SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KGTV) -- California will have the highest gas tax in the nation after an upcoming increase beginning July 1, according to figures by the Tax Foundation. Beginning July 1, California’s gas tax will increase by nearly six cents. Currently, the tax is 55.2 cents per gallon. When the additional tax kicks in, that figure will jump to more than 60 cents in taxes per gallon. Currently, the highest gas tax in the nation is in Pennsylvania at 58.7 cents. She's shooting!,'' referring to Lefler.Reilly told the jury that Lefler pointed her gun at everyone in Morales' apartment -- including her boyfriend, 11-year-old daughter and son -- before pulling the trigger."She (Lefler) did it on purpose,'' the prosecutor said. "In a moment of anger and fury, she shot through that front door. Ms. Lefler sent a message with a bullet through that front door. She can't do that!''Gray told the jury that Lefler called 911 multiple times that night, but police did not help her.Lefler was home alone, scared and outnumbered by her complaining neighbors, Gray said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 24-year-old woman who succumbed to some type of medical emergency -- possibly a drug overdose -- and became gravely ill after being arrested in University City last week died in a hospital today, authorities reported.Aleah Jenkins was pronounced dead at UCSD Medical Center nine days after being taken into custody, according to San Diego police.On the afternoon of Nov. 27, Jenkins was riding in a vehicle that was pulled over in the 3700 block of La Jolla Village Drive, Lt. Matt Dobbs said.After determining that she was the subject of an outstanding misdemeanor warrant for possession of methamphetamine, officers arrested Jenkins. While still at the scene of the traffic stop, Jenkins became ill and vomited."The officers called for paramedics, but (Jenkins) said she had only had an upset stomach, so medics were canceled," Dobbs said.Jenkins was then taken to downtown SDPD headquarters, where, while being processed for booking into county jail, she passed out, according to police."Officers immediately began lifesaving efforts and called for medical assistance," the lieutenant said.Paramedics took over the emergency aid and rushed Jenkins in for hospital care."During the course of the medical intervention, controlled substances were found concealed in (Jenkins') clothing," Dobbs said this afternoon."At this point, there is no indication any force was used on (her)."A cause-of-death ruling will remain on hold pending autopsy results.Police, however, believe that Jenkins may have suffered a drug overdose, according to Dobbs.The officers who conducted the traffic stop during which Jenkins was taken into custody have been identified as Nicholas Casciola and Jason Taub. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A former biologist at the San Diego Zoo was sentenced Wednesday to six months in federal prison for embezzling hundreds of thousands of dollars by cashing payments for false invoices he created.Matthew John Anderson, 50, of Ramona, pleaded guilty earlier this year to a theft charge for taking more than 6,000 from the zoo over the course of eight years. The U.S. Attorney's Office said that as a citizen of the United Kingdom, Anderson will likely face deportation once his sentence is completed.He has paid the full restitution amount back to the zoo, the U.S. Attorney's Office said."For years, this defendant took advantage of the trust of one of our city's most beloved institutions," said U.S. Attorney Robert Brewer. "His theft compromised the San Diego Zoo's world-renowned conservation work, made possible by government grants, charitable donations and the work of thousands of unpaid volunteers."Prosecutors said Anderson created dozens of fake invoices -- often using the name of fictitious vendors -- then submitted the invoices to the zoo for payment for products that were never purchased or received. Additionally, he submitted invoices for his personal expenses.The zoo sent payments to accounts he controlled or to other third parties, who sent the bulk of the payments to Anderson, prosecutors said.Anderson worked at the zoo for more than 17 years and served as the director of behavioral biology for the zoo's Institute for Conservation Research.
