The NCAA has announced Wednesday a series of major changes to college basketball in the hopes of eliminating corruption in the sport.The NCAA will now allow undergraduate students to participate in the NBA draft and return to school if they are not selected. Previously, players were allowed to attend the NBA combine but needed to withdraw 10 days prior to the draft in order to retain eligibility."Elite" high school prospects will now be permitted to be represented by an agent certified by the NCAA. According to CBS, USA Basketball will be tasked with choosing which prospects are considered "elite."The NCAA also announced major changes to the recruiting calendar, which the association hopes will allow recruits to attend more showcase events put on by high schools. Currently, apparel companies put on some of the most prestigious recruiting events.Finally, the NCAA will hold university presidents and chancellors personally accountable for their own athletics programs. The NAACP has filed a lawsuit against Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, claiming that he is attempting to "disenfranchise voters of color" amid the coronavirus pandemic.The lawsuit, filed Thursday in Washington, D.C. District Court, asks the court to declare DeJoy's recent operational changes as "invalid" and against the law as well prevent DeJoy from implementing further policy changes that were announced on July 10."As the country faces an uphill battle against COVID-19 and systemic racism, we're witnessing a significant onslaught against our postal system at a time when prompt mail delivery matters more than ever, especially for voters of color," Derrick Johnson, the President and CEO of the NAACP, said in a statement. "This willful and blatant attempt to obstruct the mail system amidst a pandemic and on the precipice of a pivotal election is a direct threat to the people of this nation's right to vote in a fair and free election."On Tuesday, DeJoy said in a statement that the USPS would pause the implementation of the proposed operational changes until after the November election. However, it's unclear if the agency would restore any mail sorting equipment that had been taken offline between the July 10 policy changes and Tuesday's statement.President Donald Trump has been staunchly opposed to universal mail-in voting, claiming that such policies would result in widespread voter fraud despite ample evidence to the contrary. The number of people sick from an outbreak of a gastrointestinal illness, called cyclosporiasis, linked to McDonald's salads is now 507, federal health officials said Thursday.All of the illnesses have been confirmed with lab tests. Twenty-four of those individuals have been hospitalized.The illnesses began between May 20 and July 21, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.Illnesses have been reported in 16 states. The states are Connecticut, Florida, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota, Tennessee, Virginia, Wisconsin and New York.The patients in Connecticut, New York, Tennessee and Virginia all purchased their salads while they were visiting Illinois and the Florida patient purchased the suspect salad while in Kentucky, according to the CDC."Epidemiologic evidence indicates that salads purchased from McDonald's restaurants are one likely source of these infections. The investigation is ongoing, and FDA is working to determine the sources of the ingredients that were in common to the salads served at McDonald's," the CDC said.The cyclospora parasite causes intestinal illness in people who consume contaminated food or water. Symptoms can begin a week or more after consuming the parasite. They include diarrhea and frequent, sometimes explosive, bowel movements, according to the CDC. Those who are infected might also experience loss of appetite, weight loss, stomach cramps or pain, nausea, gas and fatigue. Vomiting, headache, fever, body aches and flu-like symptoms can also occur.The illness can last from a few days to a few months, and patients might feel better but then get worse again. Patients can be treated with antibiotics.In July, McDonald's pulled the suspected salad mix from approximately 3,000 locations and switched its supplier.Subsequently, the outbreak investigation found the parasite in a sample of Fresh Express salad mix of romaine lettuce and carrots that had been distributed by the restaurant chain.On July 27, Fresh Express issued a recall for some lettuce that had been supplied to wholesale and institutional customers. 2167
