along Heart Drive."Saw three males with dark clothing. Hit them with a spotlight and told them to have a seat, which they all did," said Sgt. Murphy.Two other patrol officers were called to the scene. The three men in their late 20s had spray paint under their nails, with fresh paint on the sidewalk and the wall of a business. Sgt. Murphy decided to take a closer look."I saw messages, not of hate, but of peace and love ... the peace sign and 'BLM.' Just had a discussion. 'You're not trying to say anything mean or hateful. Why did you choose a wall?' I understand the frustration of everything going on. Talked about, if this happened to their house, would they be upset? They apologized, and all agreed the avenue they chose was a wrong one. And they came up with, 'What if we fix this?' I said, 'I'd like to help you with that,'" said Sgt. Murphy.Sgt.
