More than 20 states have set records in daily reported cases of COVID-19 in recent days, prompting concern that another surge in deaths and hospitalizations linked to the virus could be on the way.According to information from Johns Hopkins University, 22 states across the country — particularly in the Upper Midwest or Great Plains region — are seeing record increases in new COVID-19 cases. Among the states seeing the most dramatic spikes are Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota.The cases in the upper Midwest may have been fueled by the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, which took place in South Dakota between Aug. 7 and Aug. 16. At least one report has estimated that the rally may have led to the infection of more than 250,000 people.Since the day the rally began, the number of new cases in South Dakota has risen from about 90 a day to more than 700 a day, and deaths increased from about one a day to about 10 a day. It's an exponential rise that's been mirrored in North Dakota and surrounding states.The spike in cases in the Plains and the Midwest has fueled a new surge in case counts across the country. High School teen Jayson Goetz was the talk of his high school's prom after he showed up in green and gold Green Bay Packers suit covered with Packers logos and topped off with bright yellow pants and a Packers bow tie. Goetz, a Mosinee High School junior, said he and his friends didn't want to put on the typical, stuffy black tuxedo and blend into the background of prom. After all those donations, the 81-year-old Australian man "retired" Friday. The occasion marked the end of a monumental chapter.According to the Australian Red Cross Blood Service, he has helped saved the lives of more than 2.4 million Australian babies.First, a note about antibodiesHarrison's blood has unique, disease-fighting antibodies that have been used to develop an injection called Anti-D, which helps fight against rhesus disease.This disease is a condition where a pregnant woman's blood actually starts attacking her unborn baby's blood cells. In the worst cases, it can result in brain damage, or death, for the babies.Here's why:The condition develops when a pregnant woman has rhesus-negative blood (RhD negative) and the baby in her womb has rhesus-positive blood (RhD positive), inherited from its father.If the mother has been sensitized to rhesus-positive blood, usually during a previous pregnancy with an rhesus-positive baby, she may produce antibodies that destroy the baby's "foreign" blood cells. That could be deadly for the baby.How Harrison made a differenceHarrison's remarkable gift of giving started when he had major chest surgery when he was just 14, the Australian Red Cross Blood Service said.Blood donations saved his life, so he pledged to become a blood donor.A few years later, doctors discovered his blood contained the antibody which could be used to create Anti-D injections, so he switched over to making blood plasma donations to help as many people as possible.Doctors aren't exactly sure why Harrison has this rare blood type, but they think it might be from the transfusions he received when he was 14, after his surgery. He's one of no more than 50 people in Australia known to have the antibodies, the blood service says."Every bag of blood is precious, but James' blood is particularly extraordinary. His blood is actually used to make a life-saving medication, given to moms whose blood is at risk of attacking their unborn babies. Every batch of Anti-D that has ever been made in Australia has come from James' blood." Falkenmire said. "And more than 17% of women in Australia are at risk, so James has helped save a lot of lives."Why his donations were a game changerAnti-D, produced with Harrison's antibodies, prevents women with rhesus-negative blood from developing RhD antibodies during pregnancy. More than three million does of Anti-D have been issued to Australian mothers with negative blood types since 1967.Even Harrison's own daughter was given the Anti-D vaccine."That resulted in my second grandson being born healthy," Harrison said. "And that makes you feel good yourself that you saved a life there, and you saved many more and that's great.The discovery of Harrison's antibodies was an absolute game changer, Australian officials said."In Australia, up until about 1967, there were literally thousands of babies dying each year, doctors didn't know why, and it was awful. Women were having numerous miscarriages and babies were being born with brain damage," Jemma Falkenmire, of the Australian Red Cross Blood Service, told CNN in 2015. Millions of women and girls globally have lost access to contraceptives and abortion services because of the coronavirus pandemic. Now the first widespread measure of the toll says India with its abrupt, months-long lockdown has been hit especially hard.Several months into the pandemic, many women now have second-trimester pregnancies because they could not find care in time.Across 37 countries, nearly 2 million fewer women received services between January and June than in the same period last year, Marie Stopes International says in a new report — 1.3 million in India alone. The organization expects 900,000 unintended pregnancies worldwide as a result, along with 1.5 million unsafe abortions and more than 3,000 maternal deaths.Those numbers “will likely be greatly amplified” if services falter elsewhere in Latin America, Africa and Asia, Marie Stopes’ director of global evidence, Kathryn Church, has said.The World Health Organization this month said two-thirds of 103 countries surveyed between mid-May and early July reported disruptions to family planning and contraception services. The U.N. Population Fund warns of up to 7 million unintended pregnancies worldwide.Lockdowns, travel restrictions, supply chain disruptions, the massive shift of health resources to combat COVID-19 and fear of infection continue to prevent many women and girls from care.A surge in teen pregnancies was reported in Kenya, while some young women in Nairobi’s Kibera slum resorted to using broken glass, sticks and pens to try to abort pregnancies, said Diana Kihima with the Women Promotion Center. Calls have increased to their hotlines, including those launched since the pandemic began in Congo, Zambia and Cameroon. More than 20,000 women have called since January.Like others, Moreka predicts a coming baby boom in some parts of the world. “The pandemic ... has taken us many years backwards” in family planning services, she said.Some countries didn’t deem sexual and reproductive health services as essential under lockdown, meaning women and girls were turned away. Even after NGOs in Romania pressured the government to declare the services essential, many hospitals still weren’t providing abortions, said Daniela Draghici, a member of the IPPF European network’s executive committee.“The impact in some cases is like what used to happen to young women during Communism, to get an abortion from somebody who claims to be a medical provider ... and pray,” she said.In India’s megacity of Mumbai, one woman was unable to find a pregnancy testing kit after the lockdown started in March, and then couldn’t find transport to reach care in time, said Dr. Shewetangi Shinde, who attended to her in a public hospital.
