FALLBROOK (CNS) - Authorities Saturday were continuing to seek a driver who was involved in a crash with another car in Fallbrook early Friday then fled, was pursued by the other car's driver and escaped when the other driver was involved in a second crash.Officers said the driver of the Mustang was in critical condition at a hospital as a result of the crash.The dangerous chain of events began shortly before 9:40 a.m. when a brown SUV, possibly a GMC Envoy, and a Ford Mustang collided on southbound South Mission Road at Stage Coach Lane, just west of Fallbrook High School, according to information from CHP Officer Mark Latulippe.The "involved vehicles began to chase each other," Latulippe said, and the two cars initially headed south, but later turned around and continued north on South Mission Road.As the cars approached the intersection with Stage Coach Lane -- the same area where the first collision occurred -- a Honda CRV was also nearing the signal, heading west on Stage Coach.The SUV made it through the intersection, but the Mustang was struck by the CRV, which was heading into the intersection with a green light, Latulippe said.Another two cars, a Toyota Tundra and a Volvo V60, were also struck by the Mustang after the impact with the CRV.The driver of the Mustang, a 19-year-old Fallbrook man, suffered "major injuries" and was taken to Palomar Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition Friday night, Latulippe said.A female passenger in the Mustang, also 19, was being treated at Sharp Memorial Hospital for injuries described as minor.Drivers and passengers in the other cars involved in the second crash had complaints of pain, but no other injuries, according to Latulippe.It is believed the car involved in the initial crash is possibly an early 2000s GMC Envoy driven my a man. Its driver continued north on South Mission Road after the collision, and was last seen near Rocky Crest Road.The intersection of South Mission Road and Stage Coach Lane was closed for about an hour-and-a-half on Friday while officers investigated. 2085

(KGTV) - The Escondido Union High School District is celebrating a grant renewal of over million to go towards helping students.The ASSETs grant comes from the federal government and helps funds after-school programs and other support services for students and parents.The district has received this funding for the past 10 years and schools have put it to good use.San Pasqual High School has created unique clubs like ukulele, welding, robotics, and mountain biking. The money also funds academic tutoring as well as programs like Drivers Ed.Everything created through the ASSETs grant money is free for students. "I can tell you it has literally transformed the experience for hundreds of students, hundreds," said San Pasqual High School Principal Martin Casas.Up until last week, next year's grant money wasn't a sure thing. Casas says the district worried the money would be cut from the federal budget.ASSETs grant schools like San Pasqual were trying to figure out which programs they'd have to cut if the funding didn't come through. Casas estimates they would have had to cut half of their programs.But now that the funding is secured, schools can look forward to creating even more programs.They'll receive 0,000 each year for the next five years.Some new programs in the works include building skateboards, music production, and mariachi.In addition to San Pasqual High, Orange Glen, Escondido and Valley High Schools will be getting ASSETs funding.The district says over 75 percent of its students qualify for free and reduced lunch, so these programs are vital.  1618

"Can't stop thinking about him and about that day," said Marc Engelhardt.Engelhardt calls the last week all-consuming and painful, since the moment he doubled back during a six-hour bike ride to see what was keeping his friends - only to discover the horrific aftermath. His friend Kevin Lentz, 36, a husband and new father, was struck and killed on an Escondido street, hit head-on by a dark sedan which promptly took off."Disbelief, surreal," said Engelhardt.RELATED: Friends mourn bicyclist killed in hit-and-run crashPolice say they discovered the heavily damaged car about a half mile away. ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) - The oldest tree at North County’s San Diego Botanic Garden is finding new life as a work of art.The Eucalyptus cladocalyx was planted 100 years ago at the Encinitas garden. It had to be euthanized last year because it was leaning and posing a threat to visitors, officials said.Artist Erwin Young “Mitch” Mitchell IV took the 30-foot stump and transformed it into a replica of a baobab tree. He expects to be finished this week."The Garden is a wonderful place, not only to visit, but to create such a great endeavor there is fantastic - I appreciate the opportunity," said Mitchell. "It is the first time I have ever changed a tree into another tree. ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) -- A surfer died after being rescued from Swami's Beach Monday morning, Encinitas city officials confirm. Lifeguards and the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department responded to a reported ocean rescue in the surf line at Swami's Beach just after 11 a.m. Monday. After arriving, crews found a man submerged with his surfboard attached and floating on the surface of the water while bystanders tried to rescue the surfer. The man was taken to shore where crews performed CPR. He was then taken to the hospital in critical condition where he later died.
