JAPATUL VALLEY, Calif. (CNS) - Firefighters labored for a sixth day Thursday to subdue a wildfire that has blackened thousands of acres in rural eastern San Diego County, leveling at least 30 homes and dozens of outbuildings and forcing widespread evacuations.As of midday Thursday, crews had the sprawling burn area southeast of Alpine nearly one-third contained, according to Cal Fire. The personnel remained particularly focused on its western and northern flanks, where smoldering hot spots were posing the most immediate remaining structural threats, the state agency reported.At last count, the conflagration, dubbed the Valley Fire, had destroyed 30 residences and 29 auxiliary structures and left two firefighters with minor injuries.The blaze erupted for unknown reasons early Saturday afternoon off Spirit Trail and Carveacre Road in Japatul Valley and spread rapidly through tinder-dry vegetation amid sweltering heat and high winds, according to Cal Fire. More than 1,000 local, state, federal and military firefighters battled the blaze by ground and aboard firefighting aircraft, officials said.As of late Thursday, crews had the perimeter of the wind-driven inferno 35% surrounded by fire breaks, the state agency reported. And there are -- downed power lines, gas leaks, unstable boulders and hot spots."Some roadways in and around the burn zone have been reopened to residents only, the lieutenant said."Please, folks, if you're not from the area, stay away," O'Boyle said. "It's not a time to be getting photographs. It's not a time to be flying drones. It's not a time to be getting video."Shelters for the displaced were available at Steele Canyon in Spring Valley, according to the San Diego Humane Society. El Capitan High in Lakeside closed later Thursday, CAL FIRE San Diego reported. Lakeside Rodeo Arena was available to shelter horses, and residents in need of a safe place to board pets or livestock until the wildfire was extinguished were advised to make use of one of two San Diego County Animal Services shelters, in Bonita and Spring Valley.Fire-related power outages kept about 794 addresses in the vicinity of the blaze without electrical service Thursday, and possibly for several more days, according to SDG&E.Due to smoke drifting over much of the county because of the blaze, the San Diego County Pollution Control District advised that air-quality levels were unhealthy in parts of the region and advised people to limit outdoor activities until conditions improve.As the Valley Fire spread, Gov. JAMUL, Calif. (KGTV) -- A man was arrested Tuesday morning after reportedly stabbing a San Diego County Sheriff’s Department K-9 and spraying deputies with bear spray. Deputies were called to the 15000 block of Skyline Truck Trail in Jamul around 10 a.m. Tuesday after receiving reports of a man walking around a vehicle talking to himself. When deputies arrived, they made contact with the man, identified as Richard Lechuga, 29, of San Diego, sitting in a vehicle. When deputies approached Lechuga, he reportedly sprayed three of them with bear spray through an open window. Deputies say Lechuga then brandished what appeared to be a knife and a handgun and stabbed a K-9 in the head and face. Deputies were able to take Lechuga into custody after using less-lethal shotgun rounds, pepper balls and a Taser. The K-9 was taken to a local veterinarian for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. The deputies were also treated on scene and Lechuga was taken to the hospital for treatment. Lechuga was arrested for felony assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, assaulting a police animal and resisting arrest. Jurors have found Border Patrol Agent Lonnie Swartz not guilty on the Second Degree Murder charge of shooting through the border fence and killing 16-year-old Jose Antonio Elena Rodriguez.Jurors could not come to an agreement on a verdict on the two lesser charges, voluntary manslaughter and involuntary manslaughter.If they wish, prosecutors can retry Swartz on the lesser charges only.Friday jurors told Federal Judge Raner Collins they could not agree on a verdict.  The judge told them to continue deliberating. They could choose to convict Swartz on lesser charges of Voluntary Manslaughter or Involuntary Manslaughter.Swartz testified he was protecting himself and other officers from rocks thrown over the border fence by people on the Mexican side trying to interfere with efforts to arrests smugglers who were trying to climb over the fence and into Mexico.In closing statements to the jury, prosecutors said in his two years as a Border Patrol Agent, Swartz had rocks thrown at him six or seven times, and each time had responded by using less lethal weapons. Border Patrol may use items like guns that shoot an irritating pepper.But the night of October 10, 2012, Swartz had been on duty at the DeConcini Port of Entry.  He had only his gun and used it to fire 16 rounds through the fence. Ten shots hit the 16-year-old Mexican teen.Prosecutors say the threat against Swartz and other officers was not severe enough to justify deadly force and that they could have easily removed any threat by taking cover.They say other agents took cover but Swartz was fed up with rockings, wanted to send a message, and did it by calmly walking to the border fence, taking careful aim, and firing 16 shots into Mexico.Defense attorney Sean Chapman told the jury rocks are enough of a danger to justify deadly force and that there is no evidence to conclude Swartz fired out of anger over rock attacks.
