BUFFALO, N.Y. — A protester who was knocked down by police in Buffalo earlier this month suffered a fractured skull and has been unable to walk, his attorney said Saturday.Kelly V. Zarcone says she was able to have a brief conversation with her client, 75-year-old Martin Gugino, before he said he needed to rest.According to Zarcone, Gugino is appreciative of those concerned about him, but he is still focused on social issues rather than himself.In a statement to CNN last Wednesday Zarcone said Gugino would be moved to a rehabilitation floor of the hospital and is expected to be released within two weeks.In an additional statement Thursday, Zarcone said Gugino is beginning physical therapy."As heartbreaking as it is, his brain is injured and he is well aware of that now," she said. (KGTV) -- A new study released this July says ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft are actually contributing to heavier traffic. The study, conducted by Schaller?Consulting, found that ride-sharing companies compete mainly with public transportation, walking and biking. So instead of taking a bus or train, customers use services that put more vehicles on the road.The study found that even services like UberPOOL and Lyft Shared Rides, while claiming to reduce traffic, still add mileage to city streets and do not offset the impacts of UberX and Lyft.The shared rides add to traffic because, according to the study, users are switching from non-auto modes of travel like biking.According to the data, the metropolitan areas of Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington D.C. are home to 70 percent of Uber and Lyft trips. It’s not all bad news though. The study also found that ride-share services can help provide support for seniors, people with low incomes and those with disabilities.In addition, the same companies show promise in providing subsidized connections to different forms of public transportation. 1229

BEAUMONT, Calif. (KGTV) -- San Diego County Fire-Rescue announced Saturday that it sent firefighters from the department to help battle the Apple Fire burning in Riverside County.According to the agency, crews left early Saturday morning to join the fight against the blaze.Strike team deployments usually last 14 days, but can be reduced or last longer, depending on the incident, the department said.“California has a very strong mutual aid system and it kicks into gear for wildfires to support fire agencies in our state and others,” the agency added.The North County Fire Protection District said later in the day it sent two units to battle the blaze. The Poway Firefighters Association also said it sent crews to assist with the Apple Fire. As of Sunday morning, the fire had scorched 15,000 acres and was 0% contained, according to KABC. One home has so far been destroyed with another 2,500 threatened. The Apple Fire began as two separate blazes in Cherry Valley Friday evening. BONITA, Calif. (KGTV) -- After more than two decades in business, Giant Pizza King in Bonita is closing its doors. For the last 23 years, the Stephan family has operated the restaurant at the location. Several months ago, they learned their landlord wouldn’t renew their lease, replacing the pizza shop with a Starbucks. “I cannot believe it anyways; my last day is just so hard because I’m here every day, seven days a week,” said Nisreen Stephan, whose customers call her Nancy. After she makes her last pizza, Nancy says she’ll take some much needed time off and always cherish the memories she made at the shop. Nancy says she isn’t sure if Giant Pizza King will reopen in another location. If she decides to reopen the restaurant, she says she’ll make sure to let everyone know. 792
