SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — While San Diego's Big Bay Boom and other popular fireworks shows are canceled this year, there are a handful of drive-in style events happening this weekend.In Vista, Poway, El Cajon, and Santee, fireworks displays are being hosted with social distancing in mind. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- America’s Freedom Bell, which has been traveling across the country for years, officially has a permanent home in San Diego.Wednesday, the bell was unveiled at its new home at the Veterans Museum in Balboa Park. Before that, it was kept in a storage facility in between travels.Richard Rovsek, a Rancho Santa Fe resident and founder of the Spirit of Liberty Foundation, drew up a design for the bell on a napkin during a meal. 72 hours later he learned it would become a reality.Rovsek created the bell to give Americans a chance to ring it and honor the men and women who served our nation. Five million Americans have rung the bell so far.“It’s closure for families,” said Rovesek.The bell was cast on June 6, 2013 with full military honors on the 69th anniversary of D-Day. It has traveled to Independence Hall, Arlington Cemetery, Pearl Harbor, Normandy Beach and more. It will continue to travel occasionally, but will forever call San Diego home. On the bell are the timeless words “Honor Our Armed Forces Past, Present and Future.” It includes emblems for every branch of the military and contains 11 pounds of steel from the World Trade Center.Wednesday, the Spirit of Liberty Foundation and The Veterans Museum at Balboa Park also announced the creation of “America’s Patriotic Honor Roll” which will include the names of more than 100 million veterans who have served since 1776. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- A new effort is underway to revive a San Diego public golf course that's falling apart.  The "Friends of Presidio Hills Golf" went before the city council Tuesday urging them to take up the issue.  Their plan is to restore the course to its former glory days.Presidio Hills in Old Town is a local golf course with a storied past and an uncertain future."It needs to be completely redone," said John Vallas, who spearheaded the proposal.The place many once called the "cradle of golf" in San Diego is now a long shot from being up to par. 578

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- A trip to a dog park in Ocean Beach ended in a hospital visit for one San Diego couple.“I want her to go to jail, she assaulted my husband, and I’m angry about it,” said Ash O’Brien.O'Brien said she and her husband were at Dusty Rhodes Dog Park in Ocean Beach Thursday afternoon with their three-month-old puppy. They sat at a picnic table and began enjoying a meal when a woman reportedly confronted them for not wearing facial coverings and eating at the park where there is a no food policy.The confrontation ended with O’Brien’s husband being pepper-sprayed by the woman.“If we knew there was a no food policy, we wouldn’t have brought it into the park,” said O’Brien. “The lady who maced him automatically started saying stuff about us not wearing a mask when we were social distancing; there was no one near us.”O’Brien said that after exchanging words, the woman walked away from the picnic table but returned after a few minutes and did the unexpected.“She just came up without saying anything and just stuck the mace can right in front of my face,” said O’Brien.“My husband, being a good guy, walked in front of her and was like ‘hey calm down please don’t do this’ and then she grabbed him and just starting macing him, she used the entire can on him.”“We drove to the hospital, he got treated and everything,” said O’Brien.O’Brien said the pepper spray got on her arms and started to burn, while her husband was sprayed in the face.A witness captured part of the incident on camera and told ABC 10News she was shocked at what she was seeing. She recorded the woman’s license plate number.The couple filed a police report with the San Diego Police Department. The department confirmed they took a misdemeanor battery report but could not immediately provide further details.O’Brien was thankful none of the dogs at the park were injured by the pepper spray and wants the woman to be held accountable for the incident.“People don’t need to be getting assaulted for not wearing a mask in a public outdoor area,” she said. 2055

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — WWE Wrestler John Cena paid his friend and rookie Padres pitcher, Logan Allen one dollar, after losing a bet he made a year and a half ago. The signed dollar was handed to Allen at the Ceremonial First Pitch, a day after the 22-year-old made his Major League debut at Petco Park. Allen's debut performance on the Major League mound Tuesday was nothing short of stellar. Off the mound, he also hit a single to right field, helping his own cause in a 4-1 victory for the Padres. This his was the game that changed Logan Allen's life forever, and earned him a dollar from John Cena. It all started in January 2018, when the then-Minor Leaguer had a chance encounter with Cena at a Tampa Steak House. The two clicked and made a bet. "How can I create a situation, not to have Logan fail? But to face him with the concept of failure? I bet him a dollar that he would not make it into the Major Leagues," Cena said to the Padres.
