BEIJING, April 7 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government encourages Chinese businesses to set up economic and trade cooperation zones in member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to deepen cooperation, a senior commerce official said Wednesday.Vice Minister of Commerce Gao Hucheng, speaking at a preparatory meeting for the seventh China-ASEAN Expo, said China and ASEAN members have strengthened economic and trade cooperation since the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area (CAFTA) came into effect on Jan. 1 this year.Customs data showed that bilateral trade totalled 39.12 billion U.S. dollars in the first two months of 2009, up 66 percent from a year ago.Chinese exports to ASEAN states rose 52.9 percent to 18.69 billion U.S. dollars while imports from ASEAN jumped 80.2 percent to 20.43 billion U.S. dollars.Gao called upon "eligible" Chinese enterprises to "go overseas" to ASEAN countries to set up economic and trade zones with infrastructure and industrial chains.He also said the two sides should implement the agreement on trade and expand trade, calling for an increase in the trade of high value-added products, including mechanical and electrical products and other hi-tech products.The two sides' enterprises should further expand cooperation and deepening ties in the agricultural, manufacturing, infrastructure, resources, and processing sectors, he said.The CAFTA, covering a population of about 1.9 billion, is the world's third largest trade agreement in terms of trade volume, after the European Union and the North American Free Trade Area.The ASEAN groups Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.Under the CAFTA, the average tariff on goods from ASEAN countries entering China has been cut to 0.1 percent from 9.8 percent, while the six original ASEAN members - Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand - slashed the average tariff on Chinese goods entering ASEAN states from 12.8 percent to 0.6 percent.The seventh China-ASEAN Expo will be held in Nanning, capital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, from Oct. 20 to 24 this year.

The two sides have defined their relationship as positive, cooperative, comprehensive and 21st-century-oriented.The military relationship was also an agenda in Monday's talks, despite their bilateral military exchanges being suspended since the U.S. arms sales to Taiwan earlier this year."In the meeting, delegates from the Chinese Liberation Army said the Chinese side always attaches importance to mutual trust and cooperation with the U.S. side. BEIJING, April 1 (Xinhua) -- China's average daily stock trading volume at the Shanghai Stock Exchange shrank 35.2 percent month on month to 96.85 billion yuan (14.2 billion U.S. dollars) in February, the People's Bank of China (PBOC) said Thursday.China's stock market was closed from Feb. 13 to 19, for the Spring Festival, the most important Chinese traditional holiday.Analysts held that trading was normally bleak in the Spring Festival month, as some investors preferred to cash in profits before going back to hometowns for family gatherings and some were cautious before the release of new economic data after the holiday.The Spring Festival fell in January last year. The daily average stock turnover was down 3.38 billion yuan to 65.4 billion yuan in January 2009 compared with December 2008, according to the PBOC.The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index edged up 110.58 points from Feb. 1 to 3,051.94 points on Feb. 26 this year, the last trading day in the month, the central bank said in a financial market report released Thursday on its official website.China's financial market kept its smooth run in January and February, said the PBOC.The Shanghai Composite Index gained 1.23 percent, or 38.32 points, to end at 3,147.42 points Thursday. BRISBANE, Australia, April 4 (Xinhua) -- All the crew members are safe after a Chinese coal ship ran aground off the eastern coast of Australia on Saturday, said Chinese Consul-general in Brisbane Ren Gongping on Sunday.Ren told Xinhua that the 230-meter-long bulk coal carrier Shen Neng 1 ran aground about 70 km east of Great Keppel Island in Queensland State shortly after 5 p.m. on Saturday.The vessel, carrying 950 tons of heavy fuel oil and 65,000 tons of coal, is bound for China.Ren said he had phoned the captain of the carrier, Wang Jichang, who told Ren that drinking water and food are enough for the 23 crew members. The incident caused no injuries to the crew.The consul-general said the captain told him the incident is not serious and repair is underway.Ren added that he was very much concerned about the safety of the Chinese crew and he had contacted the local police immediately after learning the incident. The police had assured Ren that they would try their best to safeguard the crew in case of an emergency.Three police ships have reached the area and are ready to take the crew to safe place from the coal carrier.
