NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (KGTV) -- Thursday afternoon, police chased a suspect through San Diego County they say stole a vehicle from National City. During the pursuit, police used spikes, which shredded tires on the truck. After the truck came to a stop in Encanto, police could be seen shooting pepper balls into the truck. The suspect emerged from the vehicle a few moments later when a police K9 could be seen attacking the suspect before he was placed in handcuffs and taken into custody. Police say a Pit Bull was found in the back seat of the truck. At this time, authorities say it's unclear whether the dog belongs to the suspect or the person the truck was stolen from. 10News was live throughout the chase. More than 4 million Americans have tested positive for the coronavirus since the start of the pandemic, data from Johns Hopkins University indicated on Thursday.On Wednesday, more than 71,000 new coronavirus cases were reported, according to Johns Hopkins University data. The data also indicated nearly 1,200 coronavirus-related deaths were reported nationally on Wednesday.Despite having less than 5% of the world’s population, the United States represents 26% of all global coronavirus cases. Johns Hopkins University data also indicates that over 143,000 Americans have died from the virus, marking 22% of global coronavirus-delated fatalities.The rate of confirmed coronavirus cases has increased in recent weeks, fueled by both an increase in testing and a higher positivity rate in Sun Belt states.But the likely number of COVID-19 infections is likely higher, according to a study published in the journal JAMA earlier this week. Researchers believe the number of those infected could be anywhere from six to 24 times higher than what had been confirmed through testing early in the pandemic. Three out of 4 of those kids know where the firearms are kept in their house.The “End Family Fire” campaign released this week highlights the importance of safe gun storage in a home in order to keep children safe.Every day, 8 children and teens--ages 19 and under--are unintentionally shot by weapons that are found in the home.Hector Adames' nephew, Joshua, was one of them.“Joshua was shot in the stomach; [it] went through his stomach,” says Adames. “And unfortunately, when Joshua went down, he never got back up.”Kyleanne Hunter, with the Brady Center to Combat Gun Violence says it’s a tragedy that could be prevented by properly storing weapons.The nonprofit organization is the group behind the “End Family Fire” campaign. Most new moms can relate; after being stuck inside with a newborn for several weeks, getting outside for fresh air and a different view is important.Mei Xiang at the Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington, D.C. took her newborn panda cub outside the den recently and into the main enclosure.It was a short field trip for the pandas, with Mei Xiang gently nudging her cub along the floor and keeping them out of the smaller den space.These field trips will get longer and more frequent as the cub gains more strength.At eight-weeks-old, the cub is practicing crawling and is not expected to take steps until closer to three-months-old.Zookeepers say the cub is packing on the pounds and has grown a coat of thick, wooly fur, able to help it regulate its body temperature.
