-- Cooper told the impeachment committees she came to had learned over the summer that US assistance to Ukraine was being held up for reasons that weren't entirely clear. In her role as deputy assistant secretary of defense for Russia, Ukraine and Eurasia, Cooper helped orchestrate US strategy for bolstering Ukraine's military, a bulwark against Russia. She played a coordinating role in managing the financial and military assistance Congress approved -- and participated in meetings when the aid was held. She testified that some fellow officials had raised questions about whether the hold was legal.A detail she revealed in her private interview undercut a key argument from the White House: that there could be no "quid pro quo" if the Ukrainians didn't know the aid was frozen. She says she had a "very strong inference" they did know.Hale, her partner in Wednesday's hearing, will offer more details about the ouster of Marie Yovanovitch, the onetime US ambassador to Ukraine. The number-three official at the State Department, he testified privately earlier this month that he had advocated for Yovanovitch as Giuliani was orchestrating a smear campaign against her. But ultimately he did not push for a public statement of support.A number of State Department officials have testified so far in the public hearings, but Hale is the most senior. A career foreign service officer, he told lawmakers during his earlier deposition that the judgment from senior State Department officials was that a statement supporting Yovanovitch would only worsen the situation."It would be better for everyone, including the ambassador, to try to just move past this," he said. 1670

With the revolving-door slate of deals making it tough to keep track of what's coming and going to Netflix each month, we're here to help you catch some movies and shows you may have had on your list before they leave the service and become a lot harder to find. After Aug. 1, you'll need a time machine to check out the "Back to the Future" trilogy on Netflix, because they are vanishing like Marty McFly's family does in his photo. There are several other beloved movies leaving, including the coming-of-age dramedy "Can't Hardly Wait," the sci-fi classic "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial" and the seminal romantic comedy "Hitch."Here are the shows and films leaving Netflix in August, courtesy of What's on Netflix:August 1Back to the FutureBack to the Future Part IIBack to the Future Part IIIBlack Heart (Season 1)Can’t Hardly WaitCare Bears: Welcome to Care-a-Lot (Season 1)CasperCharlie and the Chocolate FactoryChernobyl DiariesComedy Bang! after the Trump administration imposed tariffs on Chinese goods. For Mark Ulness and his family from Manitowoc County, Wisconsin, it's the one time of year their hard work in the barn gets recognized by the masses. Some dairy farmers said being at the Wisconsin State Fair is a getaway from the everyday issues their industry is facing."We make sure (the cows are) fed before we eat a lot of times," Ulness said.As a fifth-generation dairy farmer, Ulness has seen the ups and downs of the industry, but nothing quite like the challenges of the last five years."As a family farmer, it's tough to see friends and neighbors go out, but we understand the struggles that they're going through," he said.Ulness said those struggles started when dairy prices plummeted in 2014 due to a milk surplus. Tariff implications over the last few years have only made the industry's outlook grimmer.According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Wisconsin lost 700 dairy farmers last year. It is the topic at the center of many political debates."Some of the farmers are really doing well," President Donald Trump told a crowd in Milwaukee a few weeks ago. "We're over the hump, we're doing really well, and in the meantime our government has billions of dollars pouring in and that money is paid for by China.""The farm foreclosure capital of the United States is, unfortunately, America's dairyland, Wisconsin," said Democratic National Committee Chair Tom Perez.Heather Larson of Darlington, Wisconsin knows of fellow dairy farmers dealing with more than money issues."He had two friends already this year commit suicide because of dairy farming," Larson said.Ulness is thankful his farm is still afloat, but it's come with sacrifices."My wife has a job off the farm, and a lot of times she'd prefer just to be at the farm working," he said. This story was originally published by Ben Jordan on 1883
