She then took her 9 mm Smith & Wesson handgun to the Silicon Valley campus and shot three people she apparently didn't know, San Bruno police Chief Ed Barberini said.All this because Nasim Najafi Aghdam was upset with YouTube's practices and policies."We know she was upset with YouTube, and now we've determined that was the motive," Barberini said.Aghdam shot and wounded three people before killing herself. The University of San Diego's head men's basketball coach Lamont Smith was arrested Sunday in the Bay Area and is facing three domestic violence charges, according to public records released by the San Francisco Sheriff's Department.Allen Lamont Smith, 42, was arrested at Oakland International Airport prior to the USD basketball team's flight back to San Diego following a 64-61 win over the University of San Francisco in last night's regular season finale.Officers were dispatched to the team hotel near Union Square late last night on reports of a domestic violence disturbance.The victim told police she was intimately involved with Smith. She was taken to the hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries.USD released a statement to Scripps station KGTV in San Diego, stating "We are aware of the report of allegations related to Lamont Smith. We have very few details at the time, but we will be gathering information and will be commencing an investigation into the matter."Smith is facing three charges in San Francisco: domestic violence, assault with force likely to commit great bodily injury, and false imprisonment.A USD alum and former basketball player at the school, Smith is nearing the end of his third season as head coach of the Toreros.He is married and has two children, but the victim's relationship with Smith remains unclear.  1381

The skies started darkening over Lake Charles, Louisiana, on Wednesday, as Hurricane Laura trekked toward the state.People planning to hunker down at home raced to a local home supply store.“My wife didn't want to travel this time,” said resident Robert Deboest. “So, we decided to go head on and kind of stick it out.”That includes Adam Johnson, who was busy buying plywood to cover the windows of his home.“It was like a sheet,” he said.Johnson moved to the Lake Charles area several years ago from Colorado. Laura will be the first hurricane he experiences.“[The] duplex I live in was built in 2015, so it should be pretty secure,” Johnson said.Others, though, feel far less secure.“I was going to stay because I didn’t have nowhere to go,” said resident Yvonne Lancto.However, local officials made arrangements at the Burton Coliseum Complex in Lake Charles for anyone wanting to evacuate, with the National Guard and dozens of buses ready to carry evacuees out of the danger zone and to shelter.Just a few days before her 77th birthday, Lancto chose to flee the storm.“I feel more safer now (sic),” she said, shortly before boarding a bus, “Because I was gonna have to drive - I was scared.”What is scaring a lot of people in Lake Charles is not just the potential for Category 4 winds from Hurricane Laura, but massive storm surge, especially along the coast – which can easily swamp the first floor of a building.Paul and Wanda Bertrand said that is why they are getting out of their home in coastal Cameron Parish.“I’m ready to get back you know,” Paul Bertrand said. “I just left and I’m ready to get back already.”His wife, Wanda, said their lives were far more important and hopes that evacuating will only be temporary.“Hopefully, this will be over soon,” she said, “and we can get back home and everything will be like it was normal.”It’s a normalcy that Hurricane Laura will put to the test. 1917

The winds were so strong on July 26 in Redding, California, authorities say they uprooted trees, ripped roofs off houses and downed power lines.The fast-moving Carr Fire took three family members from Ed Bledsoe that day -- his wife and two great-grandchildren."The tornado was hovering over the house," Amanda Woodley, Bledsoe's granddaughter, told CNN. "It was just a tornado fire over the house."Bledsoe had left the house earlier to go to the doctor's office, and was on the phone with his family members as the flames closed in. They believed they were safe from the fire and knew nothing of the approaching hellscape that was like nothing any of them had ever seen before.He said his son drove toward the flames in the hope of rescuing his family members. "My son said the grass wasn't on fire, the trees were getting sucked up in the air and burning," Bledsoe told CNN. "He said when he opened his doors, the leaves hit him like somebody was slapping him. He said it was sucking his breath out, and he got back in his car and tried to get out."Bledsoe was on the phone with his wife and great-grandchildren until the very end."It sucked the roof off the house and the walls fell out and the roof went right down on them," he said.The Carr Fire, now the sixth most destructive fire in California history, has consumed 121,000 acres and killed six people.Dr. Craig Clements of San Jose State University's Fire Weather Research Laboratory said there have been few observed firenadoes of this magnitude before. He says the conditions have to be perfect for something like this to occur.Firenadoes are formed from a fire's intense heat, causing the air to heat up quickly and rise rapidly. That, combined with surface winds that are obviously quite strong, creates a vortex similar to a dust devil.Clements says aside from the potentially damaging winds, a firenado like this can even pull fire in different directions.At 3:27 p.m. that day, the National Weather service sent out a statement noting that "radar indicates strong rotation located within the intense fire activity of the Carr Fire." They warned of possible wind gusts up to 50 mph."The wind went from zero wind to 40 to 60 mph winds within 15 minutes," Justin Sanchez told CNN. He said his house was consumed by the firenado. "(There was) a loud disturbing deep growling noise as it spun around in a spiral. It seemed the outside was moving around so slowly, with two-foot sized pieces of debris floating in it."Sanchez says when he and his family were about a mile and a half from his home, they looked back and could see their neighborhood consumed by it. 2631

The Sarasota County, Florida School District confirms they are looking into a racially offensive promposal that was posted to social media. A spokesperson for the district confirms the Riverview High School senior posted a picture that they worry will be a disruptor to the school and student safety. The post made to Snapchat reads, "If I was Black I'd be picking cotton, but I'm white so I'm picking U 4 Prom?"The district tells us they have not concluded if the 18-year-old will be banned from prom as it's an ongoing investigation. Sarasota County Schools has released the following statement on the incident: 636
