As Fire Chief John Alston Jr. spoke to reporters in New Haven, Connecticut, about a spate of drug overdoses on Wednesday, he heard shouting coming from behind him."We're getting another call of a person," Alston said.He quickly helped coordinate the response, and then returned to the microphone.That scene occurred the same day that 76 people were believed to have overdosed on some form of K2, or synthetic marijuana, officials in New Haven said. Officials responded to 19 additional reports of overdoses on Thursday, bringing the total to 95 cases, according to Rick Fontana, New Haven Emergency Operations Director.Almost all of the overdoses occurred in New Haven Green, a large park in the city's downtown.On Wednesday, 72 people were transported to the hospital and four people refused treatment, according to Fontana.There have been no deaths from the spate of overdoses. Anita Hall, along with the Hollywood Commission, will launch a new anonymous reporting platform next year to hold serial harassers in the movie industry accountable.Hill, who made history in October 1991 when she testified before Congress about the alleged sexual harassment she experienced when she was an aide by then-Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas at the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.Twenty-nine years later, Hill is still finding ways to address the abuse and harassment women still face today.The Hollywood Commission, founded by entertainment lawyer Nina Shaw and Lucasfilm's Kathleen Kennedy and Hill chairs, recently spearheaded a survey that found survivors want to track harassment and abuse in the workplace.According to the survey, 93% of the 9,630 anonymous current and former workers in Hollywood said they wanted "technology for victims to create a time-stamped record" that would track harassment and abuse in the workplace.After its findings, the commission announced in September that by the first quarter of 2021, they would launch a cross-industry anonymous reporting platform that would help identify abusers.The platform would also allow users to ask questions or raise concerns through a two-way anonymous messaging system."For too long in Hollywood, there have been 'open secrets' about the harassment perpetrated on workers by powerful people who are able to successfully evade accountability for their actions," said Hill in the press release. "With this survey, we have identified the most vulnerable workers in Hollywood and the resources and systems that will provide support and a safety net for them. Our expectation is that these tools will be the foundation to build a new era of transparency and accountability for all workers in the entertainment industry."According to the press release, the commission will also train 450 entertainment workers through a bystander intervention training program to teach them how to intervene if they see abuse happening. 2016

Another Confederate statue came down on the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill campus this week.A crowd of nearly 250 protestors took down the statue known as Silent Sam on the eve of the new school year.According to a school website, the statue was built in 1913 and was put up to commemorate Confederate soldiers from the university, "who died for their beloved Southland" during the Civil War.The removal of the statue comes months after students and some faculty began calling for it to be taken down.As that played out in North Carolina, another monumental change occurred in Oklahoma, as the Tulsa Public Schools, after weeks of debate, voted to rename Robert E. Lee Elementary School.In the past three years, over 100 Confederate monuments have been removed. However, far more remain, and are still being cataloged.  They’re also not just in the south.According to a recent report by the Southern Poverty Law Center, more than 1,700 monuments and namesakes, commemorating the Confederacy remain."The SPLC, of course, does not support destruction of memorials,” says Lecia Brooks, with the SPLC. “We just believe they should be removed from public space to a place where they can be taught about in context-- to a museum, to an archive.”Brooks says the two events this week, both occurring at the very start of the school year, sends a message that the debate is far from over."College admins do themselves a disservice and underplay the students if they think that they’re just going to simply forget about these things at the end of the school year and come back and start a school year anew with the same monuments existing,” Brooks says. “I think it’s wonderful.
