SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – The owners of a Webster-area restaurant that has been broken into in recent days decided to set up their own overnight sting operation, and their plan led to two arrests.At around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, the owners of Trevi Ristorante on 4703 Federal Blvd., put together their own stakeout and waited for anyone who would try to break into the business.The restaurant had been burglarized three times in the past week, including one incident in which a safe was taken. Jonathan Romero, the owners’s son, told ABC 10News, “We’re tired of it.”While the owner remained on the roof, his son waited across the street and a family friend watched from behind the eatery.After several hours, they noticed an SUV park in an alley behind the restaurant and two men get out of the vehicle.As the family observed the two people go through gates to the restaurant’s back doors, the owner’s son called 911.San Diego police officers arrived at the scene and took one of the would-be burglars into custody.However, the other man climbed up the side of the building and ran across the roof. After jumping from the roof down to the front parking lot, the man ran away as officers pursued him.The man was able to cross Federal Boulevard, but officers deployed a stun gun and subdued him.The stunned man was treated at the scene for his injuries and is expected to be OK. 1373

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — There won't be a single Division 1 college football game played in San Diego this year, leaving local athletic directors searching for revenue streams.Another side effect of coronavirus-related restrictions have been cancellations across the U.S. for college athletics. The impact to some universities and college communities could total in the hundreds of millions of dollars."It can be anywhere from a million hit to a couple million dollar hit," says SDSU Athletic Director J.D. Wicker.And even if games can be played in California, restrictions on fans will leave a hole in revenue."We have tightened our belt. We've made across the board budget reductions," USD Athletic Director Bill McGillis said. "The amount of ticket-related revenue is going to be zero."McGillis adds that when the Pac-12 postponed basketball games in November and December, it cost the Toreros lucrative games at UCLA and Washington."That's a six-figure revenue loss," McGillis said.Meanwhile, Wicker is hoping to play enough football this spring to avoid losing money from a new TV deal that was supposed to kick in this fall. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Three rescued pilot whales have been transported to San Diego to continue their recovery from a mass stranding in 2012.SeaWorld San Diego welcomed 7-year-old short-finned pilot whales — Ace, Ava, and Piper — to the park Monday from SeaWorld's Orlando park. The three whales are the only surviving pilot whales from a mass stranding event near Fort Pierce, Fla., in 2012.The trio was rescued and rehabilitated by SeaWorld Orlando, but the National Marine Fisheries Service determined the three whales couldn't be returned to the wild since they were dependent calves at the time of their rescue.The whales will also join Argo, a pilot whale rescued after stranding on a beach near Kamogawa, Japan, in 2004. Argo was transported from Japan to San Diego in 2012.The new pilot whales are currently adjusting to their new habitat at the Dolphin Amphitheater and will be introduced to Argo over the next several days, SeaWorld says.As part of the transport, two of SeaWorld San Diego's beluga whales have been relocated to SeaWorld San Antonio. 1065

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Thousands of people enjoyed San Diego County beaches, despite the ongoing Beach Hazard Warnings.The National Weather Service announced there would be high surf, high tides, and strong rip currents on the San Diego County coastline. This Beach Hazard Warning continues until Sunday. Whether you're playing, laying, or even working on this July 4th holiday, spending time at Mission Beach was a dream come true. Especially if you were the Newman family, escaping the Phoenix heat. "When we left, I think it was 114 degrees," Bryant Newman said. They said it just doesn't compare. "We used to hang out a lot at the resorts there locally [in Phoenix], but we have been coming to California for Fourth of July for the last for five or six years," Newman said.But let's not forget about the Beach Hazard Warnings, still in effect until Sunday. "They did warn us about high surf before I left the hotel this morning," visitor from LA, Saira Kinuthia said. Kinuthia is not letting her two boys out of sight. She said while they are here for fun, safety comes first. "We had our talk, and if the lifeguard says that we need to come out of the water, then we have to come out of the water," Kinuthia said. Also keeping a close eye, there was a large police presence along the beaches and boardwalk. While most of the patrols were for alcohol, officers were also regulating the new e-scooter rules that took place on July 1st. Riders must slow down to 8 miles per hour on the boardwalk. But 10News saw many people zooming by. One was an accident between a double-rider and an elderly gentleman, walking on the boardwalk. All parties were okay. San Diego Police said they are giving many verbal warnings and a few citations for what they consider egregious e-scooter violations. Whether it's on the scooter or in the ocean, please remember.
