ENCINITAS, Calif., (KGTV)— It has been almost three weeks since a fire destroyed several small shops in Encinitas. One of the business owners who lost it all is now getting a lot of support from his local community. In a blink of an eye, Greg Cali's life work was destroyed."One thing's for sure, it's been the most stressful period of my life," Cali said. His gallery was called "The Cali Life." It featured works by Cali and several other local artists. The blaze on September 30, 2019, burned it all to the ground. All except for one thing."The sign up over the building was the only thing I got," Cali said.That sign now has a new home inside of Pandora's Pizza restaurant."Art and pizza. Those are two of my favorite things on earth," he laughed. Two days before the fire, Cali sent out invitations to his gallery's one-year anniversary party. But with no gallery and no salvageable artwork, it was going to be canceled. That was, until Craig Leslie, Pandora's Pizza owner, reached out. Some of Cali's artwork was already hanging inside Pandora's Pizza, so Leslie offered to host the gallery party at the restaurant, located just two blocks away. "We're here to support him," Leslie said. "We're here to support other artists in the community. Let us know what you need, and I mean, we have a lot of walls!"Cali spent the last three weeks printing his collection, getting new pieces and organizing a silent auction. Instead of drowning himself in sorrow, he said his community is showering him with hope. Leslie even told Cali that he could use his upstairs loft as his gallery until he gets back on his feet. "My future, it looks really bright," Cali said. "There are ups and downs for sure, but I am 100 percent sure that you can turn bad things into positives. Experts say the finalization of a COVID-19 vaccine is in our near future. Dr. William Moss is a professor of epidemiology and the executive director of the International Vaccine Access Center at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.“Remarkable progress has been made in the development of COVID-19 vaccines,” Dr. William Moss said.He says it typically takes five to 10 years to develop a vaccine, but with so much money and attention going toward COVID-19, he believes it’s likely we’ll have a vaccine by the end of the year.“I’m pretty confident that there will be a vaccine that will have an emergency-use authorization in the United States by the end of 2020,” Dr. Moss said.According to Dr. Moss, of the dozens if not hundreds of vaccine candidates in clinical trials, there are three vaccine candidates that have reached phase three. Phase three is when tens of thousands of volunteers test the vaccine to make sure it’s safe and effective.As of this week, we have optimistic news regarding phase-three efficacy results from biopharmaceutical company Pfizer – which has been collaborating with German company BioNTech.“Early preliminary results suggests that their vaccine is 90% or so effective in preventing mild to moderate or severe disease.”If the 90% efficacy data holds up after follow ups from participants in late November, Dr. Moss says he expects the FDA will rigorously review the data and approve the vaccine for distribution. That means health care workers and other high-priority groups would get the vaccine in December of this year, or early next year.“Pfizer says that they could have close to 50 million doses by the end of this year," Dr. Moss said. "Now remember their vaccine – as a number of the vaccine candidates do – requires two doses per individual. So, 50 million doses allows you to vaccinate about 25 million people.”Dr. Moss says the unprecedented investment in vaccine manufacturing will make it possible for the vaccine to be distributed so quickly. However, there are still quite a few logistical challenges since he says the Pfizer vaccine requires extreme cold temperatures as low as minus 117 degrees Fahrenheit.“So we need warehouses to store the vaccine that have freezers that can maintain that cold, we need transportation systems – planes, trucks – that can deliver the vaccine and keep it cold. And then at the site of distribution, we need to be able to keep these vaccines cold.”Therefore, he says it will likely take a lot longer for the general population to get the vaccine. He’s guessing not until the middle of 2021. Of course, the idea of saving lives with the help of a vaccine is very promising, but he says the greatest misconception is that we can go back to "normal" as soon as it’s distributed.“That by no means is going to indicate that we can go back to our pre-pandemic life," Dr. Moss said. ENCINITAS (CNS) - At least one person was killed in a three-vehicle crash on the northbound San Diego (5) Freeway in Encinitas Saturday morning that left one of the vehicles completely destroyed.The crash was reported near Manchester Avenue at 2:35 a.m. and involved a Toyota Corolla, a Cadillac Escalade and a third dark-colored vehicle that was completely destroyed, according to the California Highway Patrol.Details of what led up to the crash were not available.All northbound lanes of the freeway just south of Manchester Avenue were closed until further notice. 576

In the video, a U-Haul van can be seen accelerating onto a sidewalk. Video shows pedestrians leaping out of the way before the vehicle crashes into the crowd. In a Monday news release, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department said one person is in an intensive care unit while another is undergoing surgery with serious injuries following the crash. The department says a 24-year-old victim is in an intensive care unit while a 25-year-old is in surgery with serious injuries. All three of the victims were struck when the suspect, Christian Davis, 28, reportedly drove the van onto a sidewalk outside The Saloon Bar around 1:30 a.m. Sunday. Two others received minor injuries when they detained Davis outside the bar. Deputies say Davis was asked to leave the bar because he was too intoxicated. After complying with the request, deputies say Davis got into the van, intentionally driving it onto the sidewalk. Davis was later arrested and is being charged with three counts of attempted murder and one count of attempted escape with force. Davis is scheduled to be arraigned in Vista on March 3. (KGTV) - A California Highway Patrol motorcycle officer was killed Friday in a crash involving a truck in the San Francisco suburb of Fairfield.He was identified as Solano-area officer Kirk Griess, KGO reported.Officer Griess was thrown from the motorcycle over a guardrail on Interstate 80 at North Texas St.Law enforcement officers gathered at Northbay Regional Medical Center in Fairfield to pay their respects to the officer. 455
