Tropical Storm Josephine became the 10th named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season Thursday, marking the earliest “J” storm to ever form in the basin. While Josephine is not a particularly noteworthy story due to its strength and location, the storm indicates that the 2020 hurricane season could go down as a record-breaking one. Analysis released by Colorado State University last week forecasts 24 named tropical systems in 2020, which would make it the second-most active season in history. If there are 24 named systems in 2020, it would become just the second time the National Hurricane Center would exhaust its name list. In that case, the National Hurricane Center would use the Greek alphabet for any remaining storms at the end of the season.Josephine does not pose an immediate threat to land, as of Thursday evening. The storm packs top winds of 45 MPH, and is in the open Atlantic well east of the Caribbean Islands. The National Hurricane Center projects it to turn to the north and begin to dissipate before heading in the direction of Bermuda. 1069
Vice President Mike Pence is heading to Louisiana just as the state is re-emerging as a national hot spots for the coronavirus. He's scheduled to meet Tuesday with Gov. John Bel Edwards, members of the congressional delegation and state health officials to talk about Louisiana’s response to the pandemic. One person he won't see is Attorney General Jeff Landry, who tested positive ahead of the Pence visit and is in quarantine. Louisiana's confirmed caseload is growing fast, and its infection and hospitalization rates are surging. Edwards enacted a statewide mask mandate for people 8 and older that took effect Monday and bars are back to take-out and delivery only. 679

VENTURA, Calif. (AP) — A study shows California’s stay-at-home order in response to the coronavirus outbreak seems to have saved some wildlife, as decreased traffic resulted in fewer collisions with mountain lions, deer and other large animals. The Ventura County Star reports a study by the Road Ecology Center at the University of California, Davis found traffic declined by about 75% after the emergency order went into effect in March. The number of animals struck and killed by vehicles also fell, including a 58% decrease in fatal crashes involving mountain lions between the 10 weeks before and 10 weeks after the order. 635
