Vice President Mike Pence visited Wisconsin on Tuesday to make a campaign push ahead of election day in November. The VP had a pair of appearances in the morning which focused on issues important to local republican voters like religious faith and personal security. In an interview with TMJ4 News, Pence discussed Coronavirus testing and the Black Lives Matter movement."Well look, I'm pro life. I think that all lives matter and that the lives of our African American community are precious in the sight of God," the Vice President said.? While the Black Lives Matter protests in Milwaukee and around the country have been largely peaceful and about systemic change, Vice President Pence raised concerns about the rioting and looting with some protests.?"I think that the leadership of the movement calling for defunding police - seeing the countless violence in the street. It's just not where the American people are - the American people know we can support law enforcement and our African American community. ?The decades of disparities run deep in Milwaukee for African Americans in areas of income and home ownership," he said.Pence points to President Trump's record with the lowest unemployment rate ever for African Americans before the pandemic, increased funding for Historic Black Colleges and Universities and more tax break investments in communities of color called Opportunity Zones. ?The vice president believes failed Democratic leadership in major cities helped Donald Trump win Wisconsin in 2016. ?"They heard him (President Trump) say to the African American community in this state: 'What do you have to lose?' Because too often our African American families in our major cities live on the most unsafe streets, their kids go to the most failing schools they are not given a choice, they don't have the income.?"But The Democratic Party of Wisconsin says the Trump Administration has not delivered."From failing to provide adequate PPP loans to black-owned businesses, relentlessly attacking protections for people with pre-existing conditions, and creating an economy where the Black community isn't given the same opportunities to get ahead, Trump and Pence have proven that their toxic agenda isn't designed to work for Black Wisconsinites, " said party Vice Chair Felesia Martin.Democrats and the Joe Biden campaign have also pounced on President Trump's comments that he wanted to "slow down" coronavirus testing.TMJ4 asked Pence about those comments. "The president has made it clear very early on that we were to form a seamless partnership ship with governors around the country. At this point, I think we have done 27 million test across America," Pence responded.U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin thinks the Trump administration has not delivered enough testing supplies for hard hit places like nursing homes. The Wisconsin Democrat and potential V-P running mate for Joe Biden wants the president to use the Defense Production Act to increase testing supplies and improve access."We're facing lots of challenges as we struggle to reopen the economy," said Baldwin, and we will continue too as we open things like K--12 schools and higher education.Baldwin is also calling for work place protection rules and supplies. She says social distancing and hand washing are good guidelines but more is needed to protect front line workers for future Covid 19 surges or outbreaks."The idea that, this far into the pandemic, they've failed to issue any sort of mandatory, enforceable standards, is really, really outrageous."This story was originally reported by Charles Benson on tmj4.com. 3615

U.S. employers added a substantial 4.8 million jobs in June, and the unemployment rate fell to 11.1%, as the job market improved for a second straight month yet remained far short of regaining the colossal losses it suffered this spring. The nation has now recovered roughly one-third of the 22 million jobs it lost to the pandemic recession. The monthly job report coincided with the Department of Labor's weekly report on unemployment claims, which indicated that 1.4 million Americans filed initial claims for unemployment during the week ending June 27. That brings a 15-week total to about 47.9 million claims.Thursday's figures were down about 60,000 from last week's unemployment filings. It marked the fourth straight week where unemployment claims have hovered at about 1.5 million.Weekly claims for unemployment have been falling for about four straight months after peaking at about 6 million a week in late March. But weekly unemployment claims remain historically high.Prior to the pandemic, the record high for weekly unemployment claims came in 2006, when 665,000 people filed for unemployment. The Department of Labor has been tracking the statistics since 1967.Economists often use weekly unemployment claims as a reliable tool when predicting unemployment. However, some surveys indicate that initial weekly claims may be underestimating the amount of those unemployed. At least one survey from the Economic Policy Institute found that millions of Americans gave up trying to seek benefits or didn't even start the process due to states' overwhelmed and antiquated unemployment systems. The new figures also come weeks before increased unemployment benefits provided through the CARES Act are set to expire later this month. While unemployment remains historically high, the stock market has improved drastically in recent months. Markets closed their best Second Quarter in decades this week, as states' reopening efforts and significant progress on a potential vaccine buoyed investorsHowever, cases are spiking again in many parts of the country. Several states have chosen to pause and even walk back their efforts to reopen their economies, leading to fears that more shutdowns and more unemployment could be on the way. 2247
VENTURA COUNTY, Calif. – Authorities have released surveillance footage showing Naya Rivera before her disappearance and the 911 call that led to the search for the "Glee" star.Rivera is presumed dead after disappearing while boating with her 4-year-old son at Lake Piru in Southern California. The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office says Rivera rented a boat at the lake Wednesday afternoon and went for an excursion with her son. Thursday evening, officers released security camera footage of the two at the boat launch.Boaters tell authorities that they later found Rivera’s boat drifting in the northern portion of the lake with her son sleeping onboard. A woman called 911 and notified law enforcement of the situation."The emergency is: We have a missing person," an employee of the rental boat business said. "We found a little girl in one of the boats by herself, and the mom's nowhere to be found."The 911 caller initially said the boy was a girl, because of his long hair, KCBS reports.Rivera’s son told investigators that he and his mother had been swimming in the lake and he had gotten back on the boat, but his mom didn’t.Authorities say the child had a life vest on and an adult life vest was found on the boat. The child is healthy and with family.Since Rivera’s disappearance, authorities have been using helicopters, boat crews, divers and unmanned aerial vehicles to search the lake, but there’s been no sign of Rivera yet.Thursday evening, the sheriff’s office announced that the search for the actress has turned into a recovery mission and that she is presumed dead.“Investigators believe Rivera drowned in what appears to be a tragic accident,” the office wrote in a press release.Rivera is best known for her role as Santana on the Fox TV show “Glee.” She appeared in nearly every episode of the musical comedy drama since 2009. 1856
