SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - More than a hundred family and friends gathered for a memorial service Friday morning at St. Therese Catholic Church in Del Cerro, to remember Julia Jacobson.The retired U.S. Army Captain disappeared over Labor Day weekend and is believed to have been murdered, the priest talking of the "sting of death" and "death so sinful."Julia's car was discovered abandoned near her home in University Heights but there's been no sign of her or her dog, Boogie, despite many searches - which are ongoing.RELATED: Ex-husband of missing Army veteran arrested on suspicion of murderJulia was divorced. It wasn't a friendly parting and the ex-husband, Dalen Ware, was arrested in Phoenix last month; charged with her murder and currently awaiting trial.Friday, though, a tearful farewell for a lost friend.Jamie Mann described her as a battle buddy during the Iraq war."There isn't a day goes by I don't think of that girl and how she made me a better leader; just a better woman; and she loved everybody, touched so many people hearts, and she'll never be forgotten," Mann said.RELATED: Scholarship set up in memory of missing Army veteran Julia JacobsonJulia's brother, Jon, said one of his biggest honors was to pin Julia's lieutenant's bars on her."I was very proud of her; her service in Iraq, Serbia a little while. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - On Tuesday the North San Diego Business Chamber honored first responders who've gone above and beyond in their duties protecting the community. One of the recipients was San Diego Police Department K9 Officer Jonathan Wiese, honored for his actions during the active shooter incident at the Chabad of Poway synagogue.Wiese was on his way to meet his family for lunch when he heard the shots fired call and immediately responded to the area.Despite having little information and no back-up, Officer Wiese was able to track the suspect down who then surrendered. "Active shooter is right up there with 'officer down'; the calls don't get more intense than that, when you know someone is actively shooting there's going to be multiple victims, there's going to be a large scene, it's going to be chaotic," said Wiese. Officer Wiese says his 20 years of training kicked in."I tried not to think about the danger, just tried to figure out what I needed to do," said Wiese. "Every single day we have great stories like this, and so I want the public to know this is not unusual, this is our normal," said Chief Craig Carter with the Escondido Police Department. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — New data released by the San Diego County Office of Education show three-fourths of all K-12 students in the County are now studying online and experts believe that number will increase by the start of the new year.Poway parent, Caroline Epps, told her three children recently that they would be going back to virtual learning."I could tell they were disappointed," Epps said. "It's been nice having them there even though it's been such a short time. It's going to be a little difficult having them at home the whole day again."Poway Unified is one of the few school districts that are still offering modified in-person instruction, only to elementary students. But earlier this week, the district announced they would be recommending all students to revert to distance learning after winter break."My oldest will have the most difficult time with that because her assignments are more complex," Epps said.The decision comes after another surge in COVID-19 cases. Bob Mueller with the County Office of Education says 75% of K-12 students are now learning remotely, up from 68% last month."We are seeing the impact of gatherings for Thanksgiving," Mueller said. "It's likely that we will see the surge deepen for a time as we feel the impact of gatherings for the December holidays."School staff getting sick or having to quarantine are resulting in a serious staffing shortage."We are seeing unprecedented demand for substitutes," Mueller said. We need more people to work in those roles than we've ever needed before."Epps says while it is not ideal, she understands the situation. So she and her children will have to adapt and overcome."I don't think anyone wants the school year to be the way it has been," Epps said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are searching for a man they say shot someone outside a liquor store in San Diego’s Mountain View neighborhood Saturday night.According to police, the incident happened on the 3700 block of Ocean View Boulevard at 10:10 p.m.Police say the suspect approached the 45-year-old man while at the liquor store and started an argument. During the argument, the suspect pulled out a gun and shot the 45-year-old before walking away.The victim was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries by his mother.
