ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) — A monitor lizard on the lam in North County has been captured, but experts say there is another one loose in the area.Friday evening, reptile expert Susan Nowicke captured the lizard, now named "Esco," in an Escondido pond, swimming for nearly an hour for the chance to secure the animal. Neighbors had previously spotted the lizard several times near the ponds off Waterhouse Glen for about a year."Esco" however, is three-feet-long while the one being sought was four-feet-long, according to Nowicke. So Nowicke says there is at least one more monitor lizard still roaming the area.RELATED: Dangerous 4-foot lizard roaming north San Diego neighborhoodMonitor lizards are considered dangerous, packing a "nasty bite" that can lead to significant injuries. If their muscular tails whip a child or animal, it can lead to severe bruising or welts. Nowicke believes "Esco" and the other lizard either escaped or were turned loose by their owners. She says as babies monitor lizards are small and manageable pets. But six months later, they grow exponentially in size and become very difficult to handle. Most of the monitor lizards at her museum and education center, EcoVivarium off South Juniper St. in Escondido, are captured strays or surrenders. "They're thinking, 'Oh, it's going to grow up and be my best friend. It's just like a dog.' No, it's not a dog, it's a wild animal," Nowicke said. The lizards can grow up to seven and a half feet long, though the one captured in Escondido was only about three feet long. While the lizards are larger than most wildlife living in neighborhoods, it's difficult to catch because it can hide in trees, ponds, and even storm drains.Nowicke has taken "Esco" into the EcoVivarium and has him under a 30-day quarantine. She hopes to find the other lizard soon, to end what she calls "Monitor Watch."The lizard isn't the first noteworthy creature to roam our neighborhoods in the last year. In March 2018, a monitor lizard named "Bubbles" vanished from a Spring Valley pet store. Bubbles was eventually found hiding in brush near the pet store. 2118

ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) - A North County woman says she was scammed at a gas station by a performance 'worthy of an Oscar.'"We pull in and my husbands about to pump in the gas," said Alice. An ordinary trip to fill up turned eventful last month at the Shell gas station on Santa Fe Drive. "I see a man pull up in a black SUV, brand new and shiny," said Alice. Alice says a man in his 30s got out of the GMC Yukon and approached them."He was in head-to-toe designer clothes," said Alice. In the backseat was a well-dressed woman and a little girl."He says, 'Excuse me, Sir. I'm here vacationing from Dubai with my family and my wallet was stolen,'" said Alice. The man asked for some money for gas and then took out a ring."Here, take my ring. It's worth 0. I have money and plenty of jewelry at home. I just need money for gas and food," said Alice.Alice told the man to keep the ring and then had her husband put in on a pump with their credit card."I believed their story ... I put myself in their shoes. I would be devastated, and I would want someone to help me," said Alice.Days later, she learned from her cousin in Los Angeles those strangers were scammers. "I was the 4th person she knew of personally that this happened to. I was duped," said Alice."Then this past Wednesday, Alice was back at the gas station and filling up, when she saw something familiar," said Alice. It was another new GMC Yukon. Inside was a different family. She saw them talking with a young man, before pulling out a ring. "I ran over put my hand in front of the guy and said, 'You should be ashamed of yourself. This is a scam!" said Alice. She learned the family had a similar story about vacationing from Dubai. The SUV sped off, leaving behind a woman hoping others don't fall victim."It makes me angry. It's the giving season and they take advantage of that. They're actors. They played their part perfectly. They're going to get an Oscars, and I handed them the award," said Alice.Alice believes both vehicles had out-of-state license plates. She says she contacted the sheriff's department but was told this incident would likely be defined as panhandling, which isn't a crime. 2184

Evidence of Russian meddling in the 2016 election is "now really incontrovertible," White House National Security Advisor H.R. McMaster said Saturday."As you can see with the FBI indictment, the evidence is now really incontrovertible and available in the public domain, whereas in the past it was difficult to attribute for a couple of reasons," McMaster said while speaking at the Munich Security Conference just a day after the Justice Department announced several indictments in special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference.  570

ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) — The victims of Friday's deadly bluff collapse in Encinitas were identified Saturday, as officials reopened the beach but cautioned that the area remained active. Speaking to the press, Encinitas Lifeguard Captain Larry Giles said the site around the collapse will remain taped off from the public as crews continue to assess the stability of the rock."From what we've learned this morning ... the area's still active. [Geotechnical consultant] is concerned about the areas to the side of the current failure failing," Giles said. "The failure is not affecting the structures up top. Geotech is assuring us that is not a factor."RELATED: Three dead, two injured in north San Diego County bluff collapseA 30-foot by 25-foot slab of rock came crashing down onto Grandview Beach at about 3 p.m. Friday, killing one person and injuring four others. Two of those injured in the collapse later died of their injuries. Two of the three victims were identified as 35-year-old Anne Clave and 65-year-old Julie Davis.Officials moved a nearby lifeguard tower next to the site of the collapse as a safety precaution, Giles said. The beach, though, would reopen to the public Saturday, Giles said.Lifeguards will be posted nearby throughout the weekend as well.SATURDAY PRESS CONFERENCE:Moments after the collapse, beachgoers and lifeguards began sifting through the rubble to save those caught in the rocks' path."The lifeguard was there, adjacent to the incident, felt it, heard it. It just happened to take place outside of his peripheral, as he was watching the water it happened behind him," Giles told reporters. "He immediately got out of the lifeguard tower, called it in, sized it up, started requesting resources and engaged in doing rescue work."Other lifeguards in the area filtered in quickly along with fire crews from around the area."INTERACTIVE MAP: Most recent San Diego County bluff collapsesLifeguards warn beachgoers about hazardous areas of the beach's bluffs, Giles added. Though, lifeguards can only warn visitors and not forcibly remove them from being too close. The city recommends beachgoers stay 25 to 40 feet away from bluffs and exercise caution due to the cliffs' natural instability."This is a naturally eroding coastline so it does happen from time to time. This is an isolated incident ... at this location," Giles said. "Our hearts go out to the families and friends that were involved."RELATED: Encinitas bluffs are a trouble spot known to geologists 2506
