SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As the Timken Museum of Art remains shuttered due to coronavirus-related restrictions, museum officials say they're preparing for whatever a post-pandemic reopening will require.The museum said this week that it plans to install military-grade anti-viral technologies, which will reportedly clean the air of harmful pathogens at a level higher than that of hospital operating rooms."The Timken and Putnam families, innovators themselves, created our free museum in 1965 as a result of their successes in technology and engineering," says museum Chairman of the Board Jessie Knight, Jr. "We are honored to carry on that tradition by being the first museum in the world to bring cutting edge, military grade technology into practical, everyday use."RELATED: In-Depth: Balboa Park's future unfolds during COVID-19 pandemicThe Balboa Park museum had originally planned to incorporate an ultraviolet technology into its existing HVAC system that would eliminate 10% to 20% of airborne pathogens. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Caltrans maintenance crews closed the westbound Interstate 8 connector to northbound state Route 67 at 9 p.m. Thursday night, but lanes were reopened at 5 a.m. Friday morning. The closure took effect for guardrail repair, according to Caltrans.Signs were posted to direct motorists on westbound I-8 to exit at West Main Street and turn left to eastbound I-8 to SR-67.Motorists were reminded to be work zone alert and slow down when approaching Caltrans vehicles with amber flashing lights.Caltrans says Californians can expect more roadway improvement projects like this made possible by the recently passed Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017, Senate Bill 1.  715

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Children in San Diego could soon go without food if the federal government doesn't extend waivers put in place during the COVID-19 pandemic. The San Diego Unified School District is warning about that possibility after the U.S. Department of Agriculture ended supplemental food support for local families. The changes are expected at the end of September. The USDA decided they would end the supplemental support during the pandemic. After Sept. 30, families will be required to verify identification, proof of school attendance and eligibility to quality for the free family meals. These things were waived in March because of the pandemic. SD Unified officials say the USDA hasn't responded to their request to extend the waivers. District officials are taking steps to try and fill in the gaps by working with partners like the San Diego Food Bank and Feeding San Diego. The district also announced triple the distribution sites, up from 28 to 82. Students or their parents/guardians who qualify for subsidized meals can drive through or walk up to receive breakfast and lunch, Monday through Friday, from noon to 2 p.m. during the 2020-21 school year, which begins on Aug. 31.The district is also offering assistance to any family that needs help completing the required forms. The district says they have distributed more than 4 million meals to students since March. They say these meals are often the only quality meal they receive. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Chief Edward Gallagher has retired weeks after it was determined his rank would remain intact, an attorney confirmed. In late November, Gallagher and three other SEALs were notified that a board of peers would determine whether or not they should remain SEALs, the Associated Press reported. President Donald Trump then ordered the Navy to allow Gallagher to retire as a SEAL with his rank intact.
