SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- The San Diego Air & Space Museum held a celebration exactly fifty years to the day of Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins’ historic mission to the Moon a half century ago, the Museum announced today.Apollo 11 was the first time a human set foot on the Moon, one of mankind’s most incredible achievements. The San Diego Air & Space Museum celebrated their accomplishments with a special event held during their after hours on Saturday. The public was invited to explore the exhibits, hear from a specially organized panel and watched the launch the San Diego premier of “The Day We Walked on the Moon,” a special documentary from the Smithsonian Channel commemorating the Apollo 11 Moon landing.At the event, people were reminiscing on where they were during the historic moment 50 years ago. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) Sewage contaminated water is keeping swimmers out of the ocean in Imperial Beach. Late Tuesday afternoon, The County of San Diego Department of Environmental Health extended an existing water contact closure to include all of Imperial Beach. The original closure was issued on June 27th for the Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge shoreline. According to the county, sewage-contaminated runoff in the Tijuana River has been entering the Tijuana Estuary. Eric Syverson is a life long resident of Imperial Beach. He keeps a close eye on what's happening in the Tijuana River Valley. "It was dry on Saturday, not dry on Sunday. Monday, we wondered what was going on and now, Tuesday, there was quite a bit of flow this morning and it just smelled horrible and it’s green,” said Syverson. The water was pooling under the bridge on the north side of Dairy Mart Road. "At six a.m. this morning, probably double the volume that’s flowing right now and the air was twice as bad, you couldn’t breath under this bridge this morning," said Syverson. According to a San Diego inspector with the International Boundary and Water Commission, there was transboundary flow Monday night into Tuesday morning from a ruptured potable water line. The IBWC estimates 300,000 gallons of treated and untreated wastewater flowed into the U.S. Initially, the IBWC said the figure was much higher; roughly two million gallons. The number was revised after the inspector determined their gauging station was not accurately recording the flows. Members of Citizens Against Sewage are skeptical. "I’m looking at the gauge data from the river gauge from IBWC's information. We put values on those numbers that they provide, and it’s over seven milllion gallons,” said Lance Rodgers, Co-Founder of Citizens Against Sewage. This is just the latest in a series of sewage spills that have closed South County beaches."There were flows on the second, there were flows on the 30th, the 28th, 24, 23, 20, 19 it’s been a bad month,” said Syverson. Syverson said it's the same problem with no solutions from either side of the border. "I mean, why should we even have to think about it. It's July 9th, we should be at the beach right now, going "God, look at how gorgeous this area is," not standing in a horrible valley wondering how to solve a problem that’s existed for my entire lifetime," said Syverson. The county will continue taking water samples Wednesday morning, but it takes twenty-four hours to get back the results. 2522

SAN DIEGO COUNTY (CNS) - Seven "cool zones" are scheduled to open at noon Monday in San Diego County to provide relief from high temperatures.The cool zones are air-conditioned locations throughout the hottest areas of the county:-- Borrego Springs Library, 2580 Country Club Road;-- Fallbrook Community Center, 341 Heald Lane;-- Lakeside Community Center, 9841 Vine St.;-- Potrero Branch Library, 24883 Potrero Valley Road;-- Santa Ysabel Nature Center, 22135 CA-79;-- Spring Valley Community Center, 8735 Jamacha Blvd.; and-- Valley Center Branch Library, 29200 Cole Grade Road.All sites will be open from noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.COVID-19 safety measures will be in place. Anyone entering a cool zone will have their temperature taken and all visitors and staff must wear face coverings and practice social distancing.The libraries are cooling sites only; no library services are being offered.Animals, except service animals, are not permitted in cooling zones."Although we need to take steps to keep seniors safe, it still remains important to also keep them cool," said Supervisor Dianne Jacob. "Cool zones provide a refuge during the hot summer months, so it's helpful the county has developed a plan to get them open."The cool zones program is offered in partnership with the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency Aging & Independence Services and San Diego Gas & Electric Co. 1424

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) — Thirty-four people were arrested after Border Patrol agents intercepted two smuggling boats in less than 24 hours.The first boat was spotted around 11:15 a.m. on Sunday by a Department of Homeland Security aircraft. Less than an hour later, U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) Air and Marine Operations agents were able to stop the vessel about one-mile southeast of Point Loma.Twenty-one people were arrested, including four who are alleged smugglers — two of which are U.S. citizens. The remaining 17 people on board were Mexican nationals. CBP officials say they admitted to being in the U.S. illegally.RELATED:Marine accused of trying to smuggle immigrants through San Ysidro Port of EntryBorder Patrol rescues man abandoned by smugglers near US-Mexico border“Being out in very stormy water it's extremely dangerous,” said Border Patrol Agent Jarrett Decker. “If that boat would have capsized or anything like that, it would have been a more significant rescue.”According to Decker, none of the 21 people on board were wearing life vests.“It's always a rescue first,” he said. “So we always take our law enforcement hat off and put our humanitarian hat on.”At 12:02 a.m. on Dec. 2, a panga boat was spotted near Trestles Beach in San Clemente. Once the boat made it to shore, 14 people began running from Border Patrol agents. Thirteen people were captured, but one got away. Eleven of the arrested were Mexican nationals and two were Chinese Nationals. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Several trailers were set up at El Toyon Park in National City and will become a study site for a COVID-19 vaccine clinical trial, ran by UC San Diego.Drugmaker Johnson & Johnson is looking to enroll participants worldwide for phase three of its Janssen trial, including here in San Diego.UCSD will recruit the majority of the participants.The trial was scheduled to get underway on October 7th, but UCSD researchers now say they're looking at Friday as a start date."We hope to enroll about 2,000 people in San Diego, the study will be enrolling 60,000 people internationally," said Dr. Susan Little, a UCSD professor of medicine and principal investigator for the trial. "Eight Department of Defense trailers form the basis of our permanent vaccine site, vaccine clinic, in National City."Little said this will be a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study to determine the vaccine's safety and efficacy."Does it reduce the frequency of COVID infection overall or the severity of COVID infection among study participants?" she said.Little said there is already a lot of data available from the past."This is the same vaccine vector that has been used for many other infectious diseases like HIV, Zika, Ebola," she said.Although the trial is open to all San Diego County residents who qualify, she said the focus would be on recruiting residents from the South Bay, which is why the clinic was set up in National City, instead of UCSD's La Jolla or Hillcrest locations."Communities of color have been harder hit in the sense they have higher rates of hospitalization, and many of them have higher rates of death, our hope was by placing the vaccine trial in a community that has higher rates of infection we could reach a more highly impacted community," she explained. "Those are populations that we hope will have a greater potential benefit from this vaccine."After concerns were raised over another trial that was later put on hold, UCSD worked with the Chicano Federation to ensure South Bay residents get the information they need to make an informed decision if they want to participate."We are putting safety as paramount for these studies, no study is going forward unless we are confident about the safety of the vaccine," said Little.The Janssen trial will be the third for UCSD to join. The Moderna trial is currently underway, and the AstraZeneca trial is on a national pause. 2430
