SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Locals will no longer have to rely on trips to Harrah's Resort or Downtown Disney to satisfy their Earl of Sandwich fix.The sandwich shop's downtown San Diego spot, the county's first, is now open for hungry locals but will hold its grand opening Saturday, according to the shop. The new sandwich shop can be found at 690 1st Ave.A cult following has developed behind Earl of Sandwich, with its popular sandwiches like The Full Montagu (roast beef and turkey), The Original 1762 (roast beef and cheddar), and Holiday Turkey (turkey, cranberry sauce, and stuffing) sandwiches.RELATED: Michelin identifies several San Diego restaurants as 'hidden gems'The restaurant chain is named after John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich. Montagu has long been considered the inventor of the modern sandwich, ever since he is said to have requested the dish while putting in some long hours at the gambling table. But guests are locked into sandwiches at the stop. Earl of Sandwich also sells a variety of freshly tossed salads, wraps, desserts, and several on-the-go items. The shop is open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday - Friday, and opens at 10 a.m. on Saturdays. 1177

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - In celebration of Dr. Seuss's birthday, and as part of "America Reads," the United Way of San Diego is holding a week-long book drive across San Diego County."Reading to children is the utmost important thing a parent can do," says United Way CEO Nancy Sasaki. The United Way will accept book donations at their office, and also at any SDCCU branch location across the county. They're also teaming up with Warwick's Book Store in La Jolla for donations. The need is most significant among low-income families. The United Way says 61% of low-income families in San Diego don't have any books in their homes for kids. That puts them at a significant disadvantage."If a kid is not at a 3rd-grade reading level by the end of third grade, we know they're four times more likely not to graduate high school on time," says Sasaki. "And if they come from low-income communities, they're six times more likely to fall behind."Studies show that reading to children as few as three times each week helps promote vocabulary and reading proficiency."In many family settings where the parents are working 2 or 3 jobs, and they're crossing paths in the night, and they're barely able to get the food on the table, reading is not so easy to do," Sasaki says. "So just having books in the household is an important part."The United Way is also hosting a series of reading events this week. For more information about those, click here. 1443

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Just as he begins his campaign to become San Diego's next mayor, Assemblymember Todd Gloria was fined for violating the Political Reform Act.According to the California Fair Political Practice Commission, Gloria, "failed to timely file a Candidate Intention Statement prior to receiving contributions to his candidate-controlled committee, Todd Gloria for Assembly 2020."The FPPC fined Gloria 0. They say Gloria paid that fine.RELATED: Poll: Gloria pulls early lead in San Diego mayoral raceSan Diego, at last, has Republican candidate for mayorSan Diego's top Democratic mayoral candidates square off in debateAccording to the California Secretary of State's website, before raising any campaign funds, state candidates file "Statements of Intention" to run for a specific office. Candidates can file Statements of Intention for more than one office.Gloria's signed statement of intention shows the state received it on Aug. 13, 2019. That's after the campaign committee was opened and filed a "Recipient Committee Campaign" statement. In August, officials with the California Fair Political Practices Commission told 10News Gloria called FPPC Enforcement and self-reported.A spokesman for Gloria said they look forward to the final resolution of the matter: "Assemblymember Gloria agreed to this settlement to resolve any and all outstanding issues regarding the filing of his Form 501."Earlier this week, Gloria tweeted he officially pulled nomination papers to run for Mayor of San Diego in 2020, writing, "I'm ready. Let's do this." 1566

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Local groups including the Local Initiatives Support Corporation, are pushing for the City of San Diego to draft up and pass an ordinance that excludes certain zoning policies. "We're not asking to spend billions of dollars and build something, we're saying change the zoning. They have the prerogative, it's under their jurisdiction, we're reminding them there are issues at stake and those issues are communities to this day that are segregated," said Ricardo Flores, executive director of LISC.Flores says the same areas that were identified back in 1930 by San Diego banks as low-income areas are still falling under that category today. Additionally, areas outside of those remain zoned for single-family homes, keeping the lower income families from moving in. "So, what we’re effectively saying is, if you can't buy a single-family home in Kensington, then you can't live in Kensington. But, that’s not the truth; the truth is Kensington is zoned one thing, single family, and we need to expand that zoning." A representative at the rally from Chicano Federation says, "We are tired of the continuation of policies masked as zoning when in reality they are policies of segregation." Meantime, Borre Winkle, CEO and president of the Building Industry Association of San Diego told 10News, "The American dream is not to live in an apartment, the American dream is still to live in a single-family dwelling unit no matter how big it is".Winkle says getting rid of single family zoning isn't the solution. "For us, were totally on board with having multi family in a single-family zone, but we think it's going to run into a lot of neighborhood opposition." 1688

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Inside an MCAS Miramar courtroom Thursday, the military held a preliminary hearing for a Navy corpsman who's charged in connection with the death of a fellow Navy corpsman, HM3 Michael Vincent De Leon. A corpsman is a type of medic.ABC 10News' cameras were not allowed inside, where accused corpsman HM1 Ryan Dini appeared in his military fatigues alongside his private counsel."A cover-up is what I felt [happened] from the get-go," Jose De Leon told ABC 10News just after the hearing. He has suspected a possible cover-up since his 30-year-old son died on the Twentynine Palms military base last year.At Thursday's hearing, the prosecution argued that HM1 Dini should face additional charges related to negligence. He's already charged in part with dereliction of duty resulting in death and drunk and disorderly conduct. HM1 Dini has 19 years of service with the military. The prosecution stated that HM1 Dini and a handful of others service members including Michael were at a house party on-base where alcohol was flowing, and guns were being dry-fired the night of the death.HM1 Dini's defense denied any wrongdoing."[HM1 Dini] being the most senior individual at this going-away party failed to protect not just Michael but everyone there because they were in danger when these firearms came out," said Jose De Leon. He told us in September, "We know that the firearm was dry-fired at Michael. The firearm was put away and it came out again and according to some statements they were horsing around, and the firearm came out again and that's when Michael was killed."He said that the shooting was first called in as a suicide but ABC 10News then learned from a source with close military ties that the death was being investigated as a homicide.A prosecutor named three other service members in the hearing. Their involvement remains unknown. The prosecution told ABC 10News that in about three weeks a judge will determine whether HM1 Dini's charges will be sustained and whether he'll face additional charges.Naval Criminal Investigative Service wrote to ABC 10News on Thursday that the investigation is still open. 2149
