OMAHA, Nebraska — Just before 5 p.m local time Monday, Omaha Police were called to the scene of a traffic incident involving a school bus near an intersection in North Omaha. Police later confirmed the boy, 8-year-old Haji Mohamed of Omaha, had died. According to a report from OPD received Monday night, "the investigation revealed that a Student Transportation of America school bus had come to a stop along Sprague Street just east of 22nd Street at a designated student drop off location."After several students disembarked the bus, the bus driver continued her route westbound on Sprague Street," the report states. "As the bus was traveling between 22nd Street and 23rd Street, an 8-year old male child who had just disembarked the bus, attempted to run across Sprague Street from north to south. As soon as the child entered the roadway, he was struck by the bus."The boy was transported by emergency personnel to Nebraska Medicine in extremely critical condition. Shortly after arriving at the hospital, the boy was pronounced dead, the OPD release states. Early OPD reports indicated the elementary-aged boy was transported with "extremely critical injuries" to Nebraska Medicine, said Sgt. Chuck Casey of the OPD incident unit, who gave an update near the scene. Omaha Public Schools later confirmed in a statement that the injured boy is a second-grader from Springville?Elementary School, located near 60th and Girard streets, about five miles northwest of the incident. The boy's family was with him at the hospital, Casey said.Early reports indicated the boy was struck by the front of the bus — the only vehicle involved in the incident — but the scene will be under investigation for some time, he said."At this time, Omaha Public Schools administrators, Student Transportation of America and OPS Student Transportation are cooperating with the Omaha Police Department as they investigate the incident," according to a statement from OPS early Monday evening. "Administrators are also supporting and working with the family of the student."Casey said initial reports were that the boy was a passenger on the bus. Other OPS students riding the bus were picked up by a second bus and taken to their destinations, he said.No other injuries were reported at the scene, he said.Watch KMTV station's livestream from the scene earlier today: 2458
OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV)- The freeway is back open in Oceanside after a big rig crash caused a major mess. It happened just after 10:30 a.m. on the southbound I-5 just north of Harbor Drive near Camp Pendleton. According to the CHP, the driver of a flatbed pulled off to the shoulder to check the equipment he was carrying. The driver of a big-rig hauling an excavator passed by and clipped the rear tire of the truck that was parked. The driver of the semi lost control, went down the embankment, hit a tree and flipped over. Remarkably, the driver is expected to be OK. "Very fortunate, judging the distance and the weight that we're looking at in these vehicles and the condition that the big rig is in that he sustained only minor injuries, " said CHP Officer Mark Latulippe. The big rig also caught on fire, but drivers stopped to help. "After the big rig had come to a stop on its side, a small fire had broken out. Some witnesses and passer-bys that had seen the crash actually stopped and put out the fire with some fire extinguishers," said Officer Latulippe. Clearing the wreckage was a long and complicated process."It's kind of a mess. There's a lot of pieces. It's entangled within a tree. The excavator is off the trailer, mostly off the trailer, the big rig truck tractor's portion of that is coming apart in pieces as we are trying to get it up," described Officer Latulippe. The number three and four lanes on the five south north of Harbor were shut down until around 530 pm. Traffic was backed up for miles. 1540
OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) -- In a 5-2 vote Tuesday night, the Tri-City Medical Center's board of directors voted to suspend, indefinitely, care in its inpatient behavioral health unit. The Tri-City Healthcare District has operated a Behavioral Health Unit (BHU) for a number of years and a Crisis Stabilization Unit (CSU) since 2016. The CSU is already closed. According to an administrative staff report, the BHU averages roughly 12 patients per day.The unit provides critical care to a vulnerable population those who are suicidal or suffering from severe mental illness, but the board says keeping it open without making the required building changes could put those patients at greater risk. Tuesday night the Tri-City Healthcare District cited changes in federal regulations as one of the main reasons they will need to suspend services. Those regulations require hospitals to remove all "ligature" risks from rooms - or features that patients could use to hang themselves. The board said that the hospital's "drop" ceilings do not meet the requirements. At least one estimate put the cost to replace the ceilings at million dollars.Upgrading the ceilings is one item on a list of costly projects, a spokesperson for Tri-City Medical Center told 10News. The overall renovation project will cost .5 million, which include updates to the HVAC system and making other upgrades to the facility to meet current ADA requirements. The board also says there's a shortage of psychiatrists and a budget shortfall in that ward of roughly million. The COO says the move protects the entire hospital from possibly having to close."That is a reason, that is one of the issues that we are facing, lack of psychiatric care for those patients," said Hospital COO Scott Livingstone. "The patients made our argument for us," said Livingstone referring to a patient recently saying she waited 48 hours to be seen.Livingstone went on to say, "You're concerned about a 45 minute drive for a mental health crisis, try a 45 minute drive if you're actively having a stroke and your brain is dying."As the energy in the room grew tense, the board reminded the public that suspending the unit gives the hospital the option to re-open it if a solution is found. The suspension, which could last up to one year, means that any North County residents or "5150 transports" will be sent to hospitals much farther away. Police and sheriff's deputies say the added time it will take to transport "5150 transports" - or psychiatric patients - to Palomar Hospital in Escondido or San Diego County Mental Health will impact every neighborhood. "With the closure of your facility that will increase probably three to five hours, that's an officer off the street in your city- do you want that?" said La Mesa Police Captain Ray Sweeney.Captain Sweeny told the board roughly one in five adults experiences mental illness each year.A man who battles severe mental illness told the board that the psych unit at Tri-City has saved him countless times. "When I get to the hospital everything changes," he said. "From the moment the first nurse touches my arm, I feel like I'm being touched by an angel." Some doctors spoke in favor of the move; saying the entire staff supports the decision to suspend the psych ward, but increase outpatient services. The unit is scheduled to close on October 2, 2018. 3558
On what was a normal day for us a day of fun and playing, a day meant for good, you chose to commit a horrific violent act, an act intended for harm and act intended to kill and destroy. Thankfully our family serves a mighty God who is faithful to his people, a God who intends to protect and save. A God who’s will is perfect and makes all things work for the good of those that love him. You intended evil that day but God works all for good. Landen, who was a nameless child to you, is not a name forgotten or unknown to God. Landen is a witness to God’s divine interaction in our lives for all the world to see. Our boy was saved that day in a miraculous way as testimony to the goodness and greatness of God, and because of that miracle God is being glorified and His name is being magnified through out the earth. Your act was evil and selfish, you chose to listen to the worst parts of yourself that day. You chose evil over good and chose to take your hate and hurt out on my precious boy. That is where your impact on us stops, you will take nothing more from us. We will continue to Love and serve our God, we will continue to love people and have joy and peace in our lives, you will not define our lives or our hearts. We will live our lives to the fullest filled with fun and joy. You chose to waste your life and I wish you could experience the pain and suffering you inflicted on my boy, you should have the maximum punishment that this life has for you so you understand the impact of your actions. I do want you to know that I forgive you, because it is what God calls me to do, and holding hate only harms me and I will not allow that, and while I want the maximum punishment for you in this life I do want you to know that there is a God who does love you and seeks to save you. John 3:16 'For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son that who ever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.' This is the grace that our merciful, loving, and forgiving God offers you. This is the path to eternal redemption for you bought and paid for by the blood of Jesus, and he is greater than any evil you have committed I pray you call on his name so that you will be saved. The boy's mother also had a statement. Read it below: 2274
