We get respect when we drive a pink Cadillac, so all I can imagine is that Ms. Franklin would look down and say, ‘That is how you show r-e-s-p-e-c-t to the Queen of Soul.”Nancy Pettaway broke into song while showing her Escalade to camera crews on Thursday, “we did that all the way here.”“Going back I think we’ll just turn the music off and reflect,” she said. “It helps you reflect on your own life and what kind of legacy you will leave for other people.”Pettaway drove from Killeen, Texas to Detroit. She said she’s always known that Franklin had an impact on her community, but since her passing she’s been able to learn even more about how she worked along Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and supported the Civil Rights movement.”That makes a big difference for all people,” Earl Harris said. “For all women. In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, the Trump administration on Thursday urged the Supreme Court to overturn the Affordable Care Act.The administration’s latest high court filing came the same day the government reported that close to half a million people who lost their health insurance amid the economic shutdown to slow the spread of COVID-19 have gotten coverage through HealthCare.gov.The administration’s legal brief makes no mention of the virus.Some 20 million Americans could lose their health coverage and protections for people with preexisting health conditions also would be put at risk if the court agrees with the administration in a case that won’t be heard before the fall.In the case before the Supreme Court, Texas and other conservative-led states argue that the ACA was essentially rendered unconstitutional after Congress passed tax legislation in 2017 that eliminated the law’s unpopular fines for not having health insurance, but left in place its requirement that virtually all Americans have coverage.After failing to repeal “Obamacare” in 2017 when Republicans fully controlled Congress, President Donald Trump has put the weight of his administration behind the legal challenge.If the health insurance requirement is invalidated, “then it necessarily follows that the rest of the ACA must also fall,” Solicitor General Noel Francisco wrote Thursday.The Trump administration’s views on what parts of the ACA might be kept or replaced if the law is overturned have shifted over time. INDIANAPOLIS -- Administrators at the Charles A. Tindley Accelerated School say an instructional assistant was fired Tuesday after she was found in possession of a handgun on campus.Police were called to the school at 3960 Meadows Drive around 9 a.m. Tuesday on a report of a staff member with a handgun.Officers arrived and took 31-year-old Dominique Squires into custody on preliminary charges of carrying a handgun without a license.According to school administrators, Squires was employed as an instructional assistant at the facility. Tindley administrators said all proper procedures were followed and no students were in danger at any point during the incident.Administrators also said Squires’ employment with Tindley was terminated immediately for violating school policy.As of Wednesday afternoon, Squires had been released without bond. The case was awaiting a formal charging decision by the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office.A call to Squires seeking comment Wednesday was not immediately returned.  1025

INDIANAPOLIS — A part-time trainer at Lutheran High School in Indianapolis says she was told she is no longer welcome there because she is gay.Krystal Brazel had worked at Lutheran High School as a game-only athletic trainer for the past five years. But in February, Brazel was told she would no longer be allowed to work, coach, or volunteer at the school because of her sexual orientation."I think they really decided to make an example of me," Brazel said. "It breaks my heart. I know what I poured into that school."When Brazel started as the athletic trainer at Lutheran High School she was diagnosing injuries on a folding table in the hallway. She started collecting donations because she said the student-athletes deserved more. Eventually, she helped create an athletic training room."I remember going to school thinking I don't ever want to be a high school athletic trainer. That's why I got my masters," Brazel said. "Life happened. And I started at Lutheran just helping out and I realized this is really God's calling for me is to have an impact on these people's lives and maybe be their first real gay Christian that they had an interaction with."In February, Brazel was called into a meeting with the athletic director and head of school and asked to read a handbook that she said stated homosexuality is a sin. She was then asked to sign saying she could follow it, which she couldn't.Brazel is engaged to be married on July 18 to her fiance, Samantha. She was ultimately told she could no longer coach the softball team she just helped lead to a state title in 2019.In June, Franciscan Health and Lutheran High School could not come to an agreement allowing her to continue as the athletic trainer either. Brazel is now sharing her story, pushing for change for the future."I still love them," Brazel said.
