DENVER (KMGH) -- You could call it the very definition of the old expression of being in "the right place at the right time" when several emergency room doctors saved a man's life at a Denver sandwich shop.The doctors happened to be in town for a conference of ER doctors. They were on a lunch break Monday afternoon at Snarf's on Champa when the man walked in and collapsed."He went into cardiac arrest. His heart stopped beating, stopped pumping blood," said Dr. David Levy. Levy was alongside several of his former residents and a pair of emergency physicians from New Jersey, who all jumped into action."We did chest compressions. We shocked him with the [defibrillator]," he explained.The man was without a pulse three separate times, but the team was able to revive it in time for medics to arrive and transport him to the hospital."Everyone expects this to happen in a hospital in a controlled environment, but when you’re there, and it happens on the floor of a restaurant it takes you by surprise," Levy said. "He would have died if no one was there to intervene."As of Monday night, the man had survived the ordeal and was being treated in the intensive care unit.And what did this group of hero doctors do next?"We washed our hands, sat down, and finished our lunch," Levy said.Levy would go on to win three separate awards that night as part of the convention, the American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians. 1478

(KGTV) - The COVID-19 pandemic-related shutdowns are impacting cities across San Diego, and the seaside village of Del Mar is no different.Alex and William Rhett opened a childrens' book store in Del Mar a year ago."The pandemic killed us as a business, but the community brought us back, and here we are," said Alex.The couple just opened Sandcastle Tales at its new location in the Del Mar Plaza."We feel overwhelmed, excited, happy what else very, very thankful," said Alex.The bookstore and the just-opened School of Rock are part of an effort to attract younger crowds to the plaza, located at 1555 Camino Del Mar"You just can't apply the same old formula that you had before, so you have to get a new mix of tenants, a new synergistic group of people that bring a variety of age groups to the plaza," said Patty Brutten.Patty and Marc Brutten spent roughly forty-million dollars buying the plaza in 2017."The successes have been very few and far between. It's been a long hard road," said Patty.Competition from One Paseo, Flower Hill Promenade, and online retail has made it tough to attract new tenants."I don't think anyone else would have stuck with it like we do just because we live here, we're community members," said Patty.Since the pandemic hit, some businesses have closed their doors. Lorna Jane, an athletic apparel recently closed. Prep Kitchen is closed just up the street, and a newly opened barbershop is no longer operating. But two new restaurants are moving into the plaza. Outdoor concerts on the deck continue to be popular. "We really hope everyone can really rediscover the plaza," said Patty.City leaders say retail and restaurants are struggling, but the most significant hit came when the San Diego County Fair was canceled, and the horse races went on without spectators. "Biggest loss is sales tax from the fairgrounds, and that's close to a million dollars," said Del Mar City Councilman Dave Druker. The city has benefited though from an increase in people at the beach."The beaches have been extremely busy. Instead of 10,000 we're getting closer to 40,000 on a weekend," said Druker.Back at Sandcastle Tales, the owners are grateful for another chance."I feel like one of the best opportunities I have ever had, and we want to give back," said Rhett. DENVER, Colorado — Authorities say one person is dead and four others have been wounded in a shooting in broad daylight in downtown Denver.It happened around 4 p.m. local time Monday near the busy intersection of 21st and Lawrence streets. A suspect or suspects remain at large. Police say the four wounded in the shooting were transported to Denver Health in stable condition. The fatal victim, whose identity has not been released, was pronounced at the scene. DENVER, Colo. – A grand jury has indicted a former Idaho gubernatorial candidate on murder and kidnapping charges in connection with the 1984 death and disappearance of 12-year-old Jonelle Matthews in Greeley, Colorado.Steven Dana Pankey, 69, has been indicted on counts of first-degree murder after deliberation, felony murder, and second-degree kidnapping with a weapon. He also faces two sentence enhancers for using a weapon in commission of a violent crime if he is convicted, according to court records and the indictment, which was obtained by KMGH.Matthews’ remains were discovered at an oil and gas site in Greeley in July 2019. DETROIT (AP) — Korean automakers Hyundai and Kia are recalling over 591,000 vehicles in the U.S. to fix a brake fluid leak that could cause engine fires. The recalls cover more than 440,000 Kia Optima midsize sedans from 2013 through 2015 and Kia Sorento SUVs from 2014 and 2015. Also covered are 151,000 Hyundai Santa Fe SUVs from 2013 to 2015. The affiliated automakers say brake fluid can leak inside a hydraulic control unit for the anti-lock brakes, possibly causing an electrical short that can lead to fires. Kia’s recall will start Oct. 15, while Hyundai’s will start Oct. 23. Dealers for both companies will inspect the control units for leaks and replace them if needed at no cost to owners. 709
